Checked 29 September 2026. From the JENPAS(UG)-2026 and 2025 information bulletins and WBJEEB's final answer keys for 2025 and 2026. The 2027 bulletin is not out; WBJEEB changed Paper-I in 2026 and can change it again.
JENPAS(UG) is two pen-and-paper OMR tests on one day. Paper-I ranks candidates for B.Sc Nursing and every allied health course except BHA; Paper-II ranks them for the Bachelor of Hospital Administration only. Each paper is 100 questions for 115 marks in 90 minutes, and each mixes two kinds of question with very different rules: single-answer questions with negative marking, and multi-answer questions with partial credit and no negative marking. This guide sets out the 2026 pattern — the latest official one — and what it means for how you answer.
JENPAS(UG)-2026 information bulletin.
Where other pages get this wrong
JENPAS UG has negative marking: a wrong Category-1 answer costs a quarter mark.
Commonly published instead: "No negative marking" and a paper with General Awareness and a logical-reasoning section.
The 2026 bulletin sets −¼ for every wrong or multiple-marked Category-1 answer. Paper-I in 2026 has Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Basic English and Health Aptitude; General Knowledge and Logical Reasoning are in Paper-II, for BHA.
Paper-I: nursing and allied courses
| Section | Category-1 questions (1 mark) | Category-2 questions (2 marks) | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 15 | 5 | 20 | 25 |
| Chemistry | 15 | 5 | 20 | 25 |
| Biology | 15 | 5 | 20 | 25 |
| Basic English | 20 | — | 20 | 20 |
| Health Aptitude | 20 | — | 20 | 20 |
| Total | 85 | 15 | 100 | 115 |
Physics, Chemistry and Biology are set at the Class 11–12 level. All 15 Category-2 questions sit in the three science sections, so the sciences carry 75 of the 115 marks. Questions come in English and Bengali, except Basic English.
Paper-II: BHA only
| Section | Category-1 questions (1 mark) | Category-2 questions (2 marks) | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physical Science | 25 | 5 | 30 | 35 |
| Mathematics | 10 | 5 | 15 | 20 |
| General Knowledge | 10 | 5 | 15 | 20 |
| Basic English | 20 | — | 20 | 20 |
| Logical Reasoning | 20 | — | 20 | 20 |
| Total | 85 | 15 | 100 | 115 |
Paper-II's Physical Science and Mathematics are at Class 10 level; General Knowledge, English and Logical Reasoning are at Class 12 level. A candidate can sit one paper or both — in 2026 the fee was Rs 500 for one paper and Rs 800 for both (Rs 400 and Rs 650 for SC, ST, OBC and EWS). BHA seats are allotted only on the BHA Merit Rank from Paper-II.
| Application fee 2026 | General | SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, EWS |
|---|---|---|
| One paper | Rs 500 | Rs 400 |
| Both papers | Rs 800 | Rs 650 |
| PwD | 40% concession | 40% concession |
What changed in 2026: Health Aptitude replaced Logical Reasoning in Paper-I
| 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | Paper-I section |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 Q each, 25 marks each | 20 Q each, 25 marks each | 20 Q each, 25 marks each | Physics, Chemistry, Biology |
| 20 Q, 20 marks | 20 Q, 20 marks | 20 Q, 20 marks | Basic English |
| Logical Reasoning, 20 Q, 20 marks | Logical Reasoning, 20 Q, 20 marks | Health Aptitude, 20 Q, 20 marks | Fifth section |
The Health Aptitude syllabus was posted in April 2026, after applications opened. It has nine units, from hygiene and common diseases to national health programmes and disaster management, and no reasoning unit. Our Health Aptitude guide lists them with a study plan. Pages still describing a Paper-I logical-reasoning section are describing 2025.
Category-1: one correct option, negative marking
| Your response | Marks |
|---|---|
| The correct option | +1 |
| A wrong option | −¼ |
| Two or more options (even if one is right) | −¼ |
| Left blank | 0 |
Category-2: one or more correct options, partial credit
| Your response | Marks |
|---|---|
| All the correct options and nothing else | +2 |
| Any wrong option marked, with or without correct ones | 0 |
| Some correct options, no wrong option | 2 × (correct marked ÷ correct in key) |
| Left blank | 0 |
Worked examples of that formula, our arithmetic:
| Key has | You mark | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 correct option | that option | 2 |
| 2 correct options | both | 2 |
| 2 correct options | one of them only | 1 |
| 2 correct options | one right and one wrong | 0 |
| 3 correct options | two of them only | 1.33 |
| 3 correct options | one of them only | 0.67 |
The OMR is marked in blue or black ballpoint and cannot be changed, so there is no second chance to remove an option once darkened.
