Railway GDCE 2026 Eligibility: Who Can Apply, Age Limit, Same-Grade Rule

Checked 16 October 2026. From the GDCE notifications of RRC/NCR (28.09.2026, applications 01.10.2026 to 30.10.2026), RRC/CR (22.04.2026, closed 21.05.2026) and RRC/ECoR (07.08.2026, closing date extended to 29.09.2026 by addendum of 14.09.2026). Each RRC’s own rules apply to its own employees.

GDCE is open only to serving railway employees, and each Railway Recruitment Cell runs it for the employees its notification names — usually its own zone (ECoR also includes eligible staff of the erstwhile Waltair Division). The 2026 notifications of North Central Railway, Central Railway and East Coast Railway set out the same core rules — regular employee of that railway, the direct-recruitment qualification, an age band — but they reckon age on different dates and word a few conditions differently. This guide lists who can apply, who cannot, and where the zones part company. As of 16 October 2026 the NCR application window is open until 30.10.2026, 23:59 (NCR notification, cover page).

Where other pages get this wrong

NCR and CR state there is no minimum length of service for GDCE: any regular employee who meets the other conditions may apply.

Commonly published instead: Pages that ask for a fixed number of years of service before a GDCE application.

NCR para 1.0 item 1: “no minimum service condition prescribed as per RBE 72/2024, Dated 02.08.2024.” CR para 2.1: “a regular employee of Central Railway, with no minimum service condition.” A trainee or substitute who is not yet regularised is still excluded (NCR 1.1). ECoR invites regular and eligible employees having lien in East Coast Railway and does not state a minimum-service rule either way.

Railway GDCE 2026: am I inside the age limit?

Enter your date of birth as it is in your service record, the RRC whose notification you are applying under, and your community. Then answer three questions about your present post.

From the age tables of NCR (para 2.0, reckoned on 01.01.2027), ECoR (para 2.2, reckoned on 01.01.2027) and CR (para 4.0, reckoned on 01.07.2026), and the eligibility paragraphs of each (NCR 1.0 items 11–13 and 1.1; CR 2.9–2.12; ECoR 10.9–10.10). Qualification, medical standard and any post-specific rule are not checked here — read Annexure F (NCR), Annexure A (CR) or Annexure B (ECoR).

Age limit and the date it is reckoned on

The upper age limit is the same in all three 2026 notifications: 42 years for UR, 45 for OBC and 47 for SC/ST, with a lower limit of 18. What differs is the date on which age is counted, which moves the date-of-birth window by six months.

NotificationAge reckoned onUR born on or afterOBC born on or afterSC/ST born on or afterBorn on or before (all)

CR GDCE-02/202601.07.202602.07.198402.07.198102.07.197901.07.2008

NCR para 2.0, ECoR para 2.2 (citing RBE 224/99) and CR para 4.0. NCR and ECoR state that both dates are inclusive; CR does not say. NCR’s age table labels the OBC column “18 to 47 Years”, but its own para 2.1 and the date it prints (02.01.1982) give 45; read the paragraph, not the column heading.

Two age rules catch people out. First, no age relaxation is allowed to SC, ST or OBC-NCL candidates applying against unreserved vacancies (all three notifications). Second, the date of birth must match your Class 10 certificate and your service record; no later change is accepted. NCR accepts a birth certificate, the Class 10 certificate or mark sheet, or a school leaving certificate as proof, provided the same date is recorded in the service record.

Who can apply

Who can apply (zone named where only some notifications say it)

  • A regular employee of that railway. NCR and ECoR add lien in it (NCR: North Central Railway; ECoR: East Coast Railway including the erstwhile Waltair division); CR asks for a regular employee of Central Railway (2.1).
  • Holding the educational qualification prescribed for direct recruitment to the post. NCR and CR require it on the closing date and endorsed in the service record (NCR also in HRMS, 3.2); ECoR’s qualification date is discussed below.
  • Working in a lower grade or pay scale than the post — eligible for all categories (NCR item 11, CR 2.9, ECoR 10.9).
  • Working in the same grade — eligible only from a non-safety to a safety post, or from safety to safety (NCR item 12, CR 2.10, ECoR 10.10).
  • Meeting the medical standard for the post; failing the medical rules you out of the panel for that post.

Employees who resign or are transferred out of the railway during the processNCR 1.0 item 2; CR 2.2; ECoR 10.2

A barred employee who is shortlisted anyway is rejected at document verification: the RRCs check eligibility against original documents only after the CBT, and an employee found ineligible after appointment can be removed (NCR item 25, CR 10.0-XI).

The qualification: three details that decide applications

It must be the direct-recruitment qualification

The GDCE posts carry the qualifications of open recruitment. NCR Annexure F and CR Annexure A list them post by post. For ALP that is Class 10 plus an ITI or course-completed Act Apprenticeship in one of 15 named trades, or (in NCR and CR wording) Class 10 plus a three-year diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering; ECoR lists the diploma as an alternative without repeating Class 10. An engineering degree in those disciplines is accepted in place of the diploma. Commercial Clerk cum Ticket Clerk and Junior Clerk cum Typist need Class 12 with at least 50% aggregate; the 50% is not insisted on for SC, ST, PwBD and holders of a higher qualification, and NCR and CR add ex-servicemen. Goods Train Manager, Station Master and Junior Account Assistant cum Typist need a degree.

