GATE 2027 Textile Paper Moves Into XE as XE9: What TF Aspirants Must Do

Checked 28 September 2026. From the GATE 2027 brochure and exam-papers page (IIT Madras), the GATE 2026 TF and GATE 2027 XE0/XE9 syllabi, and the GATE 2023–2026 statistical reports. How institutes will read a GATE 2027 XE score from a textile graduate is not yet published; where we interpret, we say so.

If you were preparing for the GATE Textile Engineering and Fibre Science paper (TF), the paper no longer exists. The GATE 2027 brochure says TF “will be a part of XE sectional paper (XE9 …) from GATE 2027”, and the exam-papers page marks it “Converted”. From 2027, a textile graduate writes the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper: General Aptitude, the compulsory XE0 Engineering Mathematics, section XE9 Textile, and optionally one more XE section. The five textile subject sections carry over with nearly the same text (one line on an elastic model of plain-woven fabric is gone). What changes is the weight: textile goes from 72 marks (plus 13 of textile-specific maths) of a paper you shared only with other textile candidates to 35 marks of a paper written by about nine thousand people. The mathematics syllabus changes too: some TF statistics topics, such as hypothesis tests and control charts, are not in XE0.

Where other pages get this wrong

From GATE 2027 there is no TF paper. Textile Engineering and Fibre Science is section XE9 of the XE paper, alongside XE0 Engineering Mathematics and any one other XE section.

Commonly published instead: Coaching pages and older guides that still list “GATE TF 2027”, its pattern and its own engineering-mathematics syllabus.

GATE 2027 Information Brochure (IIT Madras) and the GATE 2027 exam-papers page (“TF … Converted”).

GATE 2026 and GATE 2027 information brochures and syllabi. Question counts for XE0 and the sections are from the XE pattern in the 2027 brochure. For TF, the GATE 2026 paper pattern gave 13 marks to engineering mathematics and 72 to the textile subject.

Two consequences matter most. The first is the competition. Your score is computed from the whole XE paper’s qualifying mark and top-candidates’ average, not from a textile-only field. The second is the second section. The brochure section says “at most two”, which suggests one optional section is allowed; the code table and the website say any two. If you answer XE9 alone, you are playing for 65 of the paper’s 100 marks while other candidates play for 100. We read the rules as making the second section optional but, for anyone chasing a rank, necessary. That is our interpretation, not a statement in the brochure.

Four years of GATE TF, the paper that is going

The TF history tells you what you are moving from. About 1,200 to 1,900 candidates appeared each year and about a fifth qualified. The top-candidates’ average (M̄t: the mean of the top 0.1% or top 10 candidates, whichever is larger, so the top 10 for a paper this size) sat in the high fifties to mid sixties, and a textile topper reached a score of 1000 in 2024 and 2025.

70045.951.755.251.2
80051.758.461.056.9

Our arithmetic: the official GATE score formula, Score = 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) ÷ (M̄t − Mq), solved for marks with each year’s TF values above.

In TF, about 45 to 49 marks earned a score of 600 in three of the four years. The XE paper behaves differently: its qualifying mark and top-candidates’ average come from a much larger and differently prepared field, and in 2026 a score of 600 needed several more XE marks than TF marks (our marks-vs-score guide has the full XE table). You cannot carry a TF target score across unchanged. What you can carry across is the subject knowledge, and XE9 now has to earn a bigger share of the paper’s marks through the second section and XE0.

The mathematics changes more than the textile

The XE9 textile text keeps the five TF subject sections under their old titles: Fibres; Yarn Manufacture, Structure and Properties; Fabric Manufacture, Structure and Properties; Textile Testing; and Chemical Processing. We compared them phrase by phrase: the one deletion we found is “Elastic model of plain-woven fabric” in Fabric Manufacture; Peirce’s plain-woven geometry stays. The mathematics is a different matter. TF had its own engineering-mathematics syllabus with an applied-statistics flavour. XE0 is the common Engineering Sciences maths, and it is more classical.

