Checked 29 September 2026. Direct-recruitment facts are from the AAO (Generalist) 32nd batch notification (registration from 16.08.2025) and LIC’s 2026 cut-off tables and lists; no 2026 AAO recruitment notice was on licindia.in on 29.09.2026, and the next notice may change the age, pattern or pay. Pay scales and exam allowances are from the Gazette of 30.04.2024 (in force from 01.08.2022). The pay fixed for a 1(b) promotee is not published. Probation, pay fixation and transfer are from the Staff Rules.
An LIC Assistant has two doors to the AAO post, and many can try both. Item 1(b) of the 1987 Promotion Rules is the internal one: five years’ service, age up to 45, Matric/HSC, the Fellowship or five actuarial subjects, a Promotion Test and ranking within your zone. The AAO (Generalist) recruitment is the open one: a degree, an age limit of 30 with a further five years for confirmed LIC employees, and an all-India Prelim, Main and Interview. This guide sets the two side by side, lets you check which is open to you, and then covers what happens after a 1(b) promotion: probation, when your pay is fixed, the Class III allowance that stops and the Class I one that may follow, and how the scales compare, each figure labelled with its source and year. ProSyllabus is an independent study site, not part of the Life Insurance Corporation of India. Every rule here is quoted or summarised from LIC’s published rules, an LIC recruitment notification or a court record; your Zonal Office decides every individual case.
LIC Promotion Rules 1987; AAO (Generalist) 32nd batch notification, 2025; LIC Staff Rules rule 16 (official).
The two doors, side by side
| Point | 1(b) promotion | Open AAO (Generalist) recruitment, 2025 notice |
|---|---|---|
| Who may apply | Assistants and Stenographers with 5 years in the Assistant scale or higher | Any Indian citizen graduate aged 21 to 30 on 01.08.2025; confirmed LIC employees get a further 5 years |
| Age cap | 45 (35 in texts older than the 2011 amendment) | 30, plus category relaxation, plus 5 more for confirmed LIC employees |
| Education | Matric/HSC | Bachelor’s degree in any discipline |
| Professional qualification | Fellowship of the III (FFII) or 5 actuarial subjects | None |
| Selection | Pass the Promotion Test; panel on work record + test, with below-average work records excluded; up to 5 times the vacancies interviewed; ranking list on Test 50 + Work Record 25 + Interview 25 | Prelim (qualifying), Main 300 + descriptive 25 (qualifying), Interview 60; final merit is Main + Interview |
| Competition | Within your Zonal Office | All-India |
| Vacancies | Not published; LIC’s counsel told the Madras High Court (order of 10.12.2015) that the 2015 Southern Zone exercise under serials 1, 2 and 4 expected "in the region of 150" | 350 (32nd batch) |
| Posting | Selection is from your zone (rule 3); the Promotion Rules do not fix later posting, and Staff Rule 80 allows transfer from one LIC office to another | At least 5 years in mofussil branches outside your home zone after training |
| Bond | None found in any 1(b) text | Undertaking to serve 4 years, or Rs 5,00,000 liquidated damages |
| Probation | 1 year, extendable to 2 in total; lien on your lower post | 1 year, extendable up to 2 |
The trade-off follows from the table. The promotion route rewards what an Assistant already has, service and a work record, and you compete only within your zone, but it needs the Fellowship (or five actuarial subjects) and depends on your zone notifying a round. The open route needs a degree and ignores your service, but it is advertised publicly, runs to a published pattern and calendar, and has a fixed number of posts. The 4-year undertaking and the out-of-zone mofussil condition are in the direct-recruitment notice; nothing in the 1(b) texts mentions them. That does not mean a promotee stays in the zone: rule 3 governs who is selected, not where they serve afterwards, and Staff Rule 80 allows transfer between offices.
The open recruitment, stage by stage (2025 notice)
| Stage | Content | Counts for merit? |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary (online, 1 hour, no negative marks) | Reasoning 35 Q / 35 marks; Quantitative Aptitude 35 / 35; English 30 / 30 (qualifying, not counted) | No: only for shortlisting to the Main, about 20 times the vacancies |
| Main, objective (online, 2 hours, no negative marks) | Reasoning 30 Q / 90; General Knowledge and Current Affairs 30 / 60; Data Analysis and Interpretation 30 / 90; Insurance and Financial Market Awareness 30 / 60: 120 Q, 300 marks | Yes |
| Main, descriptive English (30 minutes, typed) | 2 questions, 25 marks: emails, reports, situation analysis and precis | No: qualifying |
| Interview | 60 marks; qualifying 30 for UR, EWS and OBC, 27 for SC, ST and PwBD; about 3 times the vacancies called | Yes: final merit is Main + Interview |
Of the four Main sections, one, Insurance and Financial Market Awareness, is 60 of 300 marks and is the section a serving LIC employee may find most familiar. The rest is the same banking-style reasoning, data and general-knowledge preparation as any public-sector officer exam. The 2025 cycle’s Prelim was held on 03 and 07.10.2025 and the Main on 08.11.2025, as LIC’s cut-off table records.
