Checked 28 September 2026. From recruiter documents: DRDO RAC Advt 156 (2025) and its schedule, the DRDO public notice of 31 Aug 2026, DRDO Advt 157, the BARC OCES/DGFS-2026 brochure, ISRO ICRB 2026 documents, and NALCO and NMDC Steel GATE adverts. Other PSUs were not checked advert by advert; where we did not check, we say so.
Search for “jobs through GATE XE” and you will find long lists of PSUs. We checked the actual recruitment documents. The result is short. DRDO accepts a GATE XE score for its Scientist ‘B’ materials posts, as an alternative to the Metallurgy paper: five posts in the 2025 advertisement. BARC accepts XE only from Engineering Physics graduates. The ISRO and NALCO documents we examined do not accept XE, and NMDC Steel’s 2026 trainee advert does not use GATE at all. In the documents we checked, XE appears mainly as an admissions paper, and that is not a weakness: it opens 189 CCMT M.Tech programmes and many IIT and IISc ones. This guide sets out what each recruiter’s own document says, so you can plan your GATE papers with the jobs that actually exist.

Where other pages get this wrong
BARC’s OCES/DGFS-2026 brochure accepts a GATE XE score only from candidates whose qualifying degree is B.E./B.Tech in Engineering Physics. The ISRO ICRB Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ documents we examined list EC, ME, CS, CE, EE and Architecture routes, and no XE.
Commonly published instead: “ISRO and BARC recruit through GATE XE”, printed without conditions, including on an earlier page on this site.

