PSUs Hiring Mining Engineers Through GATE: CIL, NTPC, DVC, NLC, HCL

Lists of “PSUs through GATE Mining” are usually copied from lists for other branches and name companies that have never asked for an MN score. We went the other way: we read every PSU advertisement we could find from 2023 to 2027 and kept only those that named Mining Engineering and a GATE score. Five recruiters qualify — Coal India, NTPC, DVC, Hindustan Copper and NLC India — and between them they advertised nearly 1,000 Mining posts on GATE-2023, 2024 and 2025 scores, roughly nine in ten of them at Coal India (our count). Each has a different eligibility bar, age limit, bond and selection method, and each accepts only specific GATE years. The filter below checks all of them at once.

The pattern in the table is simple. Coal India is the only recruiter with a Mining intake on every recent GATE year except 2026, and it is the only one that has already announced a GATE-2027 intake. The others appear once in a while: NTPC ran Mining through GATE-2024 (Advt 19/23) and again through GATE-2025 (a separate Advt 07A/26), but its EET-2025 main advertisement (14/24) and its GATE-2027 advertisement (11/26) have no Mining discipline. DVC’s Mining intake was a special drive for three disciplines. NLC took Mining through GATE-2023, not through GATE-2024 (Advt 19/2024 has no Mining), and on 24 September 2026 issued an indicative Advt 10/2026 for 145 Graduate Executive Trainees on GATE-2025 scores, 10 of them in Mining (reported; the detailed advertisement with eligibility, age and dates is still awaited).

Two things follow. Where selection is on GATE alone (CIL, and the GATE-based shortlists at NTPC and DVC), marks in the exam are the whole contest: no interview can make up for them. Where an interview carries 20–30% (NLC, HCL), a slightly lower GATE score can still win. And the bonds differ: ₹3 lakh at CIL against ₹5 lakh at NTPC and DVC for general candidates.

Only two recruiters publish anything a candidate can plan with. Coal India prints the GATE score of the last selected candidate of every category in every list — the full series is in our Coal India cut-off guide; in short, UR 540 (GATE-2023) and 603 (GATE-2024) in the first lists — about 37–39 raw marks by our own conversion with that year’s qualifying mark and top-0.1% mean from the GATE statistical report. None of these PSUs asks for a Mine Manager’s certificate at entry. But it decides how far a mining engineer goes afterwards. Under the Coal Mines Regulations 2017 (Reg 15), a First Class Manager’s Certificate of Competency needs a mining degree plus 2 years of qualifying experience; Reg 27 requires a First Class certificate to manage an underground mine producing more than 2,500 tonnes a month or an opencast mine above 20,000 m³ a month. For metal mines, Metalliferous Mines Regulations 1961, Reg 16 cuts the experience needed from 5 and 3 years to 3 and 2 years for a mining diploma or degree holder.