How the 2025 open recruitment ended
LIC has published the cut-offs and the final lists for the 32nd batch. They show how high the bar was for a serving employee who takes the open door. Candidate lists carry names; we give counts only.
| Stage | UR | OBC | EWS | SC | ST | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prelim total (out of 70) | 58 | 55 | 54 | 51 | 46 | LIC cut-off table, 32nd batch |
| Main total (out of 300) | 232 | 221 | 220 | 205 | 189 | LIC cut-off table |
| Main + Interview (300 + interview maximum 60 per the notice = 360, our sum) | 294 | 285 | 288 | 271 | 260 | LIC cut-off table |
Sectional cut-offs also applied: in the Prelim 18 of 35 in Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude and 10 of 30 in English for UR, OBC and EWS (16, 16 and 9 for SC, ST and PwBD); in the Main 45 of 90, 30 of 60, 45 of 90 and 30 of 60 (40, 27, 40 and 27 for SC, ST and PwBD), and 10 of 25 in the qualifying descriptive paper (9 for SC, ST and PwBD). Ties are broken by aggregate marks, then a post-graduate qualification, then age. LIC listed 350 candidates for the pre-recruitment medical examination on 09.04.2026 and a later list of 333 found eligible after it. A notice of 22.04.2026 says individual marks will be released only after the whole process is finalised. On 29.09.2026 no 2026 AAO recruitment notice was on LIC’s careers page.
Which door is open to you?
1(b) or the open AAO exam: route picker
1(b) conditions from the LIC Promotion Rules 1987 as hosted by LIC. Open-recruitment conditions from the AAO (Generalist) 32nd batch notification of 2025 (age as on 01.08.2025); a new notice may change them. Adding the LIC-employee 5 years on top of category relaxation is our reading of the word "further" in that notice. PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxations are not modelled.
Worked cases for readers without JavaScript. Age ceilings for the open route are our arithmetic on the 2025 notice.
| Case | 1(b) | Open AAO (2025 rules) |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed Assistant, 34, graduate, FIII, 7 years, General | Open | Open: upper age 35 (30 + 5 as an LIC employee) |
| Confirmed Assistant, 38, graduate, FIII, 12 years, OBC | Open | Open: upper age 38 (30 + 3 + 5) |
| Confirmed Assistant, 42, HSC only, FIII, 15 years, SC | Open | Not open: no degree (upper age would be 40 anyway) |
| Confirmed Assistant, 29, graduate, no Fellowship, 5 years | Not yet: needs the Fellowship or 5 actuarial subjects | Open: upper age 35 |
After a 1(b) promotion: probation
| Rule | What it says | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Length | One year on promotion to a Class I or II post (six months for other promotions) | Staff Rules, rule 16(1) |
| Extension | The competent authority may extend it, but the total may not exceed 2 years for Class I and II posts | Rule 16(1)(a) |
| Reversion | "An employee on probation shall be liable to be reverted without notice at any time" | Rule 16(2) |
| Lien | You keep your lien on the lower post, and probation counts as permanent service for all purposes | Rule 16(3) |
| Pay-fixation date | You may choose any date within 12 months of taking charge for fixing your pay in the higher post; until then you draw the lower pay but hold all the powers of the higher post | Rule 52(2) |
The pay-fixation option is worth planning for. If an annual increment in your Assistant scale falls due a few months after you take charge, choosing a fixation date after it can start you from a higher lower-scale basic. The rule allows the choice; which date gives you more depends on the fixation formula, which is in rule 57 and LIC’s pay rules, and on your own increment date. Ask your pay section to work both before you opt.
Pay: what the published scales show
Every figure below is a basic-pay scale, with its source and date. None of them is the pay a 1(b) promotee starts on: the starting cell for an Assistant promoted to AAO is not in any public document we found, and depends on rule 57 and your present basic.
| Post | Scale (basic, Rs a month) | Minimum | Maximum | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant (also Assistants appointed as receiving and paying cashiers, Projectionists, Microprocessor Operators) | 38700-2275(1)-40975-2485(2)-45945-2800(5)-59945-3245(2)-66435-3960(3)-78315-4110(2)-86535-4385(5)-108460 | 38,700 | 1,08,460 | GSR 258(E), Gazette 30.04.2024, in force from 01.08.2022 |
| Stenographer | 48745-2800(4)-59945-3245(2)-66435-3960(3)-78315-4110(2)-86535-4385(8)-121615 | 48,745 | 1,21,615 | GSR 258(E), 30.04.2024, from 01.08.2022 |
| Higher Grade Assistant | 58325-3925(3)-70100-4385(15)-135875 | 58,325 | 1,35,875 | GSR 258(E), 30.04.2024, from 01.08.2022 |
| AAO | 88635-4385(14)-150025-4750(4)-169025 | 88,635 | 1,69,025 | GSR 256(E), 30.04.2024, from 01.08.2022; repeated in the AAO (Generalist) notification, August 2025 |
| AAO (older grade on one register) | 53600-102090 | 53,600 | 1,02,090 | Central Zone AAO register, 31.12.2022 (an older scale, in our reading) |
Basic pay only, from the Gazette of 30.04.2024 (GSR 256(E) and 258(E), official). The AAO minimum is what a direct recruit starts on; the stage a promotee is fixed at is not published. At the minimum of the AAO scale, the 2025 notice puts total emoluments at about Rs 1,26,000 a month in an A-class city.
