Checked 25 September 2026. From Notification No. 14 of 2026 and the Admission Policy 2026 (Table 12 and the programme eligibility sections). The 2027 policy may change the 1-year rules.
With the first four-year undergraduates graduating under NEP 2020, the University of Kashmir opened 1-year Masters programmes in 2026 alongside the familiar 2-year ones. Which you can apply for depends on the length of your degree and the credits you earned in the subject — and the minimum marks depend on the programme group, not on the category alone. This guide sets out the rules as printed.
Where other pages get this wrong
For most University of Kashmir PG programmes the minimum is 45% for Open Merit and 40% for reserved categories.
Commonly published instead: "M.A./M.Sc./M.Com require 50% (45% reserved)" or "at least 55% (50% for reserved categories)" for PG.
Table 12 of the Admission Policy 2026 sets 55% / 50% only for M.Tech, M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Pharm, LL.M. and M.Ed.; 50% / 45% for MBA (all variants), MCA, MSW, M.Sc. IT, MTTM and Archaeology; and "All Other Programmes 45% / 40%".

2-year and 1-year Masters
| Programme | Who can apply |
|---|---|
| 2-year Masters | 3- or 4-year graduates with at least 12 credits in the subject (NEP-2020/CBCS), or the subject in all three years / six semesters |
| 1-year Masters | 4-year graduates (Honours / Honours with Research) with 160 credits and at least 20 in the subject; a 4-year graduate may still choose the 2-year programme |
| Applied for both | Sit the 80-question 1-year paper (the common 60 plus the 1-year 20); the score is pro-rated to 60 for the 2-year list, per the revised date sheet of 27-07-2026 |

1-year or 2-year Masters — which can you apply for?
Admission Notification No. 14 of 2026 and Admission Policy 2026 (Table 12). 2-year Masters: graduation with at least 12 credits in the subject (or the subject in all three years). 1-year Masters: a 4-year degree of 160 credits with at least 20 in the subject. Open-eligibility programmes (e.g. Anthropology, Mass Communication, MBA, Social Work) take any graduate. OSJ, NRI and foreign candidates need the Open Merit percentage.
Minimum marks by programme
| Programme group | Open Merit | Reserved |
|---|---|---|
| M.Tech (all branches), M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Pharm, LL.M., M.Ed. | 55% | 50% |
| MBA, MBA-FM, MBA-CME, MBA Executive, IMBA, Archaeology, MCA, MSW, M.Sc. IT, MTTM (also B.Tech, ITEP and Integrated Masters in Botany) | 50% | 45% |
| All other programmes | 45% | 40% |

What to check on your marksheet
Three things on your degree marksheet decide which door is open. First, the length: a three-year degree opens only the 2-year Masters; a four-year degree (Honours, or Honours with Research, of 160 credits) opens both. Second, the credits in the subject: add up the credits of the papers in that subject — at least 12 for the 2-year programme, at least 20 for the 1-year — or, for an older non-credit degree, check that the subject ran through all three years or six semesters. Third, the aggregate percentage against your programme group and category. If your marksheet shows a CGPA rather than a percentage, check how your own university converts it before you rely on it; the Admission Policy states the minimum as a percentage.
How many 1-year seats are there?
| Programme (Main Campus) | 2-year | 1-year |
|---|---|---|
| Economics · History · Political Science · Arabic · Commerce · Urdu | 53 each | 13 each |
| English | 48 (South 44, North 36) | 12 (South 11, North 9) |
| Education | 48 (South 48) | 12 (South 12) |
| Mathematics | 43 (South 40, GDC Baramulla 22) | 11 (South 10, GDC Baramulla 5) |
| Chemistry | 40 | 10 |
| Botany · Zoology | 35 each | 9 each |
| Psychology | 33 (GDC Baramulla 16) | 8 (GDC Baramulla 4) |
| Sociology | 40 | 10 |
Admission Policy 2026, Table 10. Satellite campuses and colleges in brackets; Commerce and Urdu also run at colleges or the South Campus (Commerce: GDC Nawakadal 32/8, GDC Anantnag 24/6; Urdu: South 40/10).
The 1-year intakes are roughly a quarter of the 2-year ones. That matters for a four-year graduate choosing between the two: the 1-year route saves a year but competes for far fewer seats — and in 2026 some 1-year lists closed very high (1-year Psychology's Open Merit closing in Selection List I, EntDownloads 4285, was 74.25 of 80). Applying for both costs one extra ₹250 programme fee and one sitting (the 80-question paper), and keeps both lists open, since the score is pro-rated to 60 for the 2-year list.
Programme-specific requirements
| Programme | Requirement |
|---|---|
| LL.M. | LL.B. with 55% (50% reserved) |
| M.Ed. | B.Ed. from a recognised institution, with 55% (50% reserved) |
| M.P.Ed. | Must first qualify the physical efficiency test (Canadian Fitness Test) before sitting KUET |
| MBA, MBA-FM, MBA-CME | Any graduate, 50% (45% reserved); CMAT candidates first |
| MTTM | Any graduate, 50% (45% reserved); 120-question paper, and in 2026 a group discussion whose points were added in the merit list |
| M.Tech · M.Pharm · M.Sc. Biotechnology | 55% (50% reserved); GATE · GPAT · GAT-B candidates first |
| Philosophy · Public Administration | Any graduate, but half the seats for graduates in the subject |

