MH CET Law paper structure, 3-year and 5-year compared

Both papers are online multiple-choice, available in English and Marathi, scored at one mark per correct answer with no negative marking. The section weights are not interchangeable: English is the largest block in the 3-year paper at 40 questions but the joint smallest in the 5-year paper at 24, while Mathematical Aptitude exists only in the 5-year paper. Dates and windows

Sources differ slightly on the 3-year Round 3 option-filling close, with one giving September 5 on the revised schedule and another September 6 as the registration and option form deadline. No institute-level round start date for the 3-year track was found in the sources consulted, only the statement that colleges fill vacancies directly once Round 3 ends.

What this means for your preparation

The error that recurs every year is treating MH CET Law as one exam with one calendar. It is two, and the calendars are deliberately staggered. In 2026 the 3-year paper was written on April 1 and 2 and the 5-year on May 8; the final merit lists came four days apart; Round 1 allotment fell three days apart; and in the final round the 3-year allotment preceded the 5-year by a day while its reporting window started two days later. A candidate or parent working from the wrong track's schedule will miss a reporting deadline by days.

The section weights invert between the two papers

Both papers are 120 questions, 120 marks and 120 minutes, online, in English or Marathi, with one mark per correct answer and no negative marking. But the contents diverge sharply. The 3-year paper leans on English, 40 questions, and Current Affairs and General Knowledge, 32, with Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning at 24 each. The 5-year paper reverses that, giving 32 each to Legal Aptitude and Logical and Analytical Reasoning, 24 each to Current Affairs and English, and adding 8 Mathematical Aptitude questions that do not appear in the 3-year paper at all. A graduate preparing from a 5-year syllabus wastes effort on maths and under-prepares the English block that carries a third of their paper.

No negative marking means no blanks

Neither paper deducts for a wrong answer. With 120 questions in 120 minutes, that makes the optimal strategy mechanical: every question gets an answer, and any question left unmarked at the bell is a mark discarded for nothing. The binding constraint is time, not risk. Reserve the last five minutes purely to fill every remaining bubble, and treat long reading-comprehension passages and multi-condition analytical reasoning sets as the items to defer rather than the ones to labour over, since they consume time disproportionately to the single mark each carries. Legal Aptitude principle-and-fact questions reward speed of principle application, not legal knowledge.

Round 3 was a one-way door in both tracks

For the 3-year course, Collegedunia reports that Round 3 was the final CAP round of the 2026 cycle, that the betterment option available in earlier rounds was withdrawn, and that candidates who had accepted and frozen a seat in Round 2 were barred from participating. Eligibility was restricted to MH CET Law 2026 qualifiers who had not registered in earlier rounds. That combination means a Round 2 freeze was irreversible: it secured a seat but closed off any upgrade. Candidates who floated or slid in Round 2 hoping for a better Round 3 allotment had to accept whatever the final round produced, because there is no fourth centralised round to fall back on.

The institute-level round is not an extension of CAP

For the 5-year integrated course, the institute-level round begins on September 25, 2026, two days after Round 3 reporting closes. Seats that go unclaimed in the centralised process pass to colleges to fill directly. This is a different process with different mechanics: colleges publish their own vacancy positions and their own procedures, the CAP merit number no longer allots seats automatically, and fee and reporting terms are set by the institute. Candidates who are unallotted after Round 3 should identify target colleges and monitor those colleges' own admission pages from September 24 onwards rather than waiting for a CET Cell notification.

E-scrutiny is the stage that silently decides your merit number

On the revised CAP schedule, e-scrutiny for the 3-year course ran June 12 to July 16 and for the 5-year course June 20 to July 21, each followed by an alphabetical list display and a three or four day grievance and edit window, July 17 to 20 and July 22 to 24 respectively, before the final merit lists on July 24 and July 28. That grievance window is the only opportunity to correct a category, domicile or document error. After the final merit list publishes, the merit number is fixed through all three CAP rounds. Candidates who skip the alphabetical list check because the seat allotment is still weeks away lose the only correction mechanism the process offers.

Common questions

Is MH CET Law 2026 CAP counselling still open?

Only just, and only for reporting. Round 3, the final centralised round, has already allotted seats in both tracks: September 17 at 17:00 for the 3-year LLB and September 18 at 17:00 for the 5-year. Reporting runs September 21 to 24 for the 3-year course and September 19 to 23 for the 5-year. Nothing further can be added to the choice list. The 5-year institute-level round against vacant seats is reported to begin on September 25, 2026.

What is the difference between the 3-year and 5-year LLB CET schedules?

They are separate cycles on separate portals, llb3cap26.mahacet.org and llb5cap26.mahacet.org. The 3-year exam was held April 1 and 2, 2026 and the 5-year on May 8. CAP registration was June 11 to July 13 for the 3-year and June 19 to July 17 for the 5-year, with final merit lists on July 24 and July 28 respectively. Round dates differ by one to three days throughout, so always work from your own track's schedule.

Is there negative marking in MH CET Law?
