KNM Exam Fee and Booking 2026: EUR 50, the 6-Week Wait and the 7-Day Rule

Checked 29 September 2026. From DUO pages on registering, paying, locations, rules and results, DUO news items (Nov 2025, Jan 2026) and the Regeling inburgering 2021. Waiting times per location are not published; the Zwolle location moves on 1 October 2026.

The KNM exam costs EUR 50 for each attempt, under both integration laws. You book it yourself in Mijn Inburgering, choose the date and location, and can change or cancel for a refund up to one week before. DUO warns that a seat "may take more than 6 weeks", and your result comes by letter within 8 weeks. Plan around those two numbers. For the IND what usually counts is the civic integration diploma, which DUO issues only once you have passed every exam you need, not a single KNM result; for an integration term, the deadline in Mijn Inburgering is the one that applies to you. This guide covers the fees by law, the booking steps, the locations, the day, the result and diploma, and retakes. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. We are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, DUO, the IND or the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment; every rule below is quoted or summarised from their published pages and regulations, and DUO or the IND decides every individual case.

Conflict: DUO's EUR 250 total under the 2021 Act

  • DUO's cost table for the 2021 Act lists four language exams and KNM at EUR 50 each, a total of EUR 250.
  • Under the 2021 Act the main route, the B1 route, uses the Staatsexamen NT2 at B1 for the language part (Wet inburgering 2021 art 7), not the EUR 50 A2 exams. The Regeling sets EUR 50 only for KNM and the A2 components.
  • So EUR 250 is right for someone sitting the A2 language exams: a voluntary candidate for the IND, or someone whose B1 route was scaled down to A2 after 600 hours of lessons. For B1-route candidates the total is KNM plus the state exam fee, which we did not capture from a primary page. Note the levels: Staatsexamen NT2 programme I is B1 and programme II is B2, and our NT2 page covers programme II.

Who pays. Under the 2021 Act, asylum status holders get their first two attempts at each exam free, but not below the level in their personal plan; after that they pay and cannot borrow (DUO; Regeling inburgering 2021 art 3.5). DUO's paying page states that rule for the 2021 Act only, so do not assume it under the 2013 Act. Family migrants and other migrants pay themselves or borrow from DUO, which DUO ties to courses at approved schools. Someone integrating voluntarily can also borrow: DUO checks when you were first registered with the municipality, and you can borrow until 3 years after that date (DUO borrowing page).

If you cannot log in, DUO has a paper form, "Aanmelding inburgeringsexamen". To change or cancel without Mijn Inburgering, write to DUO Servicecentrum Inburgering, Postbus 764, 9700 AT Groningen, so that the letter arrives at least 7 days before the exam. DUO's November 2025 news item announced the shorter window for the A2 exams; its registration page applies the one-week rule to the KNM, ONA and A2 exams alike.

Plan backwards from your deadline

KNM booking planner: when to book for a deadline

Enter the date by which you need the result in hand: an IND application, or the end of your integration term. Pick how long you expect to wait for a seat. The planner works back through the queue and DUO's 8-week result window.

A scheduling estimate, not a legal answer. Our arithmetic on DUO's published rules: a seat "may take more than 6 weeks", results by letter within 8 weeks, change or cancel with a refund until 1 week before. DUO publishes no waiting time per location, so the wait is your assumption. Whether a term counts the exam date or the result date is not stated on the pages we read, so the planner assumes you need the result. For the IND you usually need the diploma, which comes only after every exam you need is passed.

If you need the result byBook by, with a 6-week waitBook by, with a 10-week waitWith one retake (6-week wait)

1 October 202725 June 202728 May 202719 March 2027

Our arithmetic, as in the planner: each cycle is the wait for a seat plus 8 weeks for the result (14 weeks with a 6-week wait, 18 with a 10-week wait). DUO publishes neither a fixed wait nor a guaranteed result date; the KNM result letter comes within 8 weeks and the result also appears in Mijn Inburgering. For Speaking A2 and Writing A2, DUO said on 31 July 2026 that marking now takes up to 16 weeks, and that someone near the end of the term who is waiting for one of those results gets 6 months' extension.