Open-eligibility programmes
Several programmes take any graduate, whatever the subject: Anthropology, Archaeology, Disaster Management, Gender Studies, Linguistics, the Integrated Masters in Library & Information Sciences, Mass Communication & Journalism, MTTM, MBA, MBA-FM and Social Work. Philosophy and Public Administration are open too, but each keeps 50% of its seats for graduates who studied that subject. For these programmes the 12-credit rule does not apply; the percentage minimum still does.
Result awaited? Apply at your own risk
A three-way date conflict. The 2026 documents gave three different eligibility deadlines: 28 July in the Admission Policy and the notification, "04th of August, 2026" in the answer-key footers, and 7 August in the extension notice of 28 July. The latest notice governs. Final-year and result-awaited candidates may apply "on their own risk". They must pass in full and reach the required percentage by the eligibility deadline — 28 July in the 2026 policy, extended to 7 August 2026 (the answer-key footers, e.g. EntDownloads 4060, even said 4 August). Candidates who could not meet it did "not figure in the Merit List". The university later let late updaters in until 31 August, but they "shall not have any claim for admission against already issued selection lists". So for a final-year student, the practical deadline is the eligibility date, not the exam.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Result awaited at application | Apply provisionally; prove eligibility by the deadline (7 Aug in 2026) or drop out of the merit list |
| Result declared after the deadline | Could update to 31 Aug in 2026, with no claim on selection lists already issued |
| Already hold a PG degree | May take another PG if eligible; a reserved benefit is given once per level (PG and UG separately) and never again in the identical programme |
| Backlog in the degree | The policy states a no-backlog rule only for NRI candidates ("in full without any backlogs"); general candidates must have passed in full by the deadline — ask DACE if you carry a backlog. NRI wording: "in full without any backlogs" |
| Physical Education (M.P.Ed.) | Must first pass the physical efficiency test |

Practise it, don't just read it
If you are a four-year graduate applying for both lists, your paper is 80 questions: the 60 common ones decide the 2-year list and all 80 the 1-year list. Practise the extra 1-year units as well as the common syllabus.
The ProSyllabus KUET library has topic quizzes for English, Commerce, Economics, History and Botany — the first one is free.
What is the eligibility for KUET 2-year Masters?
A 3- or 4-year degree with at least 12 credits in the subject (or the subject in all three years), and 45% (40% reserved) for most programmes.
Who can apply for the 1-year Masters at the University of Kashmir?
Four-year graduates (Honours or Honours with Research) with 160 credits, at least 20 of them in the subject.
What is the minimum percentage for KUET?
45% Open Merit and 40% reserved for most programmes; 50/45 for MBA, MCA, MSW and a few others; 55/50 for M.Tech, M.Pharm, LL.M., M.Ed. and M.Sc. Biotechnology.
What is the minimum percentage for MBA at the University of Kashmir?
50% for Open Merit and 45% for reserved categories.
Can final-year students apply for KUET?
Yes, at their own risk; they must prove eligibility by the deadline — 7 August in 2026 after an extension.
Which KUET programmes accept any graduate?
Anthropology, Archaeology, Disaster Management, Gender Studies, Linguistics, Library Science, Mass Communication, MTTM, MBA, MBA-FM and Social Work; Philosophy and Public Administration too, with half their seats for subject graduates.
Can a 4-year graduate choose the 2-year Masters?
Yes. The notification allows it.
Is there a minimum-marks relaxation for reserved categories in KUET?
Yes, 5 percentage points below the Open Merit minimum for each group.
Can I do a second PG through KUET?
Yes. A reserved-category benefit is granted once for PG admission (UG counts separately) and not again in the identical programme.
Does a CGPA count for the KUET minimum percentage?
The Admission Policy states minimums as percentages; check how your own university converts CGPA to a percentage before you apply.
How many 1-year Masters seats are there at the University of Kashmir?
About a quarter of the 2-year intake — e.g. 13 in Economics, History and Commerce, 12 in English and 9 in Botany and Zoology at the Main Campus in 2026.
Should a 4-year graduate apply for both the 1-year and 2-year Masters?
It costs one extra ₹250 programme fee and one sitting (the 80-question paper), and keeps both lists open, since the score is pro-rated to 60 for the 2-year list.
What is the eligibility for M.P.Ed. at the University of Kashmir?
Candidates must first qualify the physical efficiency test (Canadian Fitness Test) before sitting KUET.
Do outside candidates need higher marks?
OSJ, NRI, foreign and KU-employee-ward candidates need the Open Merit percentage, not the reserved minimum.
