Does Your Degree Need the dMAT? BCA, B.Com, B.Sc, B.Tech and BBA Checked

Checked 12 October 2026. From the APS India dMAT page (last updated 13 July 2026) and the official Affected Fields List, version 1.0 of 29 June 2026. APS may publish a new version; the official wording on your degree documents and APS India's classification are decisive.

From the summer semester 2027 Master intake, some Indian applicants must add a dMAT certificate to their APS file. Whether you are one of them depends on the field of your previous degree, and APS India has published an official list of those fields. The list is more precise than most summaries of it: a B.Tech is not automatically covered, and neither is BCA or a B.Sc in Computer Science. This guide walks through the list degree by degree, sets out the exemptions, and gives you a checker for your own case.

Who the dMAT applies to

The APS dMAT page says the dMAT applies to Master's applicants whose previous degree falls within one of three field groups — Engineering; Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics; and Business / Management — for applications relating to the summer semester 2027 intake and later intakes, unless an exemption applies. The test itself is administered by g.a.s.t., not APS India, and the dMAT certificate becomes part of your APS documentation, with the result reflected on the APS certificate.

Five groups are outside the requirement under the current procedure, according to the dMAT page's FAQ: students applying for Bachelor's programmes in Germany; Bachelor students who have not yet completed at least 5 semesters of a 3-year programme or 7 semesters of a 4-year programme; PhD applicants; applicants whose previous degree is not in one of the selected fields; and participants in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programmes.

Check your case

Does the dMAT apply to you?

Our tool, built on the APS dMAT page (13 July 2026) and the official Affected Fields List v1.0. The official wording on your degree documents is decisive, and APS India makes the final classification.

If the checker cannot run in your browser, the table below gives the same answers for each degree.

Previous degree (official title)dMAT for a Master's from SS 2027?
B.E. / B.Tech in an Engineering branch (Mechanical, Civil, CSE, ECE, EEE, Chemical…)Yes, unless an exemption applies
B.Tech with a non-Engineering branch (e.g. standalone IT), or a "Technology" degree without "Engineering"Not automatically covered; covered only if APS classifies the official branch as Engineering
BCA, B.Sc Computer Science, B.Sc IT, B.Sc Data Science, AI or Cyber Security as a standalone fieldNot automatically covered
B.Com — the listed titles and specialisations awarded as Commerce, incl. B.Com Computer ApplicationsYes, unless an exemption applies
Accounting, Finance, Banking, Taxation, Insurance or Financial Markets degreeYes, unless an exemption applies
Economics — BA, B.Sc or Honours, Business / Financial / Applied EconomicsYes, unless an exemption applies
BBA, BBM, BMS, BBS, International Business, Marketing, HR, Operations, Supply Chain, Business AnalyticsYes, unless an exemption applies
Hotel, Hospitality, Tourism, Aviation, Hospital or Healthcare Management (BBA or otherwise), BHM, BHMCT, BTTMSeparate assessment by APS India
B.Sc in sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Maths…)Not automatically covered
BA in languages, humanities or social sciences other than EconomicsNot automatically covered

Engineering: the branch decides, not the letters "B.Tech"

The official list covers B.E., B.Tech or equivalent Indian Engineering degrees where the official branch or specialisation is an Engineering field. It names well over a hundred branches, from Aeronautical, Civil, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering to Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechatronics, Mining and Textile Engineering.

Its mixed-fields table is explicit about what this means for a B.Tech: it is covered only if the official branch is clearly Engineering, and "B.Tech alone is not used to include all Technology fields". A standalone Technology degree without an Engineering designation, or a B.Tech with a non-Engineering or unclear branch, is not automatically covered unless APS classifies it as Engineering from your documents.

Where other pages get this wrong

Not every tech graduate needs the dMAT.

Commonly published instead: Summaries often say the dMAT applies to "engineering and IT" or to "all B.Tech and computer graduates".

The official list says standalone Computer Science, BCA, Computer Applications, IT, AI, Data Science and Cyber Security are not automatically covered. Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Science and Engineering, and Information Technology and Engineering are covered.

DegreeOfficial list
B.Tech Computer Science and EngineeringCovered (Engineering)
B.E. Computer EngineeringCovered (Engineering)
B.Tech Information Technology and EngineeringCovered (Engineering)
B.Tech Information Technology (standalone)Not automatically covered
BCA / Bachelor of Computer ApplicationsNot automatically covered
B.Sc Computer Science, B.Sc IT, B.Sc Data ScienceNot automatically covered
B.Com Computer ApplicationsCovered (Commerce)

The same logic applies to biotechnology and food or textile degrees. Biotechnology Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering are covered; B.Sc Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology, Microbiology and Life Sciences are not automatically covered. Food Engineering and Textile Engineering are covered where the official title is clearly an Engineering degree; Food Technology, Food Processing Technology and Textile Technology are not automatically covered.

