Civil Service Fast Stream Practice Test 2027: Free, Scored, Explained

A free Fast Stream practice test: one work-based scenario and one case-study situation, scored out of 6 with your time and the reason behind every answer. Plus the official test format for 2027 entry.

Try our written practice

Our practice set: 12 work-based scenarios. Scenario 1 is free.

Each scenario is a short work situation with 4 possible actions. You rate each one on the official four-point scale, then see our rating and the reason behind it.

Scenario 1 of 12 · Tests: Working Together

The figure in the minister's box

You are a policy officer working on a joint briefing with a partner team. At noon, Grace, who leads the partner team, sent the finished briefing to the minister's private office. It goes into the minister's box at 5pm, ready for a radio interview tomorrow morning. At 1pm you notice that the paragraph on rural households, which you wrote, still says 120,000 households. Your team corrected that figure to 80,000 last week, and the version Grace sent was taken before the correction. Grace starts two weeks' leave at 2pm today. Her deputy, James, is in the office all afternoon and can send material to private office. Only that one paragraph is affected.

Your task: rate each of the 4 actions, from Counterproductive to Effective. Then see our rating and the reason for each.

Civil Service Fast Stream Practice Test 2027: Free, Scored, Explained

Checked 16 October 2026. Test format from the Civil Service Careers Fast Stream online-tests page for 2027 entry, read on 16 October 2026. The practice items and their answers are ProSyllabus's own, not official questions. Test formats can change between campaigns.

This page is a free Civil Service Fast Stream practice test you can take now, without signing in. It runs the two answer formats of the real online tests on two items: one work-based scenario, where you rate four actions on the official four-point scale, and one case-study situation, where you pick the most and the least effective response. When you finish you get a score out of 6, your time, which way your misses leaned, and the reason behind every answer. Below the test is what the official page says about the real tests for 2027 entry, read on 16 October 2026, and a plan for the 7 days you get to sit them. The practice items and their answers are ours, not official questions.

A note from us

Applying to the Fast Stream is a big step, and there is a lot to take in. We have tried to set out what is published as plainly as we can. Take it one section at a time, and come back whenever it helps.

Before you start

The real Fast Stream online tests are untimed. The clock in our practice test is your own time, so you can see your pace. It is not a limit.

The official page says: “The tests are untimed, so you can work at your own pace.” What is fixed is the deadline: “You will have 7 days to complete the tests from the moment they are made available.”

What the real Fast Stream online tests are

The official online-tests page for 2027 entry describes two tests. Everything in this table is from that page.

WhatWork-based scenariosCase study assessment
Number of testsOne of the two online testsThe other online test
What it measures (official wording)“interpersonal skills”“your decision-making and your ability to adapt to changing circumstances”
FormatShort videos of work situations; 12 scenariosAn imaginary role: 7 pieces of background information, then 24 situations
How you answerRate several possible actions: Counterproductive, Ineffective, Partially effective, EffectiveIn some situations pick the most and least effective responses; in others rate actions on the same four-point scale
Time limitNone: “The tests are untimed”None
Deadline7 days from when the tests are made availableThe same 7 days

Two details matter for practice. First, the real work-based scenarios are short videos; practice scenarios written as text, ours included, train the judgement but not the viewing. Second, the Case study assessment uses two answer types: in some situations you pick the most and least effective responses, in others you rate actions on the four-point scale. Our free item is a most-and-least situation, and our full case study uses that answer type only.

The four-point scale, word for word

Both tests use the same four ratings. The descriptions are the official page’s wording (it starts each one in lower case); learning them exactly is the cheapest preparation there is.

RatingOfficial description
Counterproductivean unacceptable action that would make the problem worse
Ineffectivea poor action that would not help
Partially effectivea useful action that would be of some help
Effectivea good action that would help resolve the situation

Our reading of the scale: the line between Counterproductive and Ineffective is harm. An action that makes things worse is Counterproductive; one that simply does not help is Ineffective. The line between Partially effective and Effective is whether the action would help resolve the situation or would only be of some help. Most misses in practice come from those two boundaries.

Independent practice material. Not written or endorsed by the Civil Service; the real tests use video and no answer key is published beyond the one worked example. For 2027 entry the real Case Study mixes two answer types; this set practises both: four-point ratings in the scenarios, most and least effective in the case study.

How to use your score

The practice test gives you three numbers: matches on the four ratings, matches on the most and least pair, and your time. Treat them as a diagnosis, not a prediction.