GATE 2026 TF syllabus (IIT Guwahati) and GATE 2027 XE0 syllabus (IIT Madras); the comparison is ours.

The statistics you learned for TF is not all wasted: sampling techniques, sample size and sampling errors stay in Textile Testing in both syllabi, and distributions, correlation and regression remain in XE0. What leaves is the inferential block: confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, ANOVA and control charts. But the new XE0 topics, especially complex variables, vector calculus and Bayes’ theorem, are absent from anything a TF candidate prepared before. XE0 is 15 marks with 11 questions, as large as General Aptitude, and it is compulsory. Our weightage guide shows which XE0 topics carried the marks in 2023–2026.

Choosing the second section

Because XE9 on its own is only 35 marks, a textile graduate’s biggest decision is the second section. No official document recommends one. Our reading of the syllabi is below, and it is interpretation. XE5 Polymer Science and Engineering overlaps most with XE9 Fibres: both cover polymerisation of fibre-forming polymers, glass transition and melting, melt spinning, and structure characterisation by X-ray diffraction, microscopy and thermal analysis. XE2 Materials Science overlaps with fibre structure and mechanical properties, but its 2027 text is much longer than 2026’s. XE4 Thermodynamics and XE1 Fluid Mechanics have little textile overlap but suit candidates strong in engineering fundamentals.

Second section (2027 code)Overlap with XE9 (our reading)Worth considering if
XE5 Polymer Science and EngineeringHigh: fibre-forming polymers, Tg and Tm, melt spinning, characterisationyou did well in the Fibres section of TF
XE2 Materials ScienceMedium: structure, crystallinity, mechanical propertiesyou liked structure-property topics; note the longer 2027 syllabus
XE4 ThermodynamicsLowyour engineering fundamentals are strong
XE1 Fluid MechanicsLow: some link to air-jet and wet processingyou are comfortable with flow and pressure problems
None (XE9 only)—you only need to qualify, not to rank

Which second section should a textile graduate pick?

Where a textile XE score is accepted

Admission rules for 2027 are not yet out, and the ones available were written for TF. Some already name textile explicitly. IIT Bombay’s Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science footnote accepts XE only from listed degree disciplines, and TC and TF are on that list. Its Industrial Engineering and Operations Research programme accepted PE, PH, TF and XE at the same cut-off. IISc’s 2026 Smart Manufacturing cut-off block printed a TF row. Dedicated textile M.Tech programmes admitted on TF; we have not seen their 2027 rules and cannot say how they will phrase XE9.

Is GATE Textile (TF) available in 2027?

No. The GATE 2027 brochure says TF becomes part of the XE paper as section XE9 from GATE 2027, and the exam-papers page marks TF “Converted”.

How many marks is textile worth in GATE 2027?

XE9 is 35 marks of the 100-mark XE paper. The rest is General Aptitude (15), XE0 Engineering Mathematics (15) and an optional second XE section (35). In TF 2026, maths and textile together made 85 marks.

Is the XE9 syllabus the same as the old TF syllabus?

The five textile subject sections keep their titles and almost all their text; the one deletion we found is the elastic model of plain-woven fabric. TF’s own engineering mathematics is replaced by XE0, which drops confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, ANOVA and control charts and adds complex variables, vector calculus and Bayes’ theorem.

Which XE section should a textile student take with XE9?

No official guidance exists. On our reading of the syllabi, XE5 Polymer Science and Engineering overlaps most with XE9 Fibres. XE2 Materials Science is the next closest.

How many students wrote GATE TF?

1,183 appeared in 2026 and 251 qualified. Appeared was 1,688 in 2023, 1,422 in 2024 and 1,889 in 2025.

What were the GATE TF 2026 cut-off marks?

31.5 for General, 28.3 for OBC-NCL and EWS, and 21.0 for SC, ST and PwD. The top-10 average (M̄t) was 62.5 marks, and the topper scored 66.33 marks for a score of 968.