Commerce, accounting, finance and economics

This group is wide. The list includes many common B.Com titles — Honours, Accounting, Finance, Banking and Insurance, Taxation, e-Commerce, Marketing, Computer Applications and more — and degrees in Accounting, Auditing, Finance, Banking, Insurance, Taxation, Financial Markets, Financial Services and Investment Management. The list is guidance and not exhaustive: the official title on your degree and APS India's classification decide.

Economics is included in full, because, in the list's words, the field group is intended to cover economic sciences: B.A. Economics, B.Sc. Economics, Economics Honours, Applied, Business, Financial, Development and International Economics. A BA in Economics therefore needs the dMAT; a BA in History or English does not.

Business and management

BBA, BBM, BMS, BBS, Bachelor of Business Economics and Bachelor of International Business and Finance are on the list, along with Business Administration, Management Studies, International Business, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain, Retail Management, Entrepreneurship and Business Analytics.

Sector-specific management degrees are the exception. Hotel, Hospitality, Tourism, Aviation, Hospital and Healthcare Management — whether titled BBA or not, and including BHM, BHMCT and BTTM — are not classified by the word "Management" alone. The list puts them in a separate-assessment category: they may fall within the dMAT requirement if awarded as a Business or Management degree, and APS will separately check whether the degree title, duration and field meet Indian degree specifications and German recognition requirements. If you hold one of these degrees, check recognition before you pay anything.

The exemptions

You are exempt if…Note
You completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026Even if you shipped the documents after that date (dMAT page FAQ)
You shipped your complete APS documents before 29 June 2026Even if verification is still running; keep proof of shipment
You already completed the APS procedure and received the certificateFor that completed procedure only; a new application follows the rules then in force
You are in an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programmeSend the programme confirmation, with your group number, with your APS documents
Your intake is the winter semester 2026/27The first certificates were available only from 12 October 2026, so the rule starts with SS 2027

If the dMAT applies: timing

Two official pages give slightly different instructions here, and it is worth knowing both. The June 2026 leaflet says to take the dMAT before submitting your APS documents and to send the certificate with them. The dMAT page, last updated on 13 July 2026, adds that applicants for the summer semester 2027 intake or later may submit their APS documents before the dMAT certificate is available; APS may then begin verifying the other documents in advance, but it can issue the APS certificate only after the dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked against g.a.s.t.'s data. Only the dMAT certificate may follow; every other academic document must be in your first submission.

The first sitting in India was on 26 September 2026, with certificates online from 12 October 2026. Test centres listed by APS include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. Seats are booked through g.a.s.t. on a first come, first served basis, and APS India cannot reserve them, so check d-mat.de for the next date as soon as you know you are covered.

A low score does not automatically lead to refusal of the APS certificate, according to the APS FAQ, and a German university decides independently how to use the result. But a dMAT certificate cannot compensate for a degree or institution that is not formally recognised, and the official list itself says that it does not confirm recognition.

Do it in one evening

Page 3 of the kit walks through the dMAT rule degree by degree and shows how a dMAT applicant plans the courier date; the free planner flags the dMAT for your intake.

The free APS planner counts back from your university deadline to a target courier date. The APS Certificate Kit is seven printable pages built on the June 2026 leaflet: the checklist by degree, the dMAT rule, a deadline plan worked for three cases, five templates and a tracker. Frequently asked questions

Is the dMAT required for BCA students?

Not automatically. The official APS list says BCA and Computer Applications are not automatically covered unless APS classifies the official degree title as Engineering, Commerce/Finance/Economics or Business/Management.

Do B.Com graduates need the dMAT?

Yes, for a Master's from the summer semester 2027 intake onward, unless an exemption applies. The official list covers B.Com in all its common specialisations, including B.Com Computer Applications.

Is the dMAT required for B.Sc students?

Not for a B.Sc in the sciences or in Computer Science, IT or Data Science, which the list says are not automatically covered. A B.Sc in Economics is covered.

Does every B.Tech graduate need the dMAT?

No. A B.Tech is covered only if its official branch is an Engineering field. The list says B.Tech alone is not used to include all Technology fields.

Who is exempt from the dMAT?

Applicants who registered or shipped their complete APS documents before 29 June 2026, those who already hold an APS certificate for that procedure, and participants in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or partnership programmes. Bachelor's and PhD applicants are not affected.

Can I send my APS documents before the dMAT result?

Yes, for the summer 2027 intake or later, according to the APS dMAT page updated 13 July 2026. APS issues the APS certificate only after the dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.

How much does the dMAT cost?

The dMAT page gives the current fee as €150, charged by g.a.s.t. and payable during registration.