The recruiter-by-recruiter check
| Recruiter | Accepts GATE XE? | What the document says |
|---|---|---|
| DRDO RAC, Scientist ‘B’ (Advt 156, 2025) | Yes, materials posts only | Material Engg / Material Science / Metallurgical Engg: “Valid GATE score in Metallurgical Engineering [MT] Or Engineering Sciences [XE]”. No other discipline lists XE. |
| DRDO RAC, GATE 2027 cycle | In principle; posts not yet notified | Public notice of 31 Aug 2026: Scientist ‘B’ recruitment uses a valid GATE score “in the relevant Science and Engineering disciplines including Life Sciences and Engineering Sciences”. The discipline table is not published. |
| DRDO RAC Advt 157 | No GATE at all | Lateral recruitment of experienced scientists; selection without GATE. |
| BARC OCES/DGFS-2026 | Only for Engineering Physics graduates | B.E./B.Tech in Engineering Physics may apply on a GATE 2024, 2025 or 2026 score in PH or XE. No other discipline row admits XE. |
| ISRO ICRB Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ through GATE (2026) | No XE found | Disciplines EC, ME, CS, CE, EE, and Architecture, each tied to its own GATE paper. |
| NALCO Graduate Engineer Trainee (GATE 2023, GATE 2025 adverts) | No | Discipline papers only. |
| NMDC Steel Executive Trainee (EN-05-2026) | No GATE route at all | Its own discipline CBT (70%), group discussion (15%) and interview (15%); GATE is not used. |
| CSIR laboratories, Scientist | No GATE-XE route found | The 2025 notices reported are by degree (M.E./M.Tech/PhD) and interview (reported, not an official document we read). |
| NTPC, IOCL, ONGC, PGCIL, BHEL, HAL, NPCIL | Not checked advert by advert | Their GATE recruitment is organised by discipline papers such as ME, EE and CH; we found no XE clause but did not read every advert. |
Recruiter documents listed in the sources. “No” means the document we read does not list XE; it does not rule out a future advert.
DRDO Scientist ‘B’: the one real XE job route
DRDO’s Recruitment and Assessment Centre (RAC) fills Scientist ‘B’ posts from GATE scores. Advertisement 156 (2025) had 152 vacancies in all: 127 in DRDO, 9 in the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and 16 encadred posts in other Ministry of Defence establishments. Almost every discipline is tied to its own GATE paper. The exception that matters here is the materials discipline, which accepts either the Metallurgical Engineering paper (MT) or Engineering Sciences (XE).
| Item | Advt 156 terms |
|---|---|
| Whole advertisement (v3) | 152 vacancies as printed in v3 (later addenda not re-counted here): DRDO 127, ADA 9, encadred posts in other MoD establishments 16 |
| Posts (materials discipline) | DRDO 4 (UR 2, OBC 1, SC 1) + ADA 1 (UR) |
| Degree | At least first-class B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engg, Materials Engg, Material Science and Engg, or a degree naming Material Engg, Material Science or Metallurgy as the main discipline |
| GATE paper | MT or XE, valid score (GATE 2023, 2024 or 2025 for that cycle) |
| Upper age limit | 35 (UR/EWS), 38 (OBC-NCL), 40 (SC/ST); 10 more years for Divyangjan |
| Shortlisting | GATE score, 1:10 against vacancies, discipline-wise and category-wise |
| Final merit | 80% weightage to GATE score, 20% to the personal interview |
| Interview qualifying marks | 70% (UR) and 60% (EWS/OBC/SC/ST/Divyangjan); below that, the GATE score does not count |
| Pay | Level 10, basic ₹56,100; total emoluments about ₹1,00,000 a month at metro rates when advertised |
| Applications | Advert printed a 4 July 2025 close; the RAC schedule of 2 Sep 2025 shows 13 Jun – 8 Aug 2025 after two addenda |
| Interviews and results | Oct–Nov 2025 (tentative schedule) |
DRDO RAC Advertisement 156 (v3) and its tentative schedule dated 2 Sep 2025. Where the advert and the later schedule differ on dates, both are shown.
Three things follow from those terms. First, the XE route is for materials graduates: a mechanical or chemical graduate with a strong XE score is not eligible for these posts, because the degree condition comes first. Second, with 1:10 shortlisting, four DRDO posts means about forty interview calls across categories, so the GATE score decides whether you are in the room at all, and then carries 80% of the final merit, provided you clear the interview’s own qualifying mark (70% for UR, 60% for other categories). Third, the ratio of posts to candidates is small: five materials posts in a cycle, against every qualified XE candidate with a materials degree and the whole MT field competing for the same posts.
For the 2027 cycle, the only document is the 31 August 2026 public notice. It says DRDO will notify Scientist ‘B’ vacancies for 2027 “in the next few months, depending upon the requirement”, that shortlisting uses a valid GATE score in the relevant disciplines “including Life Sciences and Engineering Sciences”, and that a GATE score is valid for three years. It does not say which disciplines will be advertised or how many posts. A 2027 XE score would stay valid for the adverts of 2027, 2028 and 2029 under that rule.
BARC: Engineering Physics graduates only
BARC’s OCES/DGFS scheme selects trainee scientific officers either through its own online test or on a GATE score followed by an interview. Each degree discipline is tied to specific GATE papers. XE appears in exactly one row: B.E./B.Tech (or integrated M.Tech) in Engineering Physics, where the candidate may use a GATE 2024, 2025 or 2026 score in Physics (PH) or Engineering Sciences (XE). Postgraduates in physics must use the PH paper, and several M.Sc. specialisations are listed as not eligible.
| Your degree | GATE paper BARC accepts (OCES/DGFS-2026) |
|---|---|
| B.E./B.Tech in Engineering Physics | PH or XE (GATE 2024, 2025 or 2026) |
| M.Sc. in Physics (meeting the brochure’s criteria) | PH only |
| M.Sc. in Nanoscience, Medical Physics, Chemical Physics, Astronomy, Geophysics; M.Tech physics (nanomaterials) | Not eligible |
| Mechanical, chemical, metallurgy and other engineering degrees | Their own discipline papers; not XE |

