GATE Sociology 2027 (XH6) Preparation Plan: October to February

GATE 2027 runs over six days, 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. The XH paper’s day is not yet published; in 2026 it was on Saturday 7 February, in the afternoon session. That leaves about four and a half months from the end of September. Registration comes first: the GATE 2027 important-dates page, checked on 28 September, shows the regular window open until 5 October 2026 and the late-fee window until 12 October. The brochure revised on 27 September prints the same dates (its 17 September version had 27 September and 5 October). This plan splits the months into four phases and your hours across the paper in proportion to the marks each part has actually carried.

Two facts shape the plan. First, 40 of the 100 marks are not Sociology at all: Reasoning and Comprehension (XH0, 25) and General Aptitude (15). They are shared with every other Humanities candidate and are the cheapest marks on the paper to secure. Second, within the 60 Sociology marks, three sections dominate. By our count of 2023–2026, Sociological Theory averaged 15.25, Indian Society 11.0 and Sociological Concepts 10.25. Research Methodology (8.75), Development (4.75), Family (4.0), Social Movements (3.0) and Agrarian Sociology (2.0) share the rest, and one mark or so a year goes to questions that mix sections.

Sociological Theory first. Durkheim, Weber and Marx were asked in every paper from 2023 to 2026, often two or three times, so read their core texts and concepts carefully: social facts, solidarity, suicide and religion; authority, social action, the Protestant ethic, bureaucracy and ideal types; class, alienation, surplus value and historical materialism. Then the structural-functional tradition (Malinowski, Radcliffe-Brown, Parsons, Merton, Levi-Strauss) and the interpretative one (Mead, Schutz, Garfinkel, Goffman, Geertz). Spend 20–30 minutes a day on reasoning puzzles from the start rather than leaving XH0 to the end.

Indian Society went 8, 8, 12 and then 16 marks in 2026, so give it a full month with Sociological Concepts. Cover the perspectives the syllabus names by author: Ghurye, Srinivas, Desai, Guha’s subaltern studies, Phule and Ambedkar, Leela Dube and Sharmila Rege, Yogendra Singh and Dipankar Gupta on tradition and modernity, Beteille, Desai and Dhanagare on agrarian society, and now T. K. Oommen on social movements. Caste questions built on Srinivas appeared eight or more times in four papers. In Concepts, work through structure, status and role, identity, habitus and agency, stratification and intersectionality, and social mobility, adding Westernization next to Sanskritization.

Now Research Methodology, including what 2027 added or moved: Popper and Kuhn by name, etic and emic approaches, statistical methods, and inductive and deductive methods (moved up from research design). Revise basic statistics (averages, dispersion, correlation, levels of measurement) and sampling types, which have produced ten questions between them in four papers. Then the new theory names, Coser and Althusser, and the Indian thinkers Desai and Beteille. Close the month with the four smaller sections: Family, Marriage and Kinship; Social Movements; Agrarian Sociology; and Sociology of Development in its 2027 form, which means modernization and dependency theory, post-development (Escobar), feminist critique, human development and development-induced dispossession, but no longer sustainable development.

Write the five official papers (2022–2026) under exam conditions, one or two a week, and mark each against the final key. Our previous-papers guide lists the files. After each paper, sort every mistake by syllabus section and go back to that section the next day. Keep a list of every thinker you did not recognise: the papers regularly name people outside the syllabus list (Hochschild, Turner, Homans and Sahlins among them), and a one-line note on each is cheap insurance. Keep the last week for revision and sleep, not new topics.

A plan made of months only works if each week has the same shape. At 20 hours a week, which is what the planner above assumes by default, a workable pattern is five study days of about three hours and one longer day of five. Spend the weekday blocks on reading for the current phase’s sections, with 20–30 minutes of reasoning puzzles or General Aptitude at the start of each session, while you are fresh. Use the long day for practice: a timed set of past questions on the week’s topics, then a slow review of every mistake. Keep a single notebook of errors sorted by syllabus section and reread it every Sunday. By January that notebook, not a second pass through a textbook, is your revision material.

Four habits cost marks on this paper, and all four are avoidable. The first is leaving the compulsory parts to the end: 40 marks shared with every Humanities candidate cannot be crammed in the last fortnight. The second is guessing on MCQs. Only MCQs carry negative marks, so skip a two-mark MCQ you cannot narrow to two options. The third is over-ticking MSQs. An MSQ scores only if you mark exactly the right set, and eleven Sociology MSQs in four years had a single correct option. The fourth is revising from 2026-syllabus material without checking it. Sustainable development and the State and Market block are gone; C. Wright Mills has been replaced by Coser and Althusser.

Reasoning and Comprehension is misnamed. By our count of the 2023–2026 papers, analytical reasoning (puzzles, arrangements, numerical reasoning) carried an average of 14.75 of its 25 marks, expression 4.5, logical reasoning 3.0 and reading comprehension only 2.75; we classified none of the 2026 marks as reading comprehension, though passages still appear as the basis for other question types. The question types shift too: 14 of its 25 marks were MSQ in 2026, against 2 in 2025, and it has had NAT questions in three of the four years, which Sociology itself never sets.
