Extra questions & answers
Why is the Mahabharata an important source for social history?
It is a vast epic depicting many social groups and situations and laying down norms of behaviour, so it reveals attitudes about kinship, caste, class and gender over a long period.
What is patriliny and why did it matter to ruling families?
Patriliny traces descent through the father; it mattered because succession to thrones and inheritance of property usually passed from father to son.
What were the rules of marriage in Brahmanical texts?
Texts prescribed endogamy (marriage within a group), exogamy (marrying outside the gotra), and forms such as polygyny, while the Dharmasutras listed eight types of marriage.
What was the varna order and who upheld it?
A fourfold ranking of brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya and shudra, upheld by brahmanas who claimed it was divinely ordained and fixed by birth.
How was the Brahmanical ideal of varna challenged in practice?
Many groups — jatis, forest dwellers, occupational communities and those outside the varna scheme — did not fit neatly, and rulers of varied origins claimed kshatriya status.
What does the figure of Draupadi reveal about kinship norms?
Her marriage to the five Pandava brothers (polyandry) is unusual and shows that practices in the epic did not always match prescribed Brahmanical norms.
What was niyoga?
A practice by which a man could father children with his brother's widow or wife under certain conditions, mentioned in the epic and texts.
How did caste status relate to occupation?
Texts associated each varna with prescribed occupations, but jatis based on occupation multiplied and people's actual work did not always match their assigned varna.
How have historians prepared a usable text of the Mahabharata?
Scholars led by V.S. Sukthankar at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute compared thousands of manuscripts to produce a critical edition over several decades.
Why is there a gap between prescriptive texts and real society?
Dharmashastras laid down ideals composed by brahmanas, but inscriptions and the epic show that real practices of caste, gender and kinship were often more varied and flexible.
