View Complete ArticleChecked 25 September 2026. From NIC’s CCMT 2026 and 2025 opening/closing GATE score data, the CCMT 2026 brochure and schedule, and IIT cut-off PDFs. 2027 closing scores will differ. COAP 2026’s own site could not be reached; round dates are from IIT Roorkee’s dated offer lists.
For an M.Tech at an NIT, the number that matters is the closing GATE score in CCMT, the centralised counselling. NIC publishes the opening and closing score for every programme, category and round. We extracted the 2026 and 2025 figures for every NIT programme that admits GATE EE — Power Systems, Power Electronics, drives, electric vehicles, smart grids — and added the cut-offs the IITs themselves published. This guide explains what the numbers mean and lets you check which programmes a given score cleared.

NIT Trichy’s EE M.Tech programmes closed at GATE scores of 584 (Power Electronics) and 499 (Power Systems) for OPEN in CCMT 2026 Round 1.
Commonly published instead: “NIT Trichy admits with a GATE score of 800 and above for EE.”
NIC’s official CCMT 2026 opening/closing score data. Higher scores go to IITs through COAP; NIT closing scores for EE programmes sit mostly between about 350 and 600.

NIC CCMT 2025 and 2026 data.
Closing scores moved by a few points to about 18 between years, in both directions. Power Electronics consistently closed higher than Power Systems at the same institute — by 60–90 points at NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal and NIT Surathkal — which says more about demand than difficulty. For planning, the practical reading is: a GATE EE score around 500 opened Round-1 seats at several top NITs in 2026; around 400, a wide range of NIT programmes in later rounds.
| IIT and programme | GEN | EWS | OBC-NCL | SC | ST |

IIT Madras M.Tech 2026 cut-off PDF (12.08.2026); IIT Bombay minimum GATE cut-off 2026-27; IIT Palakkad M.Tech GATE cut-off (COAP rounds) 2026-27.
Read the IIT figures carefully. IIT Madras’s figures are the GATE scores at which it made offers; IIT Madras’s Power Systems & Power Electronics closed at 730 for GEN in 2026, against 657 in 2025. IIT Bombay’s 510 is a minimum to be considered for its written test and interview, not a closing score — its 2026 shortlist table shows up to 900 candidates called for the EE group that admits IN, EE and EC graduates. IIT Kanpur’s EE department publishes its selection rules but no numbers. For the other IITs, 2026 EE figures were not found. COAP 2026 — the common offer portal for IIT M.Tech seats — ran from 11 May to a Round 11 “Special Round” on 18 July 2026, according to IIT Roorkee’s dated offer lists (the COAP site itself could not be reached).

Put the M.Tech numbers next to the GATE score tables (see our marks-vs-score guide). On the 2026 field, a score of 500 was roughly 40 marks and a rank around 2,500; 600 was roughly 49 marks and a rank around 900; 730 was about 61 marks and a rank in the low 200s. These conversions are our approximations from the official score formula and mark distribution (see our marks-vs-score guide). So an IIT Madras EE seat in 2026 needed a top-250 performance, a Round-1 seat in Power Electronics at the leading NITs a top-1,000 one, and a wide choice of NIT programmes a top-3,000 one. Your GATE score is valid for three years, and CCMT accepts scores from the current and two previous years.
Practise it, don't just read it
Moving from a score of 450 to 550 on the 2026 field is about eight marks. The ProSyllabus topic quizzes are a quick way to find which EE sections those marks should come from.
The ProSyllabus GATE EE library has topic quizzes on Fourier series and transforms, transfer functions and block diagrams, state space, the Nyquist criterion, transformers, synchronous machines, rectifiers, nodal and mesh analysis, transients, two-port networks, load flow and power system protection — the first quiz is free.
OPEN closed at 499 in Round 1 and 492 by Round 2 (GATE score).
OPEN closed at 584 in Round 1 and 561 in Round 3.
In CCMT 2026, OPEN closing scores for EE programmes ranged from about 357 to 584 in the regular rounds.
730 for GEN in Power Systems & Power Electronics; 751 for Electric Vehicles; 718 for Control and Optimization.
A minimum of 510 (GN/EWS), 459 (OBC-NC) and 340 (SC/ST) to be considered, in 2026 and 2025; selection is by written test and interview.
2024, 2025 or 2026 for CCMT 2026.
60% or 6.5 CGPA for GEN, EWS and OBC; 55% or 6.0 for SC, ST and PwD.
Three regular rounds, two special rounds and a National Spot Round.
For the NIT EE programmes shown, by a few to about 18 points between 2025 and 2026.
₹30,000 (₹10,000 for SC, ST and PwD) in 2026.
At the same NIT it closed 60–90 points higher in 2026, reflecting demand.
