Chapter summary
Key ideas & terms
- Absolute humidity
- the weight of water vapour per unit volume of air (grams per cubic metre).
- Relative humidity
- the percentage of moisture present compared to the air's full capacity at a given temperature.
- Dew point
- the temperature at which a given sample of air becomes saturated.
- Condensation
- the transformation of water vapour into water through loss of heat, often around hygroscopic nuclei.
- Orographic rainfall
- relief rain formed when saturated air is forced to rise over a mountain, leaving a rain-shadow.
- Rain-shadow area
- the dry leeward side of a mountain that receives little rainfall.
Extra questions & answers
What is humidity and how is absolute humidity measured?
Humidity is the water vapour in the air; absolute humidity is its weight per unit volume, in grams per cubic metre.
What is relative humidity?
The percentage of moisture in the air compared to its full capacity at a given temperature.
Define the dew point.
The temperature at which a given sample of air becomes saturated and can hold no more moisture.
How do evaporation and condensation differ?
Evaporation changes water from liquid to vapour using heat; condensation changes vapour to liquid through the loss of heat.
Name the forms that condensation takes.
Dew, frost, fog, mist and clouds.
What is the difference between fog and mist?
Both are clouds near the ground, but mist contains more moisture than fog and gives visibility between 1 and 2 km, while fog reduces it to less than 1 km.
Name the four basic cloud types.
Cirrus, cumulus, stratus and nimbus.
What are the three types of rainfall?
Convectional, orographic (relief) and cyclonic (frontal) rainfall.
How does orographic rainfall create a rain-shadow?
Saturated air rises and rains on the windward slope, then descends warm and dry on the leeward side, which becomes the rain-shadow area.
How does rainfall generally vary from the equator to the poles?
It decreases steadily from the equator towards the poles, and coastal areas receive more rain than continental interiors.