A diploma does not replace an ITI for Level-2 Technician posts

NCR para 3.4: a diploma or degree in engineering is not accepted in place of an ITI or course-completed Act Apprenticeship for Technician posts in Level 2, unless the post says otherwise, and a graduate Act apprentice is not accepted in place of a course-completed one (RBE 13/2019). For JE and ALP the opposite applies: a B.E. or B.Tech is acceptable in place of the three-year diploma in the same discipline (NCR 3.3).

The date you must hold it by

NCR and CR say the qualification must be held on the closing date of the online application. ECoR para 3.1 says “as on the date of GDCE notification”, while its General Instructions (d) repeat the closing date. If you completed your qualification between 07.08.2026 and ECoR’s closing date, ask RRC/ECoR in writing which rule it applies.

Reservation in GDCE

Vertical reservation for SC, ST and OBC (non-creamy layer) applies, with certificates in the formats annexed to each notification; the OBC certificate must not be older than one year at document verification and must be backed by a self-declaration that you are not in the creamy layer. There is no separate reservation for EWS (Railway Board letter of 02.05.2019, quoted by all three; NCR and CR identify it as RBE 72/2019). PwBD reservation is horizontal and applies in GDCE (NCR 4.2, citing the Board letter of 27.12.2022). NCR says the crucial date for claiming community status, reservation or age relaxation is the closing date of the application, unless specified otherwise (4.1(iii)); CR and ECoR do not print such a rule, so ask your RRC if it matters.

Applying: what to keep ready

Applications are online only, one per candidate, through your RRC’s own website: www.rrcpryj.org (NCR), www.rrccr.com (CR), www.rrcbbs.org.in (ECoR). Submit only one: NCR rejects multiple applications and can debar the candidate from future RRB and RRC exams (12.0(i)); ECoR says duplicate applications will not be entertained (11.2). NCR and CR treat post preferences as final once submitted, and NCR treats a post you do not opt for as unwillingness; ECoR’s addendum of 14.09.2026 let registered applicants edit post, exam group and preferences up to 29.09.2026. You must also name the ITI trade (ALP, Technician) or the exam group (JE) you will be tested in.

Documents named in the 2026 notifications

  • Colour photograph not older than three months (NCR: 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, JPEG, 15–70 KB); keep spare copies — NCR suggests twelve.
  • Signature in running hand on white paper, black ink, 50 mm × 20 mm, 10–40 KB. Block or capital letters are a ground for rejection.
  • Proof of date of birth; qualification certificates; caste and PwBD certificates in the annexed formats.
  • NCR: the Employee Service Certificate (Annexure I), verified by your immediate supervisor with seal and mobile number. ECoR: the application printed, forwarded by your controlling officer and uploaded as a PDF — an application without it is rejected (ECoR 6.0(o), 12.1).
  • A personal mobile number and e-mail ID that you keep active to the end: RRCs do not change them after you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum service condition for Railway GDCE?

NCR and CR say no: NCR cites RBE 72/2024 for “no minimum service condition”, and CR says the same. ECoR’s notification is silent on it. You must be a regular employee; unregularised trainees and substitutes cannot apply.

What is the age limit for GDCE 2026?

18 to 42 for UR, 45 for OBC and 47 for SC/ST. NCR and ECoR count age on 01.01.2027; CR counted it on 01.07.2026.

Can I apply for GDCE in the same grade?

Only from a non-safety post to a safety post, or from a safety post to another safety post. Employees in a lower grade can apply for all categories.

Can RPF staff apply for GDCE?

No. RPF and RPSF personnel are excluded by all three 2026 notifications.

Is there EWS reservation in GDCE?

No separate reservation of posts for EWS, under the Railway Board letter of 02.05.2019, quoted in all three notifications.

Can I apply to another zone’s GDCE?

Generally no. Each notification is for that railway’s own regular employees (NCR and ECoR say: with lien in it; ECoR includes the erstwhile Waltair division/SCoR); anyone transferred out during the process becomes ineligible.

Can a diploma holder apply for GDCE Technician Grade III?

Not in place of the ITI or Act Apprenticeship, unless the post says otherwise (NCR para 3.4). For ALP, NCR and CR accept Matriculation/SSLC plus a diploma in place of ITI; check ECoR’s own wording.

What is the last date of the NCR GDCE 2026 application?

30.10.2026 up to 23:59, on www.rrcpryj.org; applications opened on 01.10.2026.

What share of vacancies goes to GDCE?

ECoR’s 2026 notification is for 25% of the net direct-recruitment quota vacancies in safety and non-safety posts.

Do SC/ST candidates get age relaxation in GDCE?

The higher limit (47) applies when applying against reserved vacancies; no relaxation is allowed against unreserved vacancies.

Can I change my GDCE post preference later?

NCR and CR say post preference once opted is final. ECoR’s addendum of 14.09.2026 allowed edits to post, exam group and preference up to 29.09.2026.

Is graduation needed for GDCE Goods Train Manager?

Yes. CR and ECoR list a degree from a recognised university or its equivalent for Goods Train Manager and Station Master.