Sources: DUO knowledge-exams and language-exams pages; DUO examenreglement; Regeling inburgering 2021, explanatory annex. The annex says that in some cases (A2 and KNM) a candidate can take several parts on one day if they wish.

Conflict: the annex's 320-minute total

  • The Regeling annex says the whole exam takes 320 minutes including 15 minutes of instruction per exam.
  • Its own five net times add up to 30 + 50 + 45 + 35 + 45 = 205 minutes; with 5 x 15 minutes of instruction that is 280 minutes, not 320 (our arithmetic). DUO's current times give 35 + 65 + 45 + 40 + 45 = 230, plus 75 minutes of instruction, 305 minutes (our arithmetic).
  • We could not reconcile the 320 with either set of times. For planning a day, use DUO's examenreglement.

Sources: Regeling inburgering 2021, explanatory annex; DUO examenreglement. Both totals are our arithmetic.

For KNM the two sources agree: 45 minutes. For the language exams they do not, and we print both. DUO's examenreglement gives the same times as its web pages (Reading 65, Writing up to 40, Speaking 35, Listening 45, KNM 45 minutes) and adds 15 minutes of instructions before each exam, so instruction time does not explain the gap with the annex. For planning a day, use DUO's figures plus 15 minutes per exam.

On the day

Bring a valid ID. DUO's list includes a passport or identity card issued outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland (an Indian passport qualifies if valid) and a Dutch residence document of types I to IV. Without a valid ID you cannot sit the exam and must register again. DUO's examenreglement asks you to be there 30 minutes before the exam starts, because you have to identify yourself first. You promise to keep the exam secret, and you may not take photos or copy questions; disturbing others after a warning, or aggressive behaviour, ends your exam as invalid.

Results, the diploma and retakes

The result comes by letter within 8 weeks and appears in Mijn Inburgering. Since 1 January 2026 the integration diploma is digital; DUO says the IND and municipalities accept it. The diploma becomes available only once you have passed all the exams you need; if KNM is your last one, its result is what completes it. The first paper diploma is free and sent once, taking up to 8 weeks, which matters if you need to show it at an embassy; a duplicate later costs EUR 72 (DUO diploma page).

Retakes. The DUO pages we read publish no limit on the number of KNM attempts. Our reading of the fee rules is that each attempt is a new booking and a new EUR 50, except the two free attempts for asylum status holders under the 2021 Act. Under the 2013 Act, three attempts at all exams is one of the conditions for the 600-hour exemption, and DUO counts attempts in the advice on demonstrable effort. So keep your attempt history; it can help you later. We have no official pass rate or pass mark to tell you how likely a retake is.

How much does the KNM exam cost?

EUR 50 for each attempt, under both the 2013 and the 2021 Act. Under the 2021 Act, asylum status holders get their first two attempts free.

How do I book KNM?

In Mijn Inburgering, with DigiD: choose the exam, a date and a location, then pay. There is a paper form, Aanmelding inburgeringsexamen, if you cannot log in.

How long is the wait for a KNM exam?

DUO says only that it may take more than 6 weeks. It publishes no waiting time per location.

Can I cancel and get my money back?

Yes, if you cancel until 1 week before the exam. DUO's November 2025 news shortened the window from 14 to 7 days for the A2 exams; its registration page now applies one week to KNM too.

When do I get my KNM result?

By letter within 8 weeks, and in Mijn Inburgering.

Is the integration diploma still on paper?

It is digital since 1 January 2026 and the IND and municipalities accept it. The first paper copy is free and takes up to 8 weeks; a duplicate costs EUR 72.

How many times can I retake KNM?

The DUO pages we read publish no limit. Each retake is a new booking and a new EUR 50 (our reading), apart from the two free attempts for asylum status holders under the 2021 Act.

Is my Indian passport valid ID for the exam?

DUO accepts a valid passport or identity card issued outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, and a Dutch residence document of types I to IV.

Where are the exam locations?

Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle. Zwolle moves to Van Wevelinkhovenstraat 1 from 1 October 2026.
