GATE ME Negative Marking: MSQs Vanished, MCQs Grew — What to Attempt

Checked 25 September 2026. Marking rules from the GATE 2027 brochure; question-type counts are our count of the official ME final keys 2023–2026; negative-total counts from the statistical reports.

GATE’s marking rules have not changed in recent brochures: multiple-choice questions lose a third of their marks for a wrong answer, while multiple-select and numerical-answer questions carry no penalty. What has changed is how many of each type the ME paper contains. Counting the official final keys, the subject marks carrying a penalty rose from 32 of 85 in 2023 to 47 in 2026, and multiple-select questions disappeared. This guide sets out the rules, the real question mix year by year, what it did to scores, and a calculator for the marks you put at risk.

Where other pages get this wrong

Multiple-select questions (MSQs) are a live question type in GATE — ME had 8, 2 and 1 of them in 2023, 2024 and 2025, though none in 2026.

Commonly published instead: Pattern tables listing only “MCQ” and “NAT” as GATE ME question types.

Adding General Aptitude’s 15 MCQ marks, 62 of the 100 marks in the 2026 paper carried a penalty, against 47 in 2023. Numerical questions — where guessing costs nothing but also almost never works — fell from 43 subject marks to 38. The paper has moved toward questions where a careless answer can cost marks, and there is no sign yet whether 2027 will continue the trend.

Two practical consequences follow. A candidate who used to bank on MSQs — where a partly-known question could be attempted without risk — now faces that share of the paper as penalty-carrying MCQs. And the numerical questions that remain are where a well-prepared candidate scores without any penalty risk, so NAT practice is still the safest source of marks.

What it did to scores

YearAppeared with a total of zero or belowLowest mark
20232,062 (3.2%)−11.33
202457−4.67
20251,567 (2.5%)−13
20263,225 (5.4%)−14

GATE statistical reports 2023–2026 (2023 counts “≤ 0”, later years “below 0”).

In 2026, more than 3,200 candidates finished with a negative total — 5.4% of those who sat, about one in eighteen and a half. That is the visible end of a wider effect: every wrong MCQ drags down scores all the way up the distribution. With 62 penalty-carrying marks on the paper, a candidate who attempts every MCQ and gets a third of them wrong loses about 7 marks to penalties alone (our arithmetic: a third of 62 marks wrong, times one-third). For a candidate scoring around 50 in 2026, 7 marks is the difference between about rank 900 and about rank 1,800 — our interpolation of the GATE 2026 report’s mark table, where 888 scored 50 or more and 2,521 scored 40 or more.

How many marks are you putting at risk?

Enter how many MCQs you plan to attempt and how many of them you expect to get wrong. NAT and MSQ answers carry no negative marks.

GATE 2027 brochure: MCQ penalty one-third of the marks (−1/3 for 1-mark, −2/3 for 2-mark); no negative and no partial marks for MSQ and NAT. Counts include General Aptitude MCQs.

General Aptitude deserves its own note. Its 15 marks were all MCQs in every year from 2023 to 2026 — five 1-mark and five 2-mark questions — so a quarter of the penalty exposure on the paper sits outside the engineering subject altogether. GA questions are usually shorter than subject questions, which makes them a good place to be both fast and careful.

When to guess

With four options and a penalty of one-third, a blind guess on an MCQ has an expected value of exactly zero: a 1-in-4 chance of the full mark against a 3-in-4 chance of losing a third. Eliminating even one option tips it positive; eliminating two makes a guess clearly worth taking. The calculator below does the arithmetic for 1- and 2-mark questions. On NAT and MSQ questions nothing is lost by answering, so every one should be attempted if time allows — but a guessed numerical answer is very unlikely to be exactly right.

Should you guess? The negative-marking calculator

Pick the question type and how many of the four options you can confidently rule out. The calculator shows your expected marks from answering versus leaving it blank.

One+0.111+0.222
Two+0.333+0.667

Expected marks from a guess among the remaining options, with four options and a one-third penalty (our arithmetic from the brochure’s rules).

Questions awarded to everyone

When a question is found to be flawed, GATE awards its marks to every candidate. For ME this happened to one question in 2023 (Q55, a NAT), to five in 2024 (General Aptitude Q7 and Q10; ME Q19, Q34 and Q63), and to none in 2025 or 2026. It is a reminder that a question that seems impossible sometimes is — leave it, move on, and let the key sort it out.

Numerical answers: accuracy and the virtual calculator

Numerical-answer questions carried 38 subject marks in 2026 and between 43 and 48 in the three years before. They cannot be guessed, carry no penalty, and are marked right only if the answer falls in the key’s range — so the risk is arithmetic, not guessing. Only the on-screen virtual calculator is allowed, which is slower than a physical one; practising NATs with the GATE virtual calculator, and carrying enough decimal places through the working, recovers marks that are otherwise lost to rounding.

MCQ, two options eliminatedAnswer — expected value is positive
MCQ, one option eliminatedSlightly positive; answer if time remains
MCQ, no ideaLeave it — expected value is zero, and variance only hurts a good score

Our suggestion, from the official marking rules.

Practise it, don't just read it

Accuracy is worth more than coverage in a paper with 62 penalty-carrying marks. Our GATE ME quizzes let you test accuracy topic by topic.

The ProSyllabus GATE ME library has topic quizzes on engineering mathematics, statics, strength of materials, theory of machines and vibrations, fluid mechanics and turbomachinery, thermodynamics, conduction, convection and radiation, refrigeration and air conditioning, and manufacturing — the first quiz is free.

Is there negative marking in GATE ME?

Yes, on MCQs only: −1/3 for a 1-mark and −2/3 for a 2-mark question.

Is there negative marking for NAT questions in GATE?

No — and none for MSQs either.

Are there partial marks for MSQs in GATE?

No — all correct options must be chosen.

How many MSQs were in GATE ME 2026?

None, by our count of the official key (8 in 2023).

How many marks in GATE ME 2026 carried negative marking?

47 of the 85 subject marks, plus all 15 General Aptitude marks.

How many candidates scored negative in GATE ME 2026?

3,225 of 59,612 who appeared.

Should I guess in GATE ME?

On NAT and MSQ, yes; on MCQs only when you can eliminate at least one option.

How many questions should I attempt in GATE ME?

As many as you can answer reliably — accuracy matters more than the count on a paper with this many MCQs.

What is the GATE ME exam pattern?

65 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours: General Aptitude 15 and the subject 85, of which maths is 13.

Can I use a calculator in GATE ME?

Only the on-screen virtual calculator.

Were any GATE ME questions given marks to all?

One in 2023 and five in 2024 (two in GA); none in 2025 or 2026.

Are General Aptitude questions in GATE ME negatively marked?

Yes — all 15 GA marks were MCQs in 2023–2026, so all carried the one-third penalty.

Is a blind guess worth it in GATE ME?

Its expected value is zero on an MCQ; ruling out one option makes it positive.