What you seeWhat it tells you (our reading)
Score out of 6How often your judgement matched our reasoned answers on these two items. Two items are a small sample: use it to find a pattern, not to forecast a result.
Your misses leaned generousYou rated some actions higher than our reading. A common cause is rewarding an action for good intentions when it leaves the problem unsolved.
Your misses leaned harshYou rated some actions lower than our reading. A common cause is marking down a useful action because it is not the best one; several actions can share a rating.
Your timeYour pace on these items. The real tests have no time limit, so speed is not scored by us and, as far as the official page says, not limited there either.

The official page does not explain how the real tests are marked and gives no pass mark, and it says the feedback you receive “does not indicate whether you will progress to the next stage, as the process is highly competitive.” We found no official source that turns a practice score into a pass probability, so we do not offer one.

A 7-day plan for the real tests

You may wait a few days after applying before the tests become available; the official page says this “is normal, especially during busy periods”. The 7 days start when they do. This plan is our advice, built around that window.

Your 7-day test window: deadline and a dated plan

Enter the date your online tests became available (the email says when; your applicant homepage shows the deadline). This counts the 7 days the official page gives you and lays our plan over them. The arithmetic and the plan are ours; your homepage is the authority on the exact deadline.

“You will have 7 days to complete the tests from the moment they are made available.” Civil Service Careers, read 16 October 2026. If your homepage shows a different deadline, use that.

The same plan as a table, for readers whose page does not run the planner.

DayWhat to do (our advice)
Before you applyTake the free practice test above once, cold. Note your score and which way your misses leaned.
Day 1 of the 7Read the official example question and its answer. Re-read the four rating descriptions until you can say them without looking.
Days 2–3Practise more work-based scenarios. After each one, read why every action sits where it does, not only whether you matched.
Day 4Practise the case study format: read the background first, then answer situations in order, as the official test is “an evolving scenario”.
Days 5–6Sit the real Work-based scenarios and Case study assessment in a quiet slot. They are untimed: read every action fully.
Day 7A spare day. The deadline is 7 days from when the tests become available, and your applicant homepage shows it.

Reading an action the way the scale does

A habit that helps on both tests, and our advice rather than official guidance: before choosing a rating, ask two questions of each action in turn. Does it make the situation worse for anyone, including the public, a colleague or the department? If yes, it is a candidate for Counterproductive. If not, would it help resolve the situation, or only be of some help? That separates Effective from Partially effective. An action that changes nothing is Ineffective. Rate each action on its own: the official page asks you to rate “several possible actions”, not to rank them, so in our reading two actions can share a rating.

In the case study the question can change. In some situations you choose the most and least effective responses; in others you rate actions on the same four-point scale, in a story that builds as you go. Keep the background in mind: a response that ignores a fact you were given earlier is usually the weakest one.

After the tests

The official page says results “should be available in December 2026” and that you will be emailed when they are released. Everyone gets feedback, “regardless of whether you are successful”, and the page says it will reflect your individual performance and give tips to develop it. Our guide to the feedback report explains what is in it.

What we could not find

Not on the official page we read

  • How the real tests are marked, or how much each test counts.
  • A pass mark or a score that guarantees progress.
  • An official full-length practice test. The page shows an example question and answer.
  • How long most candidates take. The page says only that the tests are untimed.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Civil Service Fast Stream practice test?

Yes: the practice test on this page is free, needs no sign-in and scores you out of 6 on one work-based scenario and one case-study situation, with every answer explained. The official online-tests page also shows an example question and answer. The practice items here are ours, not official questions.

Are the Fast Stream online tests timed?

No. The official page says the tests are untimed, so you can work at your own pace. You have 7 days to complete them from the moment they are made available.

How many questions are in the Fast Stream online tests?

The official page describes 12 work-based scenarios, each with several actions to rate, and a case study with 7 pieces of background information followed by 24 situations.

What is the pass mark for the Fast Stream online tests?

The official online-tests page gives none, and we found none published elsewhere. The page says the feedback you receive does not indicate whether you will progress, as the process is highly competitive.

Does a good practice score mean I will pass?

No. A practice score shows how your judgement matched our reasoned answers on a few items. The official page does not explain how the real tests are marked, so we do not treat a practice score as a prediction.

What is the difference between the Work-based scenarios and the Case study assessment?

The work-based scenarios are short videos where you rate actions on a four-point scale. The case study is an evolving scenario in an imaginary role: you read 7 pieces of background, then respond to 24 situations, sometimes picking the most and least effective response and sometimes rating actions.

When are the Fast Stream online test results released?

For 2027 entry the official page says results should be available in December 2026, and you will be emailed when they are released.

Good luck from all of us

Whatever stage you are at, getting this far takes real effort, and that is worth being proud of. Prepare at a pace that works for you, check the official Civil Service Careers pages for anything that decides your application, and look after yourself along the way. We are wishing you every success.

And make us lose the good we oft might win
