Checked 25 September 2026. Plan structure is our suggestion. The inputs are official: the GATE 2027 dates, the section marks in the 2024–2026 papers (our count) and the 2026 mark distribution. EE’s own exam date was not yet published.
From 25 September 2026 to the first GATE 2027 exam day, 6 February 2027, is 134 days — about 19 weeks. That is enough time to revise the whole EE syllabus once, fix the weakest sections and sit every recent official paper under exam conditions, if the time is planned. This guide builds a week-by-week plan from official numbers rather than guesswork: section time weighted by the marks each section actually carried in the 2024–2026 papers, and targets set from the real 2026 mark-to-rank data.
GATE 2027 IB; GATE 2026 Statistical Report (our sums); our comparison of the EE syllabi.
Step 1: set a target in marks
| Goal (2026 benchmarks) | Score | Approx. marks on the 2026 field | Approx. candidates at or above |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualify (GEN) | 350 | 27.7 | about 13,700 qualified |
| Wide choice of NIT M.Tech programmes | ~400 | ~32 | ~6,000 |
| Top NIT Power Electronics, Round 1 / NPCIL shortlist (UR) | ~580–630 | ~48–52 | ~700–1,100 |
| IIT Madras EE (GEN) | 730 | ~61 | ~200–230 |
Illustrative estimates: marks from the official GATE 2026 formula (Mq 27.7, M̄t 75.45); candidate counts interpolated within the official 10-mark bands of the 2026 appeared-marks table (7,549 at 30 or more, 2,760 at 40, 870 at 50, 227 at 60). CCMT 2026 (NIT Trichy Power Electronics, OPEN Round 1), NPCIL 2026 (UR shortlist) and IIT Madras 2026 (Power Systems & Power Electronics, GEN) from our PSU and M.Tech guides. The 2027 field will differ.
Write your target down as marks, because marks are what you control in the hall. Then work out where they will come from: 15 GA marks are the most reliable on the paper, Engineering Mathematics carries 13 marks by the brochure’s rule, and the rest has to come from the nine EE subject sections.
Step 2: weight the sections by what the papers carry
| Section | Mean marks 2024–26 | Suggested share of subject time |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics | 14.7 | 16% |
| Power Systems | 10.3 | 12% |
| Power Electronics | 10.0 | 12% |
| Electrical Machines | 8.7 | 11% |
| Analog and Digital Electronics | 8.7 | 10% |
| Signals and Systems | 8.0 | 10% |
| Control Systems | 8.0 | 10% |
| Electric Circuits | 7.7 | 10% |
| Electromagnetic Fields | 5.7 | 6% |
| Measurements | 3.3 | 3% |
Mean marks: our count of the official 2024–2026 EE papers. Shares: our suggestion, roughly proportional to the means, with a floor so no section is dropped (single sections swung by up to 8 marks between years).
Step 3: the 19 weeks
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1–2 (late Sep–early Oct) | Diagnose: sit the 2026 official paper in three hours; mark by section; finish the application by 27 Sep / 5 Oct |
| 3–10 (Oct–Nov) | First full pass of all ten sections, heaviest first: mathematics, power systems, power electronics, machines; then analog/digital, signals, control, circuits, fields, measurements |
| 11–13 (Dec) | Second pass on the three weakest sections from week 1; recurring topics (economic load dispatch, converters, state space, load flow) |
| 14–16 (late Dec–mid Jan) | Official papers 2025, 2024, 2023 in three hours each, with negative marking; exam city out 4 Jan |
| 17–19 (mid Jan–Feb) | Mocks on the virtual calculator; GA practice; revise formula sheets; no new topics in the last week |
Our suggested structure. Adjust once EE’s own exam date is published.
Plan your hours to your GATE EE 2027 date
Choose your likely exam day and how many hours a week you can study. The planner counts the weeks left from today and splits your total hours across the paper.
Our editorial split of total hours: subject sections roughly in proportion to the three-year mean marks in the table above (scaled to about 78% of the time), General Aptitude 8% and timed papers 14%. The phase dates in the 19-week table assume 6 February; if your paper falls later in the window, stretch the later phases.
