Chapter 1: Introduction
Summary
Economics begins with a simple fact: human wants are unlimited but resources are scarce. Because every resource has alternative uses, choosing to make one thing means giving up another, and the value of the best forgone alternative is its opportunity cost. Every economy must therefore answer three central problems — what to produce and in what quantities, how to produce (which technology and mix of inputs), and for whom to produce (how the output is distributed). The production possibility frontier (PPF) shows the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can make when resources are fully and efficiently used; points inside it signal idle or wasted resources, while its negative slope captures opportunity cost. Societies organise economic activity in different ways: a centrally planned economy lets the government decide allocation and distribution, a market economy relies on free interaction and price signals, and most real economies are mixed. Economists also distinguish positive economics (how mechanisms actually work) from normative economics (whether outcomes are desirable), and divide the subject into microeconomics, which studies individual consumers and firms in particular markets, and macroeconomics, which studies aggregates like total output, employment and the general price level.
