Understanding the Marking Scheme
For Bachelor of Design (B.Des), your final merit is a cumulative score of three stages. Precision in CAT is vital as it carries the highest weightage for designers.
• CAT (Creative Ability Test): 50% Weightage. Tests drawing, intuition, and observation.
• GAT (General Ability Test): 30% Weightage. Tests English, Math, Logic, and GK.
• Situation Test (Stage 2): 20% Weightage. 3D model making using provided materials.
CAT: Mastering Design Intuition
CAT is not just about "good drawing"; it is about Visual Storytelling. Focus on these high-yield pillars:
1. Perspectives & Proportion: Master 1-point and 2-point perspectives. Practice human figures in action and correct anatomical proportions.
2. Color Theory: Understand the psychology of colors. Use gradients to show depth and texture.
3. Storyboarding: Practice creating 3-5 frame comic strips based on specific themes or emotional transitions.
4. Product Redesign: Take an everyday object (like a water bottle) and redesign it for a specific user group (e.g., a futuristic traveler).
GAT: Speed and Accuracy Drills
GAT is a Computer Based Test (CBT). You have 120 minutes for 100 questions.
• Quantitative Ability: Class 10 level Math. Focus on Percentages, Profit/Loss, Averages, and Ratio-Proportion.
• Communication & English: Reading Comprehension is key. Build a daily habit of reading fashion blogs or newspapers like *The Hindu*.
• Fashion GK: This is the "hidden" scorer. Study famous designers, Indian textile history (e.g., Ikat, Chanderi), and global fashion weeks.
Situation Test: Thinking in 3D
Once you clear the written cutoff, you will be invited for a 2-hour model-making test.
• Material Handling: Practice with cardboard, wire, clay, and translucent sheets. Avoid using scales or compasses; NIFT values hands-on skill.
• Concept Note: You must write a 100-word explanation for your model. It should justify your material choice and the solution to the problem statement.
Success Roadmap for the Final Days
1. Sketch Daily: Design is a muscle. Dedicate 2 hours every morning to sketching from real-life observation rather than photographs.
2. Solve PYQs: Analyze papers from 2020-2025. NTA has introduced more image-based puzzles in recent years.
3. Mock Drills: Take at least two full-length CAT+GAT mocks to build the stamina required for a 5-hour exam day.
4. Observation Diary: Carry a small notepad. Sketch unique patterns or architectural details you see in your city—these serve as great "mental libraries" for the exam.
