IIT MA Through GATE Sociology: IIT Madras and IIT Delhi Cut-offs, Seats

A GATE Sociology score has one clear use: admission to an M.A. at an IIT. We found no job route that uses it, and no central university we checked admits to its Sociology M.A. on it. Within the IITs, three programmes matter. IIT Madras’s two-year M.A. in Development Studies reserves 15 of its 25 seats for XH-C6 candidates and admits strictly on GATE score. IIT Delhi’s M.A. in Culture, Society and Thought takes 10 of its 25 students through a GATE score in any XH subject, followed by an interview. IIT Gandhinagar has announced that its M.A. in Society and Culture will admit on GATE scores. This guide sets out the seats, the published closing scores for IIT Madras in every category, what they mean in marks, the fees and the programmes that are not GATE routes, despite what some pages say.

IIT Madras’s M.A. has four streams (English Studies, Development Studies, Economics and Public Policy), each with 25 seats for Indian students. Each stream accepts particular XH sections. For a Sociology (XH-C6) candidate the brochure’s seat table opens two doors: Development Studies, where Sociology has the largest share, and Public Policy, which is open to every XH section.

All M.A. seats are “Non-HTTA”: they carry no Half-Time Teaching Assistantship, so there is no monthly stipend. Admission is strictly in order of merit by GATE score; there is no interview. The brochure’s codes use an “N” suffix for Non-HTTA, which is why the cut-off PDFs list the stream as HS2N.

Three patterns are worth knowing. First, 2025 was an outlier: the GEN closing score jumped to 679 and OBC-NCL to 571, then fell back in 2026. In GATE 2025 the 40-mark cap held the Sociology qualifying mark at 40 (μ+σ was 55.72), which lifted scores below the top candidates’ mean; IIT Madras does not publish which GATE year its admitted candidates’ scores came from. Second, the Public Policy cut-off (618 GEN in 2026) is higher than Development Studies (528). It draws on candidates from all six XH sections, including Economics and Psychology, which is our likely explanation; IIT Madras gives none. Third, the reserved-category cut-offs are well below GEN. SC closed at 184 and ST at 286 in 2026, and in 2024 the OBC-NCL closing score (221) was below the EWS one (341).

Converting a closing score into GATE marks shows the real target. The conversion assumes the score came from the same year’s GATE Sociology paper. A GATE score is valid for three years, so some admitted candidates will have held older scores, and the Public Policy cut-off may have been set by a candidate from another XH section.

So a general-category candidate who wants a realistic chance at Development Studies should aim for a score of about 600, which is roughly 53 marks on a 2026-type paper and comfortably above both the 2024 and 2026 closing scores. Only the 2025 cut-off was higher. The GATE rank is among Sociology candidates only: 1,819 appeared in 2026, and a score of 528 meant a rank somewhere between 107 and 195.

IIT Delhi’s M.A. in Culture, Society and Thought (CST) is run by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. Its 2026 admissions notice sets out two entrance pathways: a GATE score in any XH subject, and the department’s own entrance examination, held on campus on 17 May 2026. Candidates shortlisted on GATE go straight to the online interview; the others must pass the entrance examination first. Of the 25 students admitted, 10 come through GATE and 15 through the entrance examination. The 2026 provisional shortlist (7 May 2026) set the GATE threshold for the interview at a score of 550 or more in any XH subject (300 for SC/ST/PwD); on the 2026 Sociology field 550 is about 50.5 marks (our arithmetic). That is a shortlisting threshold, not a closing score: IIT Delhi publishes no admitted-candidate cut-off.

IIT Gandhinagar’s M.A. in Society and Culture page carries a notice that admission “starting from 2026 will happen through valid GATE scores”, and asks aspirants to write GATE. The same page still says admission is “based on entrance test and interview”, and it does not name a GATE paper or section. We print both statements because the page does; ask the institute which applies before relying on either. Its 2026 window ran from 18 March to 13 May, with an application fee of ₹300 (₹150 for SC/ST/PwD).

Set the fees against the missing stipend. Neither IIT Madras nor IIT Delhi pays M.A. students a monthly stipend, so budget for living costs from your own funds or a scholarship.

IIT Madras applications are made on its M.Tech./M.Sc./M.A. admission portal, usually in spring after the GATE result on 19 March 2027; the 2027 dates are not yet out. Apply to both Development Studies and Public Policy if you are eligible, since each is filled from a separate merit list. A score from GATE 2025 or 2026 may still be valid, so check each 2027 brochure for which GATE years it accepts and use your best valid score.
