MAH LLB CAP 2026: Rounds, Freeze vs Betterment and the ₹1,000 Fee

Checked 29 September 2026. From the LLB 3 Yrs and LLB 5 Yrs CAP portals 2026-27 and the CET Cell's CAP notices of 17 July and 7 August 2026. The 2027-28 rules may differ.

Clearing the MAH LLB CET does not give you a seat; the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) does. It is a separate registration on a separate portal, with a document check, a merit list, three allotment rounds and then an institute-level round. In 2026 the CET Cell made two changes midway: it re-opened the Round I option form because new law colleges were receiving Bar Council of India approval during the process, and it ended auto-freeze, so every allotted candidate chose between Freeze and Betterment — both for a ₹1,000 seat acceptance fee. This guide lays out the 2026 process from the portals and notices.

From the admission schedule on the LLB 5 Yrs CAP portal 2026-27, read 29 September 2026.

Two details in that schedule matter. Before Round III the portal re-opened the CAP application and option forms for all candidates, with a fresh document scrutiny and merit list — a late second chance for anyone who missed earlier steps. And in the institute-level round, colleges generate their own merit lists through the CAP portal for vacant CAP seats and management-quota seats, and post them on their notice boards and websites; you apply by selecting colleges online, then seek admission according to those lists.

What changed on 7 August 2026

The CET Cell's public notice of 7 August 2026 explained that Bar Council of India and university approvals were "being granted during the admission process", so law colleges were joining CAP in phases. To give every candidate a fair chance at the new colleges it made five changes "only for the Academic Year 2026–27":

ChangeWhat it meant
1. Round I option form re-openedAll submitted Round I option forms were unlocked for a one-time edit until 9 August 2026
2. Auto-freeze discontinuedA first-preference allotment in Round I or II was no longer frozen automatically
3. FreezePay the ₹1,000 seat acceptance fee, select Freeze, report to the college for document verification
4. BettermentPay the ₹1,000 fee, select Betterment, stay in the next round; a fresh or edited option form allowed before Rounds II and III
5. Round III is finalNo betterment after Round III; report and complete admission or lose the seat

Paraphrased from public notice No. HED-1126/CR.No.25/CAP Reg 2026/1931/2026, dated 7 August 2026.

Freeze or betterment? What 2026's rules meant

Choose the CAP round and what you want. The checker applies the CET Cell's public notice of 7 August 2026 for LLB 3-year and 5-year CAP 2026-27.

2026-27 rules. The notice discontinued auto-freeze "only for the Academic Year 2026–27"; read the 2027-28 notices before relying on this.

Three smaller points in the same notice are easy to miss. The re-opened Round I option form counted only for the Round I allotment; it did not carry forward as a promise for later rounds. A candidate who took Betterment could submit a new option form, or edit the old one, before Round II and again before Round III, so a Betterment candidate can re-rank colleges that joined CAP late. And the notice was issued in both Marathi and English, citing a letter of the Higher and Technical Education Department dated the same day — if a coaching summary contradicts it, the notice on the CET Cell site is what counts.

Who gets into CAP: 2026 against 2025

Applications verified44,78342,866
Colleges218224

From the dashboards of the 2025-26 and 2026-27 LLB 3 Yrs CAP portals, read 29 September 2026. The 2026-27 admitted count will rise through the institute-level round.

Two readings from these numbers (ours). First, about one registrant in four never got a verified application in 2025-26 — 59,306 registered, 44,783 verified — and about one in five so far in 2026-27 (55,031 and 42,866). The dashboard does not say why; incomplete documents and unlocked forms are the usual reasons the CAP notices warn about. Second, verified applicants outnumbered seats almost two to one (44,783 against 23,859 in 2025-26), yet 22,917 of those seats were eventually filled: many applicants hold offers elsewhere or drop out, which is why later rounds move so far down the list.

Filling the option form well

Our suggestions

  • List colleges in true order of preference: a higher preference is never lost by listing a lower one after it.
  • Use the Round I cut-off guide to include a spread — a few colleges above your percentile, most around it, and several safely below.
  • Check the seat type (aided, un-aided, minority) and the fee before listing: one college can appear twice.
  • If you plan to take Betterment, re-order your list before Round II; you may submit a fresh form.

The documents that decide your category

Upload these in the CAP application

  • CET score card and the degree (or Class 12, for LLB 5-year) marksheets.
  • If the result is declared but the marksheet is not issued: the online result sheet, attested with the signature and stamp of your college or university head (allowed by the CET Cell's notice of 17 July 2026).
  • For a Maharashtra reserved category: caste certificate, caste validity certificate and a non-creamy-layer certificate valid to 31 March 2027 (where applicable).
  • Proof of your Maharashtra candidature type, or the documents for All India candidature.
  • EWS, PwD, orphan, defence or minority certificates if you claim them.
