View Complete ArticleChecked 25 September 2026. From the GATE 2023–2026 statistical reports and cut-off pages and the GATE 2027 brochure (formula unchanged). The 2027 figures depend on the 2027 field and are not known until 19 March 2027.
Your GATE EE result has three numbers — marks out of 100, a score out of 1000 and an All India Rank — and the relationship between them changes every year. The same 50 marks was worth a score of about 776 in 2023 and about 607 in 2026, because the toppers scored higher. This guide gives the official formula, the real EE figures for four years, the official score-band rank tables, and a calculator that applies each year’s numbers to your target marks.

Where other pages get this wrong
EE’s GEN qualifying marks were 25 (2023), 25.7 (2024), 25 (2025) and 27.7 (2026).
Commonly published instead: “25 marks every year for four consecutive years” (2022–2025), a 2025 cut-off of “27.5 / 25 / 20”, or a 2024 cut-off of “26.0 / 23.5 / 17.6”.
The official GATE statistical reports and cut-off pages give 25 / 22.5 / 16.6 for 2025 and 25.7 / 23.1 / 17.1 for 2024; 2026 rose to 27.7 / 24.9 / 18.4.
GATE converts marks (M) to a score with Score = Sq + (St − Sq) × (M − Mq) / (M̄t − Mq), where Sq = 350 and St = 900. Mq is the GEN qualifying mark for the paper and M̄t is the mean mark of the top 0.1% of candidates (or the top 10, whichever is larger). The qualifying mark itself is max(25, min(40, μ + σ)) — the mean plus one standard deviation of the paper, never below 25 or above 40. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need 0.9 × the GEN mark, and SC, ST and PwD candidates two-thirds of it. The 2027 brochure keeps the formula unchanged.
The published figures follow the rule exactly (our check): in 2026, μ + σ = 16.62 + 11.16 = 27.78, published as 27.7; in 2024, 16.18 + 9.55 = 25.73 → 25.7; in 2025, 14.3 + 10.69 = 24.99 and in 2023, 10.90 + 9.09 = 19.99, both below 25, so the floor of 25 applied. Note that the published qualifying marks are truncated to one decimal (27.78 appears as 27.7), not rounded.

Rank ranges of qualified EE candidates by score band, Table 10 of each statistical report.
GATE publishes these score-band tables and a distribution of raw marks, not a mark-by-mark rank list, so any “marks vs rank” table — including ours — is derived. The two official tables agree well: in 2026, 50 marks converts to a score of about 607, whose band (600–700) covers ranks 288–871, and the marks table shows 870 candidates at 50 or above.

GATE 2026 Statistical and Performance Report, appeared-marks table.
Two lessons follow. Compare scores or ranks across years, never raw marks — 50 marks in 2023 was a top-110 performance, in 2026 a top-870 one. And the field is steep: in 2026, 40 marks put you roughly in the top 2,760 of 65,801, 50 marks in the top 870 and 60 marks in the top 230. Those anchors are what PSU shortlists and IIT cut-offs are really asking for (see our PSU and M.Tech guides).
Clearing the qualifying mark makes you GATE-qualified: in 2026, 13,726 of 65,801 EE candidates (20.9%) did so. It is a floor, not a target. The users of GATE scores set their own, much higher bars — NPCIL shortlisted UR candidates in 2026 at a GATE score of 630 (its notice of 19 May 2026), POWERGRID shortlisted GATE 2025 UR candidates at 51 normalised marks (its Notice 5 of 4 November 2025), and IIT Madras made Power Systems & Power Electronics offers at 730 for GEN (its 2026 cut-off PDF) — details in our PSU and M.Tech guides. Qualifying also depends on category: an SC, ST or PwD candidate qualified in 2026 with 18.4 marks, an OBC-NCL or EWS candidate with 24.9. The qualified share itself has swung from 11.2% in 2023 to 21.1% in 2024, because the qualifying mark is tied to the mean and spread of each year’s paper.

Set your target as a score or rank, then convert it back to marks for the 2026 field with the calculator above. Topic quizzes help find where the extra 5–10 marks will come from.
The ProSyllabus GATE EE library has topic quizzes on Fourier series and transforms, transfer functions and block diagrams, state space, the Nyquist criterion, transformers, synchronous machines, rectifiers, nodal and mesh analysis, transients, two-port networks, load flow and power system protection — the first quiz is free.
27.7 for GEN, 24.9 for OBC-NCL and EWS, and 18.4 for SC, ST and PwD.
25 for GEN, 22.5 for OBC-NCL and EWS, and 16.6 for SC, ST and PwD.
No — it was 25.7 in 2024 and 27.7 in 2026. The rule is the mean plus one standard deviation, with a floor of 25.
In 2026, about 870 candidates scored 50 or more; in 2025 about 785; in 2024 about 450.
About 607 on the 2026 field, 645 on 2025 and 670 on 2024 (our arithmetic from the official formula).
350 + 550 × (marks − qualifying marks) ÷ (M̄t − qualifying marks), capped at 1000.
92 out of 100.
65,801, of whom 13,726 qualified.
Normalisation applies only to multi-session papers; EE was single-session in 2024–2026.
Because the topper average (M̄t) rose, from 57.24 in 2023 to 75.45 in 2026.
The official 2022 report could not be retrieved, and reported figures conflict, so we do not publish them.
It depends on the goal: our PSU and M.Tech guides show the scores and ranks recent recruitments and NIT programmes actually closed at.
