Checked 28 September 2026. Every input is from the official GATE 2023–2026 statistical reports, cut-off and AIR pages. Score conversions, candidates at or above a mark and qualified shares are our arithmetic. GATE 2027 results are scheduled for 19 March 2027, subject to change.
GATE Engineering Sciences is a mid-sized paper with a remarkably steady cut-off. The general qualifying mark has sat between 35.2 and 37.9 for four years, and about one in five of those who appear qualify every year. What did change in 2026 was the size of the field: 9,099 appeared, down from about 11,200 in each of the three years before. With fewer candidates and a higher top-candidates’ mean, a mark of 50 was about the top 800 in 2023 but about the top 400 in 2026. This guide lays out the official numbers, the score each mark was worth, the rank bands from the statistical reports, and a calculator you can use against your mock-test marks.

Where other pages get this wrong
In GATE 2026, a score of 800–900 in XE was an All India Rank of 5–23, 700–800 was 26–69, 600–700 was 72–190 and 500–600 was 198–460. 9,099 candidates appeared.
Commonly published instead: Score-to-rank tables such as “800+ → AIR 1–100; 650–800 → 100–400; 500–650 → 400–1000” and field sizes of “11–15k appeared”, including on an earlier page on this site. Those ranks are four to five times too generous against the official bands.

GATE 2023 (IIT Kanpur), 2024 (IISc), 2025 (IIT Roorkee) and 2026 (IIT Guwahati) statistical reports and cut-off pages, XE rows. The 2023 report prints the SD column before the mean. Points per mark = 550 ÷ (M̄t − Mq), our arithmetic.
Official report figures. The cut-off drifted down every year while the top end widened in 2026.
Two readings from that table. First, the cut-off is set by the field, not by a floor or a cap: for GEN it is the mean plus one standard deviation, never below 25 and (from GATE 2025) never above 40, and XE’s μ + σ has sat in the mid-30s every year. OBC-NCL and EWS get 0.9 of it and SC, ST and PwD two-thirds. Second, the top end moves more than the cut-off. In 2026 M̄t rose to 81.17, which spread the 550 score points above the cut-off over more marks: each mark was worth about 12 score points, against about 13 to 14 in 2023–2025. A 2026 candidate needed slightly more marks for the same score.
Marks → score on each year’s field
The score is 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) ÷ (M̄t − Mq), capped at 1000, where M is your mark, Mq the GEN qualifying mark and M̄t the mean of the top 0.1% or top 10 candidates, whichever is larger. XE has been a single-session paper every year from 2023 to 2026, so there is no normalisation: your raw mark is the mark used.

GATE XE marks → score → rank calculator
Enter your expected marks out of 100 (after negative marking). The calculator applies the official GATE score formula using the real qualifying mark and topper average of the year you pick, and estimates a rank from that year's official mark distribution.
Estimates only. Your real score depends on the 2027 field, which is not known until the result on 19 March 2027. Qualifying marks by category are the official figures for that year. Rank is interpolated between official mark bands and is approximate.

Your GATE XE score, read against four years of official rank bands
Enter a GATE score out of 1000. The tool finds the band it falls in and shows the All India Ranks that band covered in each year’s official statistical report.
XE score-band → rank tables of the GATE 2023–2026 statistical reports, as printed. The same numbers are in the table above. A score on a band edge is shown in the higher band for 2024–2026; the 2023 report prints its bands as 1000–901, 900–801 and so on, so for 2023 an edge score such as 900 falls in the lower band.
Ranks run past the number who qualified: in 2026 the 200–300 band reaches rank 3,283 although only 1,838 qualified. That is not an error. The All India Rank orders everyone who appeared by marks, and reserved-category candidates qualify below the general cut-off of 350 score, so their ranks fall in the lower bands. Read the bands together with the marks table above: on the 2026 field a mark of about 56 was a score of 600 and a rank of roughly 190; about 64.5 was 700 and roughly rank 69; about 73 was 800 and a rank in the low 20s.

Summed by us from the official appeared-marks tables.
The pattern is consistent. 60 marks has been top-300 or better every year, and in 2025 and 2026 it was about the top 125–135. The 40–50 range, just above the cut-off, is where the field thins fastest: in 2026 968 candidates were at 40 or more but only 391 at 50 or more. That is the practical argument for pushing a mock-test average from the low 40s to the 50s. Fewer than one in five candidates ever cross 40.

Official statistical reports, gender tables (the 2023 report has no XE gender table in the form used here). Only female and male rows are shown; the reports also list an Other category (1 or 2 candidates a year), so the rows do not add exactly to the totals. Ratios are ours.
The gender gap is large and has not been explained by the organisers. Women were about 23% of those who appeared in 2026 but 13% of those who qualified. The reports do not break results down by section, so we cannot say whether the gap follows section choice. The 2026 fall in registrations was almost entirely among men (12,014 to 9,719), while female registrations held level (2,921 to 2,902).

GATE 2024, 2025 and 2026 All India Rank pages. The 2023 AIR-1 page was not located; the 2023 report’s highest mark was 83.67 (score 952).
Every AIR 1 in the last three years took Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics. That is evidence about the toppers, not about which pair is easiest: the reports publish no section-wise averages or counts, so we cannot compare pairs. What it does show is that the full 1000-score range is reachable through the Fluid + Solid pair.
Practise it, don't just read it
On the 2026 field every mark above the cut-off was worth about 12 score points. XE0 is 15 marks everyone must write; our Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors quiz covers its steadiest topic.
The ProSyllabus GATE XE library has ten topic quizzes today: four on XE0 Engineering Mathematics (Vector differentiation identities, Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors, Numerical Root Finding Methods, Probability Distributions), Bernoulli Equation and Pipe Flow (XE1), Iron-Carbon Phase Diagram (XE2), Stress strain relations and Bending of Beams (XE3), and First law closed systems and Entropy and the Second Law (XE4), each with a worked explanation for every option.
What is the GATE XE cut-off for 2026?
The qualifying marks for Engineering Sciences in GATE 2026 were 35.2 (General), 31.6 (OBC-NCL/EWS) and 23.4 (SC/ST/PwD), out of 100.
What was the GATE XE cut-off in 2025, 2024 and 2023?
2025: 35.4 / 31.8 / 23.5. 2024: 36.2 / 32.5 / 24.1. 2023: 37.9 / 34.1 / 25.2 (General / OBC-NCL-EWS / SC-ST-PwD).
What rank does 50 marks get in GATE XE?
In 2026, 391 appeared candidates scored 50 or more, and 50 marks converted to a score of about 527. In 2023 the same 50 marks placed about 815th.
How many students write GATE XE?
9,099 appeared in 2026 out of 12,622 registered, and 1,838 qualified. In 2023 to 2025 about 11,200 appeared each year.
How is the GATE XE score calculated?
Score = 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) ÷ (M̄t − Mq), capped at 1000, where Mq is the General qualifying mark and M̄t the mean of the top 0.1% or top 10 candidates, whichever is larger. XE is a single-session paper, so no normalisation applies.
What score is AIR under 100 in GATE XE?
In 2026 the 700–800 band covered ranks 26–69 and the 600–700 band 72–190, so the whole 700–800 band was inside the top 100 while the 600–700 band straddled it; the exact threshold cannot be read from the bands. In 2023 the 700–800 band reached rank 163.
Which sections did GATE XE toppers choose?
The AIR 1 candidates of 2024, 2025 and 2026 (two joint AIR 1s in 2026) all attempted Engineering Mathematics, Fluid Mechanics and Solid Mechanics.