Your basic against the AAO scale (our arithmetic)
Compares your basic with the minimum of the AAO scale (Rs 88,635; GSR 256(E) of 30.04.2024 and the August 2025 notice). This is a gap between two published numbers, not your pay after promotion: the stage at which a 1(b) promotee is fixed is not published. Dearness allowance and other allowances are left out.
The gaps between the published figures, for readers without JavaScript, are our arithmetic on the scales in force from 01.08.2022: the AAO minimum (Rs 88,635) is Rs 49,935 above the Assistant minimum (Rs 38,700), but the top of every Class III scale is now above it: the Assistant top (Rs 1,08,460) by Rs 19,825, the Stenographer top (Rs 1,21,615) by Rs 32,980 and the HGA top (Rs 1,35,875) by Rs 47,240. So a long-serving Assistant already earns more basic than a newly recruited AAO; what a promotee gains depends on pay fixation, which is not published. None of these gaps is a promotion increase.
The allowance that stops, and the one that may follow
The Class III Special Allowance Rules pay a monthly allowance for a professional examination: Rs 915 for the III Licentiate, Rs 2,485 for the Associateship, Rs 4,245 for the Fellowship, and Rs 915 per subject passed of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, London, or the Institute of Actuaries of India (GSR 259(E) of 30.04.2024, in force from 01.08.2022). Rule 3(3) is blunt: the allowance "shall be discontinued on and from the date the employee ceases to be a Class-III employee". Because 1(b) requires the Fellowship or five actuarial subjects, almost every 1(b) promotee is drawing one of these and will lose it on promotion. On the other side, the Class I Officers (Special Allowance for Passing Examinations of Insurance Institute of India) Rules, as amended by GSR 262(E) of 30.04.2024, pay confirmed Class I officers Rs 800 for the Licentiate, Rs 3,200 for the Associateship and Rs 6,300 for the Fellowship, "subject to the conditions specified in rule 4". We could not read rule 4, which is in the principal rules of 2021 (GSR 267(E)), so we cannot say whether an officer who passed the Fellowship before promotion receives the full rate, part of it or none. A promotee on probation is not yet confirmed.
What happens after AAO is outside the 1987 Rules, which cover only Class III and IV promotions. A digest of LIC circulars on a legal database says promotion from AAO to Administrative Officer and upward "is based on work record only", with no test or interview; we could not verify that against an LIC text.
Can an LIC Assistant apply for the open AAO recruitment?
Yes, if they hold a degree and meet the age limit. The 2025 notice allowed ages 21 to 30 on 01.08.2025, plus category relaxation, with a further 5 years for confirmed LIC employees.
Which is easier, 1(b) or direct AAO?
Neither is published as easier. 1(b) competes within your zone and counts your work record for a quarter of the marks, but LIC does not publish its pattern or vacancies; in one 2022 exercise the General minimum for promotion was 72 of 100 (CIC record). The open exam is all-India, with a published pattern and 350 posts in 2025; its final UR cut-off was 294 of 360.
What is the AAO salary?
The AAO scale is Rs 88,635-4,385(14)-1,50,025-4,750(4)-1,69,025 (GSR 256(E), in force from 01.08.2022, repeated in the 2025 recruitment notice), with total emoluments of about Rs 1,26,000 a month at the minimum in an A-class city, per the notice. The pay a 1(b) promotee starts on is not published; the top of the Assistant scale (Rs 1,08,460) is already above the AAO minimum.
How long is probation after a 1(b) promotion?
One year for promotion to a Class I post, extendable to a total of 2 years. You can be reverted without notice during probation, and you keep your lien on your lower post (Staff Rules, rule 16).
When is my pay fixed after promotion?
On any date you choose within 12 months of taking charge (Staff Rules, rule 52(2)). Until then you draw your lower pay but hold all the powers of the AAO post.
Do I lose my Fellowship allowance on promotion?
The Class III allowance (Rs 4,245 for the Fellowship since 01.08.2022) stops on the date you cease to be a Class III employee (Special Allowance Rules, rule 3(3)). Confirmed Class I officers have their own III allowance, Rs 6,300 for the Fellowship under GSR 262(E) of 30.04.2024, subject to conditions in rule 4 of those rules that we could not read.
Does a 1(b) promotee have to serve 5 years in a mofussil branch outside the zone?
That specific condition is in the direct-recruitment notice, and no 1(b) text we found mentions it. But selection within a zone (rule 3) is not a posting guarantee: Staff Rule 80 lets the competent authority transfer an employee from one LIC office to another. Check your promotion order.
Is there a bond for 1(b) promotees?
The 4-year undertaking with Rs 5,00,000 liquidated damages is in the direct-recruitment notice. No 1(b) text we found mentions one.
