Checked 25 September 2026. DOH publishes no blueprint or reading list. The time split in the planner is ours; the DHA reading list and Kuwait blueprint are quoted as labelled comparisons, not DOH requirements.
Preparing for the DOH exam is harder to plan than for Dubai or Kuwait for one simple reason: DOH does not publish what it tests. There is no blueprint, no topic weighting and no public reading list — only a question count, a time limit and an e-mail address for study material. This guide sets out what DOH does give you, the nearest official reading list published by another UAE regulator, and a plan built from DOH's own scope of practice. The split of hours is ours and says so.
Where other pages get this wrong
DOH has no public nursing exam blueprint; it asks candidates to e-mail exam@doh.gov.ae for the study materials available.
Commonly published instead: "Official DOH/HAAD nursing syllabus 2026" with percentage weights per topic.
DOH's FAQ answers "How to prepare for the exam (exam references)?" with "Contact exam@DOH.gov.ae to provide you with the available study materials for CBT exams". No blueprint, domain weighting or candidate bulletin appears on doh.gov.ae or Pearson VUE's DOH pages. Any weighted "DOH syllabus" online is someone else's estimate.

What DOH does give you
| Source | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Licensing Service Catalogue (2024) | Question count, duration, fee and exam type for each title |
| DOH FAQ 3.6 | E-mail exam@doh.gov.ae for the available CBT study materials — ask; it costs nothing |
| Scope of Practice – Nursing (2022) | What an Assistant Nurse, Registered Nurse and specialty nurse are expected to do — the best official map of what an exam can fairly test |
| Unified PQR (2025) | That the exam is in English and that the authorities may re-examine when necessary |
| DOH standards and policies | Abu Dhabi rules on CPD, infection control and professional conduct — useful for the "regulations" questions every Gulf exam carries |
The scope of practice as a revision map
DOH's scope of practice separates the two main titles clearly, and that separation is the most useful thing a candidate can read. Assistant Nurses provide care "as delegated and supervised by the registered nurse": help with ambulation, transfers, hygiene and range of motion, non-drug comfort measures, observing and reporting changes, intake and output, height and weight, transporting patients and specimens, and health education. They "are not expected to have a role in preparation, administration or documentation of medications". Registered Nurses work through the whole nursing process — systematic assessment, nursing diagnosis, outcomes, planning, implementation and evaluation — including inserting, managing and removing IV and urinary catheters, recognising and acting on abnormal vital signs, and basic life support.
| Scope item (DOH, 2022) | Revise as | Title |
|---|---|---|
| Systematic assessment and data collection | Health assessment, normal values, priority setting | RN |
| Nursing diagnosis and care planning | Nursing process questions: "what should the nurse do first?" | RN |
| IV and urinary catheters | Insertion, care, complications, infection prevention | RN |
| Vital signs and abnormalities | Early warning signs, when to escalate | RN and AN (AN observes and reports) |
| Basic life support | Current BLS sequence, compressions, airway | RN (a valid BLS card is required of all nurses and midwives, PQR 13.1.11) |
| Activities of daily living, mobility, hygiene | Safe handling, pressure-injury prevention, falls | AN and RN |
| Delegation and supervision | What an AN may and may not do — medication is outside AN scope | RN and AN |
| Health promotion and screening | Patient education, infection screening, community health | AN and RN |
Scope items from DOH's Scope of Practice – Nursing (DOH/SOP/NP/V1, Nov 2022), sections 5.6.1–5.6.2. The "Revise as" column is our suggestion.
The nearest published reading list is Dubai's
Dubai Health Authority, which shares the PQR with DOH, does publish a reference list for its Registered Nurse exam. It is not DOH's list, and DOH has never said its questions come from these books — but as the only official nursing-exam reading list in the UAE it is a sensible spine for revision:
| Area | DHA reference (Sep 2026 guideline) |
|---|---|
| Fundamentals and skills | Kozier and Erb's Fundamentals of Nursing; Lynn & LeBon, Skill Checklists for Taylor's Clinical Nursing Skills |
| Health assessment | Jarvis, Physical Examination and Health Assessment |
| Medical-surgical | Brunner and Suddarth's Medical-Surgical Nursing |
| Pharmacology | Mosby's Pharmacology in Nursing |
| Maternal-newborn | Murray & McKinney, Foundations of Maternal-Newborn Nursing |
| Paediatrics | Wong's Nursing Care of Infants and Children |
| Critical care | Sole, Introduction to Critical Care Nursing |
| Mental health | Townsend, Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing |
| Nutrition · community · ethics | Dudek; Allender & Rector; ANA Code of Ethics |
From DHA's computer-based test guideline (updated Sep 2026). Use current editions.
For weighting, the nearest Gulf nursing blueprint published item by item is Kuwait's (not a UAE exam): 150 questions split fundamentals 30 (including physical assessment 9, pharmacology 6 and nutrition 3), adult nursing 60 (including critical care 11, community 12 and mental health 7), maternal–child 45 and management and leadership 15. Again, that is Kuwait's exam and not DOH's; it is useful only as evidence that Gulf RN exams of this length lean heavily on adult medical-surgical nursing.