Step 4: practise the way the paper is marked
The 2026 paper put 55 of its 85 subject marks on MCQs (our count of the official key: 19 one-mark and 18 two-mark MCQs), which carry negative marking, and 1,763 EE candidates finished below zero that year (5,263 in 2025). So every practice paper should be marked with the penalty, and every mock should be done on the virtual calculator, not a physical one. Enter every NAT and MSQ answer you have worked out — a wrong one scores zero, like a blank — and attempt MCQs where you can eliminate at least one option, which makes the expected value positive under the −1/3 and −2/3 penalties. Our guide on negative marking has a calculator for that decision.
A weekly routine that fits the plan
Our suggested week, for a candidate with around 25 hours: four or five weekday blocks of two to three hours on the week’s section — concepts first, then the past-paper questions on that section with the official key; one short daily block of 20–30 minutes on General Aptitude or mathematics drill; and at the weekend one longer block for a timed sectional test or, from December, a full three-hour paper. Keep a single running sheet of formulas and a separate list of mistakes; in the last three weeks those two documents, not new material, are what you revise.
After the exam: dates that follow the result
| When | What |
|---|---|
| 19 March 2027 | GATE 2027 result; score valid three years |
| Spring 2027 (2026 pattern) | PSU advertisements that use GATE 2027 — NTPC (Ad 11/26), POWERGRID (CC/03/2026) and Grid-India (CC/26/2026) have already advertised; NPCIL’s 2026 detailed advert came about ten days after the result |
| May–August 2027 (2026 pattern) | CCMT for NIT M.Tech (2026: registration 15 May–5 June, rounds June–July, spot round August) and COAP for IIT offers (2026: May–July) |
GATE 2027 IB; PSU advertisements; CCMT 2026 schedule; IIT Roorkee COAP 2026 offer lists. 2027 dates for CCMT and COAP were not yet published.
Five planning mistakes the data warns against
- Planning from one year’s weightage. Electric Circuits went from 4 marks in 2025 to 12 in 2026; plan from the three-year means and keep every section in play.
- Replacing study material. The 2027 EE syllabus is unchanged, so 2026 notes and question banks remain aligned; buying new ones costs time for nothing.
- Comparing raw marks across years. The same 50 marks was a score of about 777 in 2023 and 607 in 2026; set targets as ranks or scores.
- Ignoring negative marking in practice. In 2025, 5,263 EE candidates ended with a negative total; practise with the penalty so the habit is set before February.
- Practising on a physical calculator. Only the on-screen virtual calculator is allowed; its speed should be part of your mock timing from December.
Keeping on track
Two checks keep a plan honest. First, re-sit an official paper every three to four weeks and compare the section totals with your week-1 diagnosis; a section that is not improving needs a different method, not just more hours. Second, convert your practice total to a 2026-field score with our calculator: the gap to your target, in marks, tells you how many more you need and from which sections. The EE syllabus did not change for 2027, so everything from the 2021–2026 official papers is fair practice.
Section tracker
Tick each section when you have revised it once and scored at least its three-year mean on its past-paper questions.

How many days are left for GATE 2027?
134 days from 25 September 2026 to the first exam day, 6 February 2027.
Is four months enough for GATE EE?
Enough for one full revision, targeted work on weak sections and every recent official paper — if the syllabus has been studied once before.
Which sections should I study first for GATE EE?
The heaviest on average: Engineering Mathematics, Power Systems, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines, and Analog and Digital Electronics.
How many marks do I need for a good rank in GATE EE?
On the 2026 field, about 50 marks was a top-870 performance and about 60 a top-230 one.
When is the GATE EE 2027 exam?
In the 6–21 February 2027 window; EE’s own date was not yet published.
Should I give mocks on the virtual calculator?
Yes — only the on-screen calculator is allowed in the exam.
How many official papers should I solve?
At least 2024–2026 under full conditions, then 2021–2023.
Did the GATE EE syllabus change for 2027?
No topic changed, so all recent papers remain valid practice.
How much time should go to General Aptitude?
A small, steady share — it is 15 marks and usually the fastest on the paper.
Should I study new topics in the last week?
Our suggestion is no: the last week is for revision, formula sheets and one or two timed mocks.
When do PSUs advertise after the GATE result?
It varies: NPCIL’s 2026 detailed advertisement came about ten days after the result, while NTPC, POWERGRID and Grid-India advertised their GATE 2027 recruitments months before the exam.
When does CCMT 2027 start?
Not yet announced; in 2026 registration ran from 15 May to 5 June.
How many hours a week should I study for GATE EE?
There is no official figure; the planner above shows what your chosen hours add up to by section before your exam day.
