GATE Sociology 2027 Syllabus (XH-C6 → XH6): Every Change, Line by Line

IIT Madras renamed XH-C6 to XH6 and rewrote five of the eight Sociology sections. Every line added and dropped, what the 2023–2026 papers asked on it, and what to revise now.

GATE Sociology 2027 Syllabus (XH-C6 → XH6): Every Change, Line by Line

Checked 28 September 2026. From the GATE 2027 XH6 syllabus as reproduced in the official GATE 2027 brochure (IIT Madras), the GATE 2026 XH-C6 syllabus (IIT Guwahati) and the official papers and keys 2023–2026. The line-by-line comparison and the question mapping are ours. Re-check against the standalone XH6 PDF if IIT Madras revises it.

For GATE 2027 the Sociology section has a new code and a revised syllabus. IIT Madras has renamed the Humanities sections: XH-C6 Sociology becomes XH6, and the compulsory Reasoning and Comprehension part, XH-B1, becomes XH0. The eight Sociology sections keep their titles and their order, from 6.1 Sociological Theory to 6.8 Sociology of Development. But five of the eight have changed wording: 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.6 and 6.8. Some changes are small, a name added to a list. Others remove whole blocks that students have been revising for years, including sustainable development and the State and Market block with “Globalisation and Liberalization”. This guide sets out every change against the 2026 text, then checks which of the added and dropped lines the last four papers actually asked.

Where other pages get this wrong

The GATE 2027 Sociology paper is XH6 (39 questions, 60 marks) plus the compulsory XH0 (16 questions, 25 marks) and General Aptitude (10 questions, 15 marks). The organising institute is IIT Madras and the official site is gate2027.iitm.ac.in.

Commonly published instead: Diwakar Education Hub’s “GATE Sociology exam” page (checked 28 Sep 2026) calls the paper “XH-C5 (Sociology)”, which is the Psychology code, splits the questions as 15 General Aptitude, 10 XH-B1 and 40 Sociology, and gives the official website as gate.iisc.ac.in.

The paper in 2027: new codes, same marks

The Humanities paper has three parts. General Aptitude and Reasoning and Comprehension are common to every Humanities candidate. The optional section, which for you is Sociology, is ranked separately: the brochure gives a separate score and rank for each section, so a GATE Sociology rank is a rank among Sociology candidates only. Marks and question counts are unchanged between 2026 and 2027; the codes and the syllabus wording changed.

GATE 2027 Information Brochure. The other five optional sections become XH1 Economics, XH2 English, XH3 Linguistics, XH4 Philosophy and XH5 Psychology.

Only multiple-choice questions (MCQs) carry negative marks: −1/3 on a one-mark and −2/3 on a two-mark question. Multiple-select questions (MSQs) and numerical-answer questions (NATs) carry none. Sociology has set no NAT questions at all in 2022–2026, so in practice the section is MCQ and MSQ only. If you want to write a second paper, XH can be paired only with ST (Statistics), and you cannot write two XH sections.

Every change, section by section

We compared the 2026 XH-C6 PDF (IIT Guwahati) with the 2027 XH6 text phrase by phrase, using the brochure’s reproduction on pages 132–133 and the standalone 2027 XH6 PDF, which carry the same text. Sections 6.4 (Agrarian Sociology), 6.5 (Family, Marriage and Kinship) and 6.7 (Social Movements) are word for word the same apart from the new “XH6.n” labels.

Section2026 (XH-C6)2027 (XH6)Change
6.1 Theory: fourth heading“Post-Modernism, Post-Structuralism and Post-Colonialism”“Recent theoretical developments, Post-Modernism and Post-Structuralism”Post-Colonialism dropped from the heading; the names listed (Bourdieu, Foucault, Habermas, Giddens, Frankfurt School) are the same

6.8 last block“Sustainable Development: Post-sustainable development; Development, violence and inequality; Post-structural perspectives (Escobar); Alternative development paradigms; Feminist critique; Human development”“Development and its critique: Post-development perspectives (Escobar); Alternative development paradigms; Feminist critique; Human development, development induced dispossession”Sustainable development and “Development, violence and inequality” removed; Escobar reframed; dispossession added

GATE 2026 XH-C6 syllabus and GATE 2027 XH6 syllabus (brochure pp.132–133); the comparison is ours.