Kuwait licensing-exam reference PDF on Prometric's MOH Kuwait page. DOH publishes no split.
A study plan
The planner splits your hours using our own weighting — adult medical-surgical nursing largest, as in Kuwait's published blueprint, then maternal–child health and fundamentals, with separate time for pharmacology, critical care and mental health. It is a starting point, not DOH's blueprint; move hours towards whatever your mock results show is weakest. The exam dates in the list are planning targets only: you cannot book until DOH has approved your credentials and you have paid the exam fee in TAMM, so pick the date closest to when you expect that to happen.
Plan your hours to your target exam date
Choose your likely exam day and how many hours a week you can study. The planner counts the weeks left from today and splits your total hours across the paper.
| Weeks | Focus | Check |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Fundamentals, assessment, the nursing process; one pharmacology topic a week; dosage calculation daily | A 50-question timed set at 72 seconds each |
| 4–7 | Medical-surgical nursing by system (cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal, neuro) | Topic quizzes per system; keep a list of every question you guessed |
| 8–9 | Maternal, newborn and child health; mental health | Mixed timed sets |
| 10–11 | Critical care, emergency, infection control, ethics and Abu Dhabi professional rules | A full 150-question, 3-hour mock each week |
| 12 | Your weakest areas only; rest before the exam | One last full mock no later than three days before |
A 12-week outline, ours. For the Assistant Nurse exam, cut the pharmacology and critical-care weeks and give the time to fundamentals, safe basic care and observation.

DOH, DHA or MOHAP?
| Item | DOH (Abu Dhabi) | DHA (Dubai) | MOHAP (Northern Emirates) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portal | TAMM + UAE PASS | Sheryan | MOHAP e-services / UAE PASS |
| Exam vendor | Pearson VUE | Prometric | Prometric |
| RN exam | 150 MCQs, 3 hours | 150 questions, 3 hours including registration | Not published |
| Pass mark | Not published (internal cut score) | 50% | Not published |
| Blueprint or reading list | Neither; e-mail for study material | Four areas and a reading list, no weights | Neither |
| No-show counts as an attempt? | No (booking fee lost) — DOH FAQ 3.4 | No — DHA assessment manual 4.15 | Yes — Prometric's MOHAP page |
| Qualification rules | Unified PQR | Unified PQR | Unified PQR |
The qualification rules are the same everywhere, and attempts count across all of them, so the choice between emirates is really about where you want to work. Once licensed, moving is usually a recognition rather than a new exam: DOH's FAQ exempts holders of a valid (or recently cancelled) DHA or MOHAP licence for the same title who are in good standing, and DHA's manual exempts those applying within five years of a DOH licence cancellation for the same position with no gap. Credentialing, verification and the attempt limits still apply.
Practise it, don't just read it
With no blueprint to lean on, broad timed practice is the preparation. Start with the free quiz and work through every topic.
The ProSyllabus DOH nursing library has topic quizzes for Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing (cardiovascular and respiratory; renal, endocrine and gastrointestinal), Pharmacology for Nurses, Maternal and Child Health, Critical Care and Emergency, Infection Prevention and Control and Professional Practice and Abu Dhabi Health Regulations — the first one is free.
What is the syllabus for the DOH nursing exam?
DOH publishes none. Its FAQ says to e-mail exam@doh.gov.ae for the available study materials; its Scope of Practice – Nursing is the best official guide to what each title does.
Which books should I study for the DOH exam?
DOH names no books. Dubai's official RN reading list — Kozier and Erb, Brunner and Suddarth, Jarvis, Mosby's Pharmacology, Murray & McKinney, Wong, Sole, Townsend — is the nearest UAE list.
How long should I prepare for the DOH nursing exam?
DOH sets no figure. Our outline is 12 weeks at about 12 hours a week; you have 6 months from approval to pass.
Which topics carry the most weight in the DOH exam?
DOH does not say. Gulf RN exams that do publish weights, such as Kuwait's, give adult medical-surgical nursing the largest share.
Is the DOH exam harder than the DHA exam?
Nobody can say from official data: DOH publishes no pass mark, DHA publishes 50%. Both RN exams are 150 questions in 3 hours.
Are HAAD exam questions repeated?
DOH says nothing about question reuse, and no official past papers exist. Be wary of anything sold as "real HAAD questions".
How should Assistant Nurses prepare for the DOH exam?
Focus on safe basic care, observation and reporting, infection control, mobility and hygiene and the limits of AN scope — DOH says medication is outside it.
How many mock tests should I take before the DOH exam?
DOH sets no number; we suggest a full 150-question, 3-hour mock each week in the last month.
Can I get study material from DOH?
Yes — DOH's FAQ says to contact exam@doh.gov.ae for the available CBT study materials.
Should I choose DOH, DHA or MOHAP?
The qualification rules are the same and attempts count across all three, so choose the emirate where you want to work; moving later is a licence recognition, not a new exam.
