Railway GDCE vs RRB Recruitment: Same Syllabus? What Actually Differs

NCR says GDCE follows the RRB direct-recruitment syllabus and second-stage pattern, ALP excepted. Who sits it and who runs it differ; age, reservation, posting and preference follow each GDCE notice.

Railway GDCE vs RRB Recruitment: Same Syllabus? What Actually Differs

Checked 16 October 2026. Only what the 2026 GDCE notifications of NCR, CR and ECoR and Western Railway’s 2026 notices say about GDCE and its link to direct recruitment. We do not describe RRB open recruitment beyond what these documents state.

The question every serving employee asks first: is GDCE just the RRB exam with fewer competitors? On syllabus, nearly, outside ALP. North Central Railway’s 2026 notification says the GDCE syllabus and pattern are “same as prescribed by RRB for the Direct Recruitment except ALP category”, and that each GDCE paper follows “the same pattern as is being followed presently for Direct Recruitment by RRBs in its second stage” (para 6.0, Table-A, citing RBE 28/2026 of 23.03.2026). On almost everything else — who may sit it, who conducts it, age, reservation, posting, preference — the GDCE notifications set their own rules. This guide lists both halves, only from those documents.

Where other pages get this wrong

GDCE is conducted by a zonal Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC), for the employees its notification names, against a departmental quota — not by a Railway Recruitment Board.

Commonly published instead: Pages that treat GDCE as one national RRB exam with a common notification and common dates.

NCR, CR and ECoR each issued their own GDCE notification, on their own websites, with their own dates: CR on 22.04.2026, ECoR on 07.08.2026, NCR on 28.09.2026. Each invites only that railway’s own regular employees (NCR and ECoR add: with lien in it). ECoR’s subject line states the quota: GDCE fills “25% of the net Direct Recruitment Quota vacancies in Safety/Non-Safety category posts”.

What is the same as direct recruitment

PointWhat the GDCE notifications say
SyllabusSame as prescribed by the RRB for direct recruitment, except ALP (NCR 6.0 Table-A). ALP’s Mathematics, Reasoning and Basic Science & Engineering syllabus is the RRB ALP syllabus; the trade part follows the DGT syllabus for the 15 ALP trades (NCR Annexure A).
Paper patternNCR: one MCQ paper per category on the pattern of the RRBs’ second-stage CBT, except ALP, which has the revised pattern of Annexure A (para 6.0). Western Railway’s corrigendum applies the second-stage pattern to its older 2023 cycle, with its own ALP arrangements.
QualificationThe educational qualification prescribed for direct recruitment to the post (NCR item 11, CR 2.9, ECoR 10.9).
Difficulty and qualifying standard for ALP“As per matrix fixed by the RRB for direct recruitment” and “As per RRB standards” (NCR Annexure A, Table-B).
CBAT for ALPAs prescribed for direct recruitment by the RRB in consultation with RDSO; T-score 42 in each battery (NCR Annexure A).
NormalisationThe RRBs’ percentile method for CBTs in multiple shifts (ECoR Annexure F, notice of 09.02.2026); merit index as the RRBs use for JE (Western Railway corrigendum, item 4).
Medical standardsPost-wise medical categories (A1 for ALP, for example) under Chapter 5 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual (NCR Annexure E note).

What is different in GDCE

PointGDCE (2026 notifications)
Who may applyOnly that railway’s regular employees (NCR and ECoR: with lien in it), RPF/RPSF excluded; NCR (1.0) and CR (2.1) state no minimum service.
Conducted byThe zone’s Railway Recruitment Cell, on its own website: rrcpryj.org (NCR), rrccr.com (CR), rrcbbs.org.in (ECoR).
VacanciesA departmental quota — ECoR: 25% of net direct-recruitment vacancies in safety and non-safety posts.
Grade ruleLower-grade employees may apply for any category; same-grade employees only from non-safety to safety or safety to safety; not from a higher grade; NCR and CR also bar the post you already hold.
Upper age42 (UR), 45 (OBC), 47 (SC/ST), reckoned on 01.01.2027 (NCR, ECoR) or 01.07.2026 (CR).
EWSNo separate reservation of posts for EWS (Board letter 02.05.2019, RBE 72/2019).
Qualification proofNCR and CR: the qualification must be endorsed in your service record (NCR: also in HRMS, 3.2). All three: name and date of birth must match the service record.
Exam-day documentsAmong others: NCR — the e-call letter, Railway ID and a certified sparing letter (13.2–13.5); CR and ECoR — a relieving letter, the e-call letter and a valid photo ID (CR 15.4, ECoR 14.4). Each also asks for the uploaded colour photograph. NCR says departmental sparing procedures may be followed (16.0(iii)).
PostingNCR: “anywhere in North Central Railway” (item 16). ECoR: any division or unit of ECoR (6.0(l)). CR’s notification says the division issues the offer subject to vacancies and states no posting rule.
PreferencePost preference is final once given; empanelled candidates forfeit consideration for any other post (NCR 16.0(vii)).
DisputesThe Central Administrative Tribunal: Allahabad (NCR), Mumbai (CR), Cuttack (ECoR).
Unfair meansUsing unfair means or impersonation: lifetime debarment from all RRB and RRC exams, departmental disciplinary action and possible prosecution.

