KNM exam at a glance

KNM is a knowledge exam rather than a language exam, which is why it sits in DUO's kennisexamens section next to ONA. Unlike ONA, which involves portfolio result cards plus either a 64-hour course or a final interview, KNM is a single timed computer session with no coursework attached.

KNM is an on-demand exam, so the only calendar that matters is the queue at your chosen test location. Treat DUO's six-week warning as a floor rather than an average, and book before you feel ready if your integration deadline is close.

What this means for your preparation

The recurring error is assuming KNM is a formality that can be left until the language exams are out of the way. It is booked from the same queue as everything else, and DUO's own warning is that more than six weeks can pass between registering and sitting. A candidate who leaves KNM to the last quarter of their integration period is relying on a slot that DUO does not guarantee exists. The second error is preparing from the wrong law, because DUO runs parallel knowledge-exam tracks for 2013 and 2021 and does not say on its public pages which one is yours.

Book KNM first, not last

KNM is the cheapest and shortest exam in the set at EUR 50 and 45 minutes, and it is the one least dependent on your language progress because the questions are about Dutch society rather than Dutch grammar. That makes it the sensible first booking. Registering early costs nothing extra, the slot can be changed or cancelled up to a week before, and clearing KNM early removes one component from the pile while you are still working on reading and writing. The reverse order leaves you negotiating a six-week queue with a deadline overhead. There is also a location variable that the national pages do not expose: because you choose both the date and the place in Mijn Inburgering, a centre in a smaller city may be offering slots weeks ahead of the one nearest you, and the cost is the same EUR 50 wherever you sit.

Know which law you are under

DUO runs separate knowledge-exam pathways for the Wet inburgering 2013 and the Wet inburgering 2021, and the public pages deliberately do not tell you which one applies. Your Mijn Inburgering file does. This matters in money terms: under the 2021 law DUO lists the four language exams and KNM at EUR 50 each for a EUR 250 total, with PVT free, whereas ONA at EUR 40 appears under the 2013 arrangements. Reading a guide written for the other law is the fastest way to prepare for exams you do not have to sit.

Use the two official practice papers as the spec

DUO does not publish the number of questions in the live KNM exam or the pass mark on its public pages, so the two official practice exams, Oefenexamen KNM 1 and KNM 2, are the closest thing to a published specification. Work through both under a 45-minute clock rather than reading them as notes, because the constraint that catches people out is pace across several themed blocks rather than any single hard question. Treat commercial KNM practice sites as supplementary; only these two are DUO's own. The themes DUO names on its content page, wonen and werk en inkomen, tell you the register to expect: everyday administrative Dutch about housing, employment and income rather than history or politics for their own sake. Prepare the vocabulary of forms, landlords, contracts and payslips rather than a general knowledge list.

Check the exemption list before paying

DUO lists routes to sitting fewer exams or none at all: serious illness or disability, a diploma obtained in the Netherlands or an equivalent Dutch-language diploma from Belgium or Suriname, ten years of residence in the Netherlands including at least five in work, special circumstances, or a completed 600-hour course. A partial exemption route exists for holders of an NT2 certificate or diploma and for people with at least six months of recent Dutch employment. Any of these is worth testing before you spend EUR 250, because the exemption is assessed on your file rather than claimed at the exam.

The fines position has changed, the deadline has not

DUO's own page now states that the Raad van State has ruled it may not fine people who take too long to integrate, and may not reclaim money from an integration loan, covering status holders under both laws. The published amounts, EUR 340 for PVT, EUR 340 for MAP and a maximum of EUR 1,000 for the learning route, remain on the page as the framework. Do not read the ruling as removing the obligation itself: DUO still states the exam duty runs until AOW state pension age, and a residence or naturalisation application is judged on exams passed, not on fines avoided.

How long is the KNM exam and what is in it?

DUO states the exam is taken on a computer and lasts 45 minutes. You are given several themes and must answer questions under each one; the examples DUO names are wonen, meaning housing, and werk en inkomen, meaning work and income. DUO does not publish the number of questions or the pass mark on its public pages, so the two official practice exams it hosts, KNM 1 and KNM 2, are the best available guide to the length and style of the question sets.

How much does KNM cost in 2026?

DUO lists KNM at EUR 50, identical to each of the four language exams, Schrijven, Spreken, Luisteren and Lezen, which brings the full set to EUR 250. For asylum status holders DUO states the first two attempts at each exam are free, and the participation declaration route PVT is free under the 2021 law. Family migrants and other non-asylum candidates pay themselves or arrange financing. ONA at EUR 40 appears under the older 2013 arrangements rather than the 2021 set.

When can I take the KNM exam?

There is no national exam calendar for KNM. You log in to Mijn Inburgering, choose a date and a location, and are booked into whatever the queue at that centre allows. DUO's stated warning is that it can take more than six weeks before you can actually sit, so register well in advance. Changes and cancellations are allowed up to one week before the exam, which gives you room to bring a booking forward if an earlier slot opens.

Is KNM part of the inburgeringsexamen?

Yes. DUO lists the components as Lezen, Luisteren, Schrijven, Spreken, Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij, Oriëntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt and the Participatieverklaringstraject.
