GATE reports three different numbers and they are easy to confuse. Marks are what you scored out of 100. The qualifying mark is the cut-off for your category. The GATE score (out of 1000) is what IIT Madras and every other institute actually ranks you by, and it depends on how everyone else did. This guide puts all three side by side for the four GATE Sociology papers with official reports, and adds a calculator that turns your mock-test marks into a score and an approximate rank on each year’s field. One fact shapes everything below: in both 2025 and 2026 the general qualifying mark was held down to 40 by a cap, and that has made Sociology scores unusually generous.

Where other pages get this wrong
The GATE Sociology (XH-C6) qualifying marks were 40 / 36 / 26.6 (General / OBC-NCL-EWS / SC-ST-PwD) in both 2025 and 2026, 36 / 32.4 / 24 in 2024 and 50 / 45 / 33.3 in 2023. Sociology was a single-session paper in every year 2023–2026, so no normalisation was applied.
Commonly published instead: Several preparation sites and blogs (checked 28 Sep 2026) print other figures for XH-C6, for example 38 / 34.2 / 25.3 for 2025, which is a different XH section’s 2023 row, or 43.9 for 2024. Careers360’s “GATE cutoff for XH” table has the XH-C6 figures right.

The candidate pool has doubled in four years, from 1,284 registrations in 2023 to 2,643 in 2026, and the paper is written mostly by women: 1,681 of the 2,643 registrants in 2026. Growth has not made the paper harder to qualify. The share qualifying rose from about a quarter in 2023 and 2024 to 30.9% in 2026, because of the cap explained below.
How the score is calculated
The official formula is Score = 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) ÷ (M̄t − Mq), capped at 1000. M is your mark, Mq the general qualifying mark and M̄t the mean mark of the top 0.1% or top 10 candidates, whichever is larger. So a mark exactly at the general qualifying mark always scores 350, and a mark equal to the top candidates’ mean scores 900. Sociology was a single-session paper in every year 2023–2026, so no normalisation applied: the same formula ran on raw marks.
The qualifying mark itself comes from a second formula. For GEN it is μ + σ (the mean plus one standard deviation of the marks of all who appeared), but never below 25. From GATE 2025 it is also never above 40. OBC-NCL and EWS get 0.9 of the GEN figure, and SC, ST and PwD get two-thirds. The cap is new: the GATE 2024 brochure said only “25 or μ+σ, whichever is larger”, with no upper limit. Relaxation for reserved categories is in these qualifying marks, not in ranks.
The 40-mark cap, twice
In 2025 μ + σ reached 55.72 and in 2026 43.26. Under the 2024 rules those would have been the GEN qualifying marks; the cap cut both to 40. Two things followed, both by our arithmetic on the official figures. First, far more candidates qualified: 998 of 1,546 (64.6%) in 2025 and 562 of 1,819 (30.9%) in 2026. Second, scores below the top candidates’ mean were pushed up, because the formula measures distance above a lower Mq. Above that mean the cap works the other way: 80 marks in 2025 scored 939 with the cap and would have scored about 967 without it (our arithmetic).

That is why the 2025 rank bands are so much deeper than the others, and the year the IIT Madras Development Studies general-category closing score jumped to 679 (IIT Madras 2025 cut-off PDF; see our IIT M.A. guide). A score stays valid for three years, but the score-to-rank relationship and admission cut-offs are year-specific. A 600 in 2025 was a rank of about 90–210; a 600 in 2026 was about 41–101. When you compare your score with an admission cut-off, check which year’s scores that cut-off was set on.

Work the other way round when you set a target. On the 2026 field a score of 500 needed about 47.9 marks, 600 about 53.1, 700 about 58.3 and 800 about 63.6. On the 2023 field, with no cap and a 50-mark Mq, the same scores needed 55.8 to 67.5. The answer depends heavily on the year; if the cap binds again in 2027, the 2025–2026 columns are the better guide.

Your GATE Sociology score, read against four years of official rank bands

The score distribution also shows how wide the field is. In 2026, 623 of the 1,819 candidates who appeared had a negative score (34%, our arithmetic), because their marks were far enough below 40 that the formula went below zero. A negative score is not a mistake; it is the formula at work. It does mean that the bottom third of the field is no competition for a candidate aiming at an admission cut-off.

Two report errors to avoid quoting
The statistical reports also print a qualifying score for each category. For 2025 and 2026 these match the formula (2026: 350 / 274 / 94). For 2023 and 2024 they do not. The 2024 report prints 225 for SC/ST/PwD, but 24 marks on the 2024 field works out to about 14, and the same report lists qualified candidates in the 0–99 score band at ranks 407–530, which could not happen if 225 were the floor. The 2023 report prints 224 for OBC and −68 for SC, where the formula gives 221.1 and −80.6. The qualifying marks are consistent everywhere, so quote those.

Practise it, don't just read it
On the 2026 field, 50 marks scored 541 and 60 marks scored 732. Sociological Theory carried the most marks on average (15.25 of 60 in 2023–2026, by our count), so it is the first section to secure.
The ProSyllabus GATE Sociology library has nine topic quizzes today: Sociological Imagination and Biography; Status and Role Conflict; Culture, Norms and Values; Tribe, Ethnicity and Identity; Feminist Critiques of Patriarchy; Perspectives on Development; Micro-Politics of Development; Sustainable Development; and State and Market. The last two follow the 2026 syllabus, whose sustainable-development and State-and-Market lines the 2027 syllabus no longer names, so use them as background rather than as 2027 targets.
