Who Can Apply for NIFT 2026?
Candidates must ensure they meet the specific age and academic criteria for their chosen program as of August 1, 2026.
• For B.Des & B.F.Tech: Must have passed 10+2 from a recognized board. Candidates currently appearing for board exams in 2026 are also eligible.
• Age Bar (UG): Maximum 24 years. Relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
• For Masters (M.Des/MFM/M.F.Tech): Requires a Bachelor's Degree. There is no upper age limit for PG programs.
Stage 1: Written Examination Structure
The written entrance consists of two distinct tests designed to evaluate different skill sets:
1. General Ability Test (GAT): A Computer Based Test (CBT) covering Quantitative Ability, Communication, English Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, and GK.
2. Creative Ability Test (CAT): A Paper-Based Test (PBT) that evaluates drawing skills, observation power, and design innovation. (Required for B.Des and M.Des only).
High-Weightage Syllabus Topics
Creative Ability Test (CAT): Focus on color terminology, 3D visualization, storytelling through visuals, and perspective drawing.
General Ability Test (GAT): Focus on Current Affairs related to the fashion industry, ratios & proportions, and logical puzzles.
Negative Marking: Note that the GAT section has a penalty of -0.25 for every wrong MCQ.
Stage 2: The Situation Test
Shortlisted B.Des candidates must appear for this 2-hour practical exam. You are provided with materials (like cardboard, wire, cloth) to build a 3D model based on a theme.
• Evaluation: Judged on material handling, creative use of colors, and the "Write-up" explaining your concept.
• Weightage: The Situation Test accounts for 20% of your final merit score.