Three readings are ours rather than IIT Madras’s, and worth stating plainly. First, the last block of 6.8 has been reframed more than rewritten. Feminist critique, human development, alternative development paradigms and Escobar were all in the 2026 text; what is new is the heading “Development and its critique”, the word “post-development” in place of “post-structural”, and “development induced dispossession”. What left is sustainable development and “Development, violence and inequality”. Second, globalization has not left the syllabus. It is still in 6.3 (“Social Transformations and Globalization”) and in 6.7 (“Social Movements, Civil Society and Globalization”), and “Post-colonial development” is still in 6.8. Only 6.8’s “Globalisation and Liberalization” line went. Third, Desai and Beteille are not new names: section 6.6 already cited them for the dialectical approach and agrarian sociology. Their addition to the 6.1 list of Indian thinkers means their wider work is now fair game.

Past questions that now sit on dropped text

We classified every Sociology question of the 2023–2026 papers against the 2027 sections and marked those that depend on a line the 2027 syllabus no longer carries. There are only three, worth five marks between them. Treat them as out of scope for 2027 practice, although nothing stops a setter from asking about a thinker or concept that is not named.

PaperWhat it askedDropped line
2023 Q54 (2 marks, MCQ)The WCED (Brundtland) definition of sustainable development6.8 “Sustainable Development”
2024 Q61 (2 marks, MSQ)Liberalization of the world economy6.8 “Globalisation and Liberalization”
2026 Q39 (1 mark, MCQ)C. Wright Mills, White Collar6.1 Conflict Theory: Mills

Official XH-C6 papers and final keys 2023–2026; classification is ours. The Sociology block is numbered Q27–Q65 in every paper.

The same classification shows that several of the “new” names were being asked already. Coser appeared in 2023 Q62, a question on conflict theorists that paired him with Dahrendorf. Popper and Kuhn appeared in 2023 Q52 and 2024 Q27 under the old unnamed “Philosophy of Science”. Westernization, Srinivas’s pair to Sanskritization, came up in 2025 Q35. The 2027 syllabus has named what the setters were already testing. Statistics was already being asked too (seven questions in 2023–2026, all MCQs). For the other additions (Althusser, etic and emic, Oommen and dispossession), there is no recent question to learn from.

Addition in 2027Asked before? What to know
Lewis CoserYes: 2023 Q62 (conflict theorists)Functions of social conflict; safety-valve institutions; realistic and non-realistic conflict
Louis AlthusserNoIdeological and repressive state apparatuses; interpellation; overdetermination

Karl Popper and Thomas KuhnYes: 2023 Q52; 2024 Q27Falsification; paradigms, normal science and scientific revolutions
Etic and emic approachesNoOutsider and insider perspectives; Pike and Harris; fieldwork implications
Statistical methodsSeven statistics questions 2023–26, under Research TechniquesMeasures of central tendency and dispersion, correlation, levels of measurement
WesternizationYes: 2025 Q35Srinivas’s definition and its contrast with Sanskritization
T. K. Oommen, social movementsNoHis approach to movements, identity and the nation-state
Development-induced dispossessionNoDisplacement by dams, mines and special economic zones; accumulation by dispossession

Question numbers from the official papers; “What to know” is our reading of each line, not an official specification.

Where the marks were, and how much the changes touch

The changes fall unevenly across the paper. By our count of 2023–2026, Sociological Theory (6.1) carried the most marks, an average of 15.25 of 60, and it has three of the changes. Indian Society (6.6) averaged 11.0 and gained one name. Sociological Concepts (6.3) averaged 10.25 and gained one word. Research Methodology (6.2) averaged 8.75 and changed in several lines. Sociology of Development (6.8), where the biggest removals are, averaged only 4.75, and just 1 mark in 2026. The changes are therefore smaller in marks than they look on the page.

Average marks per paper by 2027 section (of 60), 2023–2026
6.1 Theory (changed)15.25
6.6 Indian Society (changed)11.0
6.3 Concepts (changed)10.25
6.2 Methods (changed)8.75
6.8 Development (changed)4.75
6.5 Family (same)4.0
6.7 Movements (same)3.0
6.4 Agrarian (same)2.0

Our classification of the official XH-C6 papers and final keys. A mixed question in 2025 and 2026 fits no single section, so the averages sum to 59.

