In a right triangle, sin θ is defined as:

Summary

Trigonometry studies the relationships between the angles and sides of right-angled triangles. The chapter defines the trigonometric ratios — sine, cosine, tangent and their reciprocals — for an acute angle, and gives their values for the standard angles \(0^\circ, 30^\circ, 45^\circ, 60^\circ\) and \(90^\circ\). It also establishes fundamental trigonometric identities such as \(\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1\), which are used to simplify expressions and prove results. These ratios and identities are the basis for solving a wide range of measurement problems.

Key terms

Trigonometric ratios
\(\sin,\ \cos,\ \tan\) and their reciprocals for an acute angle.
Identity \(\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1\)
A fundamental relation true for all angles.
Standard angles
Angles \(0^\circ, 30^\circ, 45^\circ, 60^\circ, 90^\circ\) with known ratio values.
Reciprocal ratios
\(\operatorname{cosec},\ \sec\) and \(\cot\) — reciprocals of \(\sin,\ \cos\) and \(\tan\).