Sources named in each row. NCR’s and ECoR’s notifications also say the decision of the RRC on eligibility, posts and allotment is final.

The ALP exception, explained

ALP is the one category where NCR says GDCE has a revised examination pattern rather than the direct-recruitment one. The 2026 GDCE ALP paper is one CBT of 100 questions in 120 minutes, roughly a quarter each on Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, Basic Science and Engineering, and a Trade Specific Section of around 25 questions on the common DGT topics of the ALP trades. The CBAT follows, for up to eight times the ALP vacancies in each community (plus anyone tied at the cut-off), and the ALP merit list gives 50% weightage to the CBT and 50% to the CBAT in all three notifications (NCR and CR cite the Railway Board letter dated 16.04.2026). The notifications do not describe the RRB’s own ALP stages, so we do not compare them here; what matters for you is that the GDCE ALP paper puts all four parts in one sitting.

GDCE, RRB recruitment, or both?

The GDCE notifications say nothing about whether a serving employee may also sit an RRB open recruitment, so we do not answer that here; check your own RRB notice and your department’s permission rules. What the GDCE documents do make clear is why GDCE is worth taking seriously if you are eligible: the competition is limited to your own railway’s employees with the qualification, the age limit runs to 42, 45 or 47, and the syllabus is the one you would prepare for an RRB exam anyway. A candidate who prepares Mathematics, Reasoning and the science or technical section for GDCE is preparing the same material an RRB paper asks.

Before you choose, check these in your own notification

  • Is the post you want notified in your zone this cycle? Not every RRC notifies every post — NCR’s 2026 notification has no Goods Train Manager or Station Master vacancies.
  • Does your present grade allow it? Same-grade moves only to safety posts.
  • NCR: is your qualification recorded in your service record and HRMS? CR: in your Service Register? (ECoR does not state this requirement.)
  • Which trade (ALP) or exam group (JE) will you name — the ALP trade section and the JE Technical Abilities depend on it. (NCR item 15 also links Technician questions to the trade, which its Technician tables do not show.)
  • Have you listed every post you would accept? NCR treats a post you do not opt for as unwillingness, and NCR and CR do not allow preferences to be changed.

Older GDCE notifications still running

GDCE cycles can take years to finish. Western Railway’s notice of 18.05.2026 says that, following RBE 28/2026, CBTs will be held for its GDCE 01/2021 (JE TMC) and 01/2023 (ALP, Technician-III, JE, Train Manager) notifications, and its corrigendum moved the 2023 Train Manager paper to the new 120-question pattern. Its Train Manager CBT is scheduled for 17, 24 and 29 October 2026 (notice of 10.09.2026). If you applied under an older notification, its own corrigenda govern your paper, not the 2026 notifications of other zones.

Practise it, don't just read it

Outside JE, GDCE papers carry Mathematics and Reasoning on the RRB syllabus. The quiz library is a quick way to test both.

The ProSyllabus Railway GDCE library has topic quizzes on Mathematics and on General Intelligence and Reasoning, which appear (Mathematics sometimes as Arithmetic) in every 2026 GDCE paper of NCR, CR and ECoR except Junior Engineer. The first quiz is free.

Frequently asked questions

What is GDCE in Railway?

The General Departmental Competitive Examination: a selection run by a zone’s Railway Recruitment Cell for its own regular employees, against a quota of posts normally filled by direct recruitment.

Is the GDCE syllabus the same as RRB?

NCR’s 2026 notification says the syllabus and pattern are the same as prescribed by the RRB for direct recruitment, except ALP, which has a revised pattern.

Who conducts GDCE?

The Railway Recruitment Cell of each zone, for example RRC/NCR Prayagraj, RRC/CR Mumbai and RRC/ECoR Bhubaneswar, each on its own website.

What is the GDCE quota?

ECoR’s 2026 notification fills 25% of the net direct-recruitment quota vacancies in safety and non-safety posts.

Is the GDCE ALP exam different from RRB ALP?

NCR says ALP is the one category with a revised GDCE pattern: one 100-question CBT in 120 minutes with a trade section, then a CBAT, with 50:50 weightage.

Can outsiders apply for GDCE?

No. Only regular employees of the railway that issued the notification may apply (NCR and ECoR add: with lien in it).

Where will I be posted after GDCE?

NCR says anywhere in North Central Railway; ECoR says any of its divisions or units. CR’s notification does not state a posting rule.

What is RBE 28/2026?

A Railway Board letter dated 23.03.2026, cited by NCR and Western Railway. NCR quotes it for a single-stage CBT on the pattern of the RRBs’ second-stage CBT for its notified categories, with ALP on a revised pattern.

Is there EWS reservation in GDCE like RRB exams?

The GDCE notifications say there is no separate reservation of posts for EWS in GDCE.

Are old GDCE notifications still being conducted?

Some are. Western Railway has announced CBTs for its GDCE 01/2021 and 01/2023 notifications; the 2023 Train Manager CBT is on 17, 24 and 29 October 2026, under a revised pattern.