SectionChanged in 2027?Average marks 2023–26 (ours)

The same averages as the chart. Our section-wise weightage guide has the year-by-year breakdown.

What to do about it

If you prepared on the 2026 syllabus, the adjustment is modest. Drop the sustainable-development material and the State and Market block from your revision list, but keep globalization, because 6.3 and 6.7 still name it. Replace C. Wright Mills in your conflict-theory notes with Coser and Althusser. Read Popper and Kuhn properly rather than as a line in the philosophy-of-science chapter. Add an afternoon each on etic and emic approaches, Westernization and Oommen. Revise basic statistics, which the section has asked about seven times in four papers even before “Statistical Methods” was named. Finally, read Desai and Beteille as theorists, not only as names attached to agrarian studies.

One caution about old study material. Many guides, question banks and notes still follow the 2026 wording, including lists that tell you to revise sustainable development, and some give the wrong number of Sociology questions. Check any list you use against the 2027 table above. The official papers remain the best practice material; just skip the three questions listed earlier when you mark your score.

Reasoning and Comprehension: renamed, not rewritten

The compulsory 25-mark part keeps its content under the new code XH0, in four subsections: Reading Comprehension, Expression, Analytical Reasoning and Logical Reasoning. It is the same paper for all six Humanities sections, so the separate XH0 guide in our cluster, linked at the foot of this page, applies to Sociology candidates unchanged. By our count of the 2023–2026 papers, analytical puzzles carried most of its marks, not reading passages.

Practise it, don't just read it

Sociological Theory is the largest section, at 15.25 marks a paper on average, and most of its 2027 changes sit there. Start with the classical and interpretative traditions, which the syllabus change does not touch.

The ProSyllabus GATE Sociology library has nine topic quizzes today: Sociological Imagination and Biography; Status and Role Conflict; Culture, Norms and Values; Tribe, Ethnicity and Identity; Feminist Critiques of Patriarchy; Perspectives on Development; Micro-Politics of Development; Sustainable Development; and State and Market. The last two follow the 2026 syllabus, whose sustainable-development and State-and-Market lines the 2027 syllabus no longer names, so use them as background rather than as 2027 targets.

What is XH6 in GATE 2027?

XH6 is the new code for the Sociology section of the GATE Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) paper. It was called XH-C6 until GATE 2026. Reasoning and Comprehension, the compulsory part, is now XH0 (it was XH-B1).

What changed in the GATE Sociology syllabus for 2027?

Five of the eight sections changed wording. Mills was replaced by Coser and Althusser in conflict theory; Desai and Beteille joined the Indian thinkers; Popper and Kuhn, etic and emic approaches and statistical methods were added to methods; Westernization and T. K. Oommen were added; and in Sociology of Development the State and Market block, Epistemological Critiques and sustainable development were removed.

Is sustainable development in the GATE Sociology 2027 syllabus?

No. The 2027 XH6 syllabus replaced the 2026 heading “Sustainable Development” with “Development and its critique” and dropped post-sustainable development and “Development, violence and inequality”. Feminist critique, human development, alternative paradigms and Escobar remain.

Is globalization removed from the GATE Sociology syllabus?

Only partly. The 6.8 line “Globalisation and Liberalization” was removed, but globalization is still named in 6.3 (Social Transformations and Globalization) and in 6.7 (Social Movements, Civil Society and Globalization).

How many questions are in the GATE Sociology section?

39 questions for 60 marks (18 one-mark and 21 two-mark). With Reasoning and Comprehension (16 questions, 25 marks) and General Aptitude (10 questions, 15 marks), the paper has 65 questions for 100 marks.

Can I take GATE Sociology with another paper?

Only with ST (Statistics). For GATE 2027 the XH paper can be paired only with ST, and you cannot write two XH sections.

Where is the GATE 2027 Sociology syllabus PDF?

On the GATE 2027 website (IIT Madras) under exam papers and syllabus, as XH6_GATE2027_Syllabus.pdf. The same text is printed in the GATE 2027 information brochure. Both links are in the sources below.
