A mailbox nobody owns

You are an administrative officer in a pensions enquiry team. Four of you answer a shared mailbox, and nobody has been given the job of sorting it. This morning it holds 140 unanswered emails. The oldest is 12 working days old, and the team's published standard is a reply within 10 working days. Your team leader, Asha, is on a training course until tomorrow but is reading her messages.

Independent practice material. Not written or endorsed by the Civil Service. Ratings are our reading of the scale definitions on GOV.UK and the Civil Service Code; no official key exists. The real test also has a self-assessment section (15% of the score), may use video, and reports a percentile, not a mark.

Before you buy

What do I get?

12 scenarios (48 actions to rate) across 4 Civil Service behaviours: Managing a Quality Service, Delivering at Pace, Working Together, and Communicating and Influencing. After each scenario you see our rating and the reason for it, your running score, and whether your ratings lean generous or harsh against ours.

Is this the real test format?

The rating task is: GOV.UK's guidance says each scenario asks you to rate four actions as Counterproductive, Ineffective, Fairly Effective or Effective, with three scenarios for each behaviour, and that the test is not timed. The real test also opens with a self-assessment section worth 15% of the score, shows only scenarios for your job level, and may present them as video. This set is text only and does not include the self-assessment, which has no right answers to practise.

Are these the real test questions?

No. The real items are not published and no answers to them are released. These are original practice items written to the published scale definitions. Your real result is a percentile against other applicants, so no practice score predicts it.

Who decided the ratings?

We wrote each rating against the scale definitions on GOV.UK and the Civil Service Code, and had every item reviewed independently, without the key, before release; an action went in only when the independent ratings matched ours. They are our reading, not an official key; none exists.

I am applying to the Fast Stream. Is this the right set?

The Fast Stream uses its own online tests, with a different scale wording and a case study. Use our Fast Stream practice tests for those.