Why ISRO and the PSUs are not on the list
ISRO’s Centralised Recruitment Board fills Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ posts through GATE in a few engineering disciplines, each tied to its own paper: electronics to EC, mechanical to ME, computer science to CS, civil to CE, electrical to EE, and architecture to AR. There is no row for XE. NALCO recruits graduate engineer trainees on discipline papers, and NMDC Steel’s 2026 trainee advert uses its own test instead of GATE. None of the documents we read offered an XE alternative. A mechanical graduate who wants both an M.Tech option and a PSU option should therefore think in terms of two papers, not one.
| Primary paper | Second papers GATE 2027 allows (tentative) |
|---|---|
| XE | AE, CE, CH, CY, DA, ME, MT, NM, PH, PI |
| MT | XE only |
| ME, CH, CE, PH and the others above | XE is on each of their lists |
GATE 2027 Information Brochure, Table 4, and the two-paper combinations page. Both papers must be on a different day or session; the list is marked tentative.
That table is the practical answer to “jobs through XE”. A materials graduate can write MT and XE, and both count for the DRDO materials posts. A mechanical graduate who wants PSU interviews writes ME, and can add XE as a second paper to widen M.Tech options, especially the programmes that name Fluid, Solid or Thermodynamics. An engineering physics graduate aiming at BARC can use PH or XE.
Which GATE paper does your target job need?
What XE does open: M.Tech and research
The admissions side is where XE is strong. CCMT admitted XE at 189 programmes in 48 institutes in 2026. IISc publishes XE-specific cut-offs for about a dozen M.Tech programmes, and several IITs name XE sections for their programmes, which our section-requirements guide sets out in full. Those degrees, not the paper itself, are what lead to most research and industry jobs for XE candidates: an M.Tech is also a route back into DRDO and BARC through degree-based lateral and research-fellow recruitment, which we have not documented here.
| Route | XE admitted |
|---|---|
| CCMT (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs), 2026 | 189 programmes at 48 institutes, any sections |
| IISc M.Tech/M.Des, 2026 | Separate XE cut-offs, 500 to 900 (GN) depending on programme |
| IIT Bombay, 2026-27 | Biomedical, Ocean Engg (XE with B&H), Energy Science (XE-I), Geoinformatics (XE-H), IE and OR, Metallurgy and Materials |
| IIT Madras, 2026 | Aerospace, Applied Mechanics, Manufacturing, Metallurgy and Materials, and others (pooled cut-offs) |

Salaries are the question we cannot answer from documents. We found no official placement or salary data for XE M.Tech graduates from any institute or recruiter, and we do not print figures we cannot source. The Scientist ‘B’ pay above is the one official number.

Practise it, don't just read it
DRDO’s materials posts are the one DRDO route that takes XE, and phase diagrams are core to XE2. Our Iron-Carbon Phase Diagram quiz is a quick check.
The ProSyllabus GATE XE library has ten topic quizzes today: four on XE0 Engineering Mathematics (Vector differentiation identities, Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, Numerical Root Finding Methods, Probability Distributions), Bernoulli Equation and Pipe Flow (XE1), Iron-Carbon Phase Diagram (XE2), Stress strain relations and Bending of Beams (XE3), and First law closed systems and Entropy and the Second Law (XE4), each with a worked explanation for every option.
Which PSUs recruit through GATE XE?
None of the PSU adverts we checked accept XE: NALCO uses discipline papers, and NMDC Steel’s 2026 trainee advert does not use GATE. NTPC, IOCL, ONGC, PGCIL, BHEL, HAL and NPCIL were not checked advert by advert, but their GATE recruitment is organised by discipline papers such as ME, EE and CH.
Does DRDO accept GATE XE?
Yes, for Scientist ‘B’ in the materials discipline: Advt 156 (2025) accepted a valid GATE score in MT or XE for 4 DRDO posts and 1 ADA post, for first-class B.E./B.Tech graduates in metallurgy or materials. Selection was 80% GATE score and 20% interview.
Can I join BARC through GATE XE?
Only if your B.E./B.Tech is in Engineering Physics. The BARC OCES/DGFS-2026 brochure lets those graduates apply with a GATE 2024, 2025 or 2026 score in PH or XE. No other discipline may use XE.
Does ISRO recruit through GATE XE?
Not in the ISRO ICRB documents we examined. Its 2026 Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ recruitment through GATE covered electronics, mechanical, computer science, civil, electrical and architecture, each on its own GATE paper.
Will DRDO use GATE 2027 XE scores?
The DRDO public notice of 31 August 2026 says Scientist ‘B’ recruitment for 2027 will use valid GATE scores in the relevant disciplines, including Engineering Sciences. The discipline-wise vacancy table had not been published on 28 September 2026.
What is the salary of a DRDO Scientist B?
Level 10 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, basic pay ₹56,100. Advt 156 put total emoluments at about ₹1,00,000 a month at metro-city rates when it was published.