What the answer keys show about Category-2
The bulletin says only "one or more" options are correct. The final keys tell you how many actually were. We counted them in Set A of the official final keys, taking questions 16–20, 36–40 and 56–60 as Paper-I's Category-2 block (15 questions, three sections of 20 with the 2-mark questions last; that placement is our inference from the section sizes, which the keys confirm by giving several options for exactly those questions).
| Paper | One correct option | Two correct options | Three correct options | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Paper-I | 0 | 13 | 2 | 15 |
| 2025 Paper-I | 4 | 9 | 2 | 15 |
| 2026 Paper-II | 5 | 6 | 4 | 15 |
| Note | Detail |
|---|---|
| 2025 Paper-I | Q87 withdrawn in the final key |
| 2026 Paper-I | Three correct options: Q57 and Q60 |
In 2026 not a single Paper-I Category-2 question had only one correct answer, and 13 of 15 had exactly two. That matters: a student who habitually marks one option in Category-2 would have earned at most 1 mark per question in 2026. It is one year's key, not a rule — 2025 had four single-answer Category-2 questions — but it argues for looking hard for a second correct option before you stop. One 2025 Paper-I question (Q87) was withdrawn in the final key and marks were awarded to everyone who appeared.
When to guess: the arithmetic
These are expected marks per question, our arithmetic from the marking rules. They assume each remaining option is equally likely, which is rarely true.
| Situation | Expected marks | How |
|---|---|---|
| Category-1, pure guess among 4 | +0.0625 | ¼ × 1 − ¾ × ¼ |
| Category-1, one option ruled out (1 of 3) | +0.1667 | ⅓ × 1 − ⅔ × ¼ |
| Category-1, two ruled out (1 of 2) | +0.375 | ½ × 1 − ½ × ¼ |
| Category-2, key has 2 correct, you are sure of one | 1 if you stop; 2p if you add a second option you think is right with probability p | add it only if p is above 0.5 |
On expected marks alone, guessing in Category-1 is slightly positive. But the first tie-breaker is "less negative marks in total", and ranks near the top are packed together. A blind guess that is wrong costs you a quarter mark and pushes you behind everyone on the same score who left it blank. Guess when you have ruled out at least one option; leave pure guesses alone.
Tie-breaking rules
| Order | Paper-I | Paper-II |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fewer negative marks in total | Fewer negative marks in total |
| 2 | More positive marks in Biology | More positive marks in Physical Science |
| 3 | More positive marks in Chemistry | More positive marks in English |
| 4 | More positive marks in Physics | More positive marks in Logical Reasoning |
| 5 | More positive marks in English | Physical Science and English together |
| 6 | Biology and Chemistry together | Physical Science and Logical Reasoning together |
| 7 | Biology and Physics together | Fewer negatives in Physical Science and English |
| 8 | Fewer negatives in Biology and Chemistry | Fewer negatives in Physical Science and Logical Reasoning |
| 9 | Fewer negatives in Biology and Physics | Older candidate, then earlier application number |
| 10 | Older candidate, then earlier application number | — |
After the exam: keys, OMR and rank card
In 2026 the provisional key came out on 23.06.2026 with a challenge window to 25.06.2026, the machine-read OMR responses were published under a notice of 09.07.2026, and the final key notice and the result followed on 24.07.2026. A challenge costs Rs 500 per question, for keys and for OMR readings alike. The Board does not publish a rank list; you download your own rank card. The bulletin also warns that not every candidate may be ranked, because the Board "will decide a cut-off rank and/or a cut-off score". A calculation sheet of your score costs Rs 500 by demand draft.

The 2027 dates are not announced. In 2024 and 2026 the bulletin came in March and the exam in June; 2025 ran late, with the exam in October. If 2027 follows 2024 and 2026, expect applications around March–April and the exam around June 2027 — that is our inference, not a WBJEEB date.
Practise it, don't just read it
Negative marking and partial credit reward accuracy over volume. Time yourself on a ten-question quiz, then check how many of your wrong answers were guesses.
The ProSyllabus JENPAS-UG library has five topic quizzes of ten questions each: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany), Biology (Zoology) and Basic English and Health Aptitude. Every question comes with an explanation.
