Zones with traceable GDCE activity

There is no national GDCE notification and no single calendar. Each zonal railway's Railway Recruitment Cell notifies its own vacancies against the quota the Railway Board sanctions, and the cycles run out of step: Southern Railway is publishing replacement panels from a 2023 notification while Central Railway has only just closed applications on a 2026 one. Under RBE No. 90/2023 the nodal RRB conducts the computer based test and the aptitude test and passes the scored candidate list to the zonal railway for further action, so the RRB and the RRC each own part of the process. Zones not listed here may also have live cycles that were not traceable in the public record on 22 September 2026.

Dates and windows

Age limits in the Central Railway notifications are reckoned as on 1 July 2026: 18 to 42 for unreserved, 18 to 45 for OBC and 18 to 47 for SC and ST candidates. Because each zone sets its own window, a date that has closed in one zone says nothing about another.

What this means for your preparation

GDCE is not a scheme that runs continuously. It is opened in tranches when the Railway Board sanctions a block of the direct recruitment quota, and it has been interrupted at least once inside the current tranche, with an examination held on 15 December 2023 cancelled three months later. Candidates who treat it as an annual fixture, or who wait for a national advertisement, miss cycles. The notification that matters is the one their own zone's Railway Recruitment Cell issues.

The quota, not demand, sets the vacancy count

RBE No. 80/2023 earmarked 25 per cent of direct recruitment vacancies, including those accruing in the assessment period from 1 July 2023 to 1 July 2025, for GDCE in safety categories such as Assistant Loco Pilot, Technician, Junior Engineer and Train Manager, excluding workshop posts. That arithmetic explains the shape of the zonal notifications: Central Railway's second 2026 notification is dominated by 908 Assistant Loco Pilot vacancies because that is where the open market intake is largest. It also explains why the count differs sharply between zones and between rounds in the same zone, with Central Railway advertising 1,431 posts in March and a revised set in April. The quota is a share of someone else's recruitment, not an assessment of departmental need.

You are sitting the open market paper

RBE No. 28/2026 prescribes a single stage CBT or TBT for each category or group of posts and states that for most categories the syllabus and examination pattern are the same as the RRB prescribes for direct recruitment from the open market. Assistant Loco Pilot has its own framework at 100 multiple choice questions in 120 minutes with one third of a mark deducted for each wrong answer, and Central Railway's notification confirms the same negative marking. The practical consequence is that departmental experience confers no advantage in the paper itself. A serving technician preparing from work knowledge rather than from the RRB syllabus for mathematics, reasoning, general science and current affairs is preparing for the wrong examination.

Two agencies, two sets of communications

Under RBE No. 90/2023 the nodal Railway Recruitment Board conducts the computer based test and, for Assistant Loco Pilot, the computer based aptitude test, then supplies the scored candidate list to the zonal railway for further action. The zonal Railway Recruitment Cell handles the notification, the application, document verification and the medical. Candidates therefore have to watch two channels, and the North Western Railway cycle shows why: e-call letters and an objection tracker for the August and September 2026 computer based tests were issued through a dedicated GDCE portal separate from the main RRC pages. Missing an objection window on an answer key is not recoverable later at document verification.

Service and age conditions differ by round

Central Railway's April 2026 notification states that a candidate must be a regular employee of Central Railway with no minimum service condition, RPF and RPSF staff excluded, with age reckoned as on 1 July 2026 at 18 to 42 for unreserved, 18 to 45 for OBC and 18 to 47 for SC and ST candidates. That is not a standing rule across the system: the Board issued RBE No. 112/2023 clarifying what counts as a regular employee and RBE No. 72/2024 on minimum service conditions for the direct recruitment quota, and zones have applied conditions differently between rounds. Eligibility should be read off the notification in hand rather than from a previous cycle or from another zone.

Closed windows are not closed cycles

Because zones run independently, the stage a cycle has reached varies widely. Southern Railway was still publishing replacement panels in June 2026 from its 2023 notification, North Western Railway ran computer based tests in late August and early September 2026 against a notification numbered 04/2023, and Central Railway closed applications in May 2026 with the test still ahead. A candidate transferring between zones, or one whose zone has not yet notified, gains nothing from tracking another zone's dates. The useful habit is to monitor the home zone's Railway Recruitment Cell site and, where a dedicated GDCE portal exists as at Jaipur, that portal as well, since call letters and answer key objections are posted there.

Is there a national Railway GDCE 2026 notification?

No. GDCE is notified zone by zone. Each zonal railway's Railway Recruitment Cell advertises its own vacancies against the quota the Railway Board sanctions, so there is no common notification, no common application and no common calendar. In 2026 the traceable notifications include Central Railway's RRC/CR/GDCE-01/2026 of 16 March 2026 and RRC/CR/GDCE-02/2026 of 22 April 2026. What is the 25 per cent direct recruitment quota in GDCE?

It is the share of open market recruitment set aside for serving railway employees.
