Checked 29 September 2026. From the JENPAS(UG)-2026 and ANM(R) & GNM-2026 information bulletins and WBJEEB's 2026 counselling notices. Both exams are annual; the 2027 bulletins are not out.
WBJEEB runs two separate entrance exams for nursing in West Bengal, a week apart and easily confused. JENPAS(UG) leads to B.Sc Nursing and 12 other degree courses. The ANM(R) & GNM exam leads to the two-year Auxiliary Nursing & Midwifery (Revised) course and the three-year General Nursing & Midwifery course. They have different papers, different fees, different residence rules and different gender rules. This guide puts the two 2026 bulletins side by side so you can decide which to sit — or whether to sit both.
JENPAS(UG)-2026 and ANM(R) & GNM-2026 bulletins.
The two exams side by side
| Feature | JENPAS(UG) 2026 | ANM(R) & GNM 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Leads to | B.Sc Nursing, 11 allied health degrees, BHA | ANM(R), 2 years; GNM, 3 years |
| Exam date and time | Sunday 07.06.2026; Paper-I 11:00–12:30, Paper-II 14:00–15:30 | Sunday 14.06.2026, 12:00–13:30 |
| Papers | Paper-I (all but BHA), Paper-II (BHA) | One paper; separate ANM(R) and GNM ranks |
| Questions and marks | 100 Q, 115 marks per paper | 100 Q, 115 marks |
| Level | Paper-I sciences at Class 11–12 | Sciences and Mathematics at Class 10; English, GK, reasoning at Class 12 |
| Marking | Category-1 +1/−¼; Category-2 up to 2, no negative | The same two categories, same rules |
| Application fee | Rs 500 one paper, Rs 800 both; Rs 400 / Rs 650 for SC, ST, OBC, EWS | Rs 400; Rs 300 for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, EWS and orphan candidates |
Some pages give only the Rs 300 ANM & GNM fee. The bulletin charges Rs 300 to SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, EWS and orphan candidates and Rs 400 to everyone else.
ANM(R) & GNM 2026: the paper
| Section | Category-1 questions | Category-2 questions | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Life Science | 30 | 10 | 40 | 50 |
| Physical Science | 15 | 5 | 20 | 25 |
| Basic English | 15 | — | 15 | 15 |
| Mathematics | 10 | — | 10 | 10 |
| General Knowledge | 10 | — | 10 | 10 |
| Logical Reasoning | 5 | — | 5 | 5 |
| Total | 85 | 15 | 100 | 115 |
JENPAS(UG) 2026 Paper-I: the paper
| Section | Category-1 questions | Category-2 questions | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 15 | 5 | 20 | 25 |
| Chemistry | 15 | 5 | 20 | 25 |
| Biology | 15 | 5 | 20 | 25 |
| Basic English | 20 | — | 20 | 20 |
| Health Aptitude | 20 | — | 20 | 20 |
| Total | 85 | 15 | 100 | 115 |
The ANM & GNM paper is weighted heavily to Life Science (50 of 115 marks) at Class 10 level, with Mathematics and General Knowledge that JENPAS Paper-I does not have. JENPAS Paper-I spreads 75 marks evenly over Class 11–12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology and adds Health Aptitude. A student preparing for JENPAS is well covered for the ANM & GNM science sections; the reverse is not true. What JENPAS preparation does not cover is the ANM & GNM Mathematics and General Knowledge sections, 20 marks between them, and those need their own revision — Class 10 arithmetic and algebra for Mathematics, and Class 12-level current and static general knowledge. The two exams were a week apart in 2026, so sitting both is practical.
Eligibility side by side
| Rule | JENPAS(UG) B.Sc Nursing | ANM(R) | GNM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gender | Government colleges women only; a few private colleges for men | Women only | Women and men; two government institutions and a few private ones for men |
| Residence | Domicile: 10 years in West Bengal to 31.12.2025, OR a parent who is a permanent resident | Permanent resident of West Bengal uninterruptedly for at least the last 10 years till 31.12.2025 | Same as ANM(R) |
| Language | Not required | Read, write and speak Bengali and/or Nepali | Same as ANM(R) |
| Class 12 subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English passed | Any stream, English passed; health-care vocational streams qualify | Same as ANM(R) |
| Class 12 marks | 45% in P, C, B (40% SC, ST, OBC, PwD) | 40% aggregate; 5% of total marks relaxed for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B | Same as ANM(R) |
| Age | At least 17 on 31.12.2026; no upper limit | At least 17 on 31.12.2026; no upper limit | Same |
The residence rule is the sharpest difference. JENPAS accepts a candidate whose parent is a permanent resident even if the candidate has not lived in the state for ten years; the ANM & GNM bulletin asks for ten years of uninterrupted permanent residence and has no parental alternative. The ANM & GNM route is also the only one open to a Class 12 Arts or Commerce student who wants to nurse — JENPAS nursing needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology — and GNM is the only government route for men.
On the 40% ANM & GNM aggregate, "5% of total marks is relaxed" reads as 35% for SC, ST and OBC candidates; that is our reading of the bulletin's wording.
How ties are broken in the ANM & GNM exam
Both exams start with the same rule — fewer negative marks in total ranks higher — and then look at the heaviest science section. After that they differ, because the papers differ.
| Order | JENPAS(UG) Paper-I | ANM(R) & GNM |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fewer negative marks in total | Fewer negative marks in total |
| 2 | More positive marks in Biology | More positive marks in Life Science |
| 3 | More positive marks in Chemistry | More positive marks in Physical Science |
| 4 | More positive marks in Physics | More positive marks in Basic English |
| 5 | More positive marks in English | More positive marks in Mathematics, then General Knowledge, then Logical Reasoning |
| Then | Section combinations, fewer negatives in combinations, older candidate, earlier application | Section combinations, fewer negatives in combinations, older candidate, earlier application |
The ANM & GNM exam publishes two separate General Merit Ranks from the one paper — one for ANM(R), one for GNM — and, like JENPAS, allots seats on the General Merit Rank only; category ranks are for information. Neither exam publishes a rank list; each candidate downloads a rank card.
Things only the ANM & GNM bulletin has
| Provision | ANM(R) & GNM 2026 | JENPAS(UG) 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Vocational streams | CBSE Health Care Science; West Bengal HS (Vocational) Community Healthcare subjects from 2023, or the older Home Science combination | Not accepted for nursing (needs Physics, Chemistry, Biology) |
| Special quotas | Civil Defence quota and Orphanage and inmate-ship quota (at least 5 years in a recognised home) | Not in the bulletin |
| Stipend | ANM(R) trainees in government institutes: Rs 500 a month (or as per the existing rule) for 2 years | Not in the bulletin |
| Employment | The bulletin says employment after training is not an obligation of the state government | Not addressed |
| Seat matrix | Declared by the state health department before counselling; the previous year's is on the Board's website | Declared before counselling; 13,265 seats in 2026 |
The stipend line is worth reading carefully: it applies to ANM(R) in government institutes, it is stated "as per the existing Govt. Rule", and it says nothing about GNM. An admitted candidate who fails to join training on the notified date loses the seat to the next candidate, with no individual reminder — the bulletin puts the burden of following the institute's notices on the student.
Degree or diploma
What you are choosing between is a degree (B.Sc Nursing) and a diploma (GNM, three years) or a shorter auxiliary course (ANM(R), two years). The bulletins do not compare careers, and we do not quote salaries or promotion rules here because none of our sources states them. What the documents do show is the entry bar: B.Sc Nursing in a government college needed a 2026 General Merit Rank of 3,069 or better even in the last college; private nursing seats went as deep as rank 25,385.
| Route | Seats in 2026 | Deepest 2026 Round-1 open close |
|---|---|---|
| B.Sc Nursing, government (JENPAS) | 1,715 in 25 colleges | 3,069 |
| B.Sc Nursing, private (JENPAS) | 7,145 | 25,385 |
| ANM(R) and GNM | Declared before counselling; not in the bulletin | Not compared here |

Dates to plan around
| Event | JENPAS(UG) 2026 | ANM(R) & GNM 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Bulletin | 23.03.2026 | 19.03.2026 |
| Exam | 07.06.2026 | 14.06.2026 |

The 2027 bulletins are not out. In 2026 both were released in March for June exams; if that repeats, expect both applications around March–April 2027 — our inference, not a WBJEEB date.
Practise it, don't just read it
If you sit both exams, the science you revise for JENPAS Paper-I does double duty. The Biology (Botany) and Biology (Zoology) quizzes cover the Life Science that carries 50 marks in ANM & GNM.
The ProSyllabus JENPAS-UG library has five topic quizzes of ten questions each: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany), Biology (Zoology) and Basic English and Health Aptitude. Every question comes with an explanation.
