IIT Madras MA via GATE Philosophy: 3 Seats, 847 Cut-off, IIT PhD Routes

A GATE Philosophy score is used in a small number of places, and only one of them publishes seats and closing scores: IIT Madras’s two-year M.A., which admits only through GATE Humanities scores. A Philosophy candidate can enter two of its four streams. Development Studies sets aside 3 seats for XH-C4, and the new Public Policy stream takes any XH section. Those three Development Studies seats have produced the highest General closing score in the whole IIT Madras M.A. table every year: 748 in 2024, 897 in 2025 and 847 in 2026. This guide converts those scores into marks, adds the fees, and then sets out how the IIT PhD programmes in Philosophy use GATE, which is less than most pages claim.

IIT Madras’s M.A. has four streams of 25 seats each for Indian students: English Studies, Development Studies, Economics and Public Policy. Each accepts named GATE XH sections. For a Philosophy candidate the brochure’s seat table opens two doors. Admission is by GATE score in order of merit, with no separate test or interview.

Every M.A. seat is “Non-HTTA”: no Half-Time Teaching Assistantship, so no monthly stipend. The assistantship figure printed in the same brochure is for M.Tech. Plan to pay the fees yourself or through a scholarship.

Why is the Philosophy cut-off so high? Three seats is part of it: the General seat goes to one of the very top candidates. But the scale matters too. A GATE score is relative to each section’s own top ten, and in Philosophy the top ten are close to the rest of the qualified field, so a strong paper earns a high score quickly. That is our reading of the numbers, not an IIT Madras statement.

The practical target is clear. For the Development Studies seats, a General candidate needed about 58 marks on a 2026-type paper, a rank inside the top ten Philosophy candidates. For the Public Policy stream, where all XH sections compete on their own scores, 618 in 2026 meant about 49 Philosophy marks. Public Policy is therefore the realistic IIT Madras route for most strong Philosophy candidates, and worth applying to alongside Development Studies.

IIT Madras is not the only IIT master’s door, only the only one with a published cut-off table. Two others use a GATE Philosophy score as a way past the first round, after which an interview decides. Neither publishes closing scores, so there is no mark to aim at; qualifying is what counts.

For a PhD in Philosophy at an IIT, GATE is at most one of several ways to become eligible, usually alongside UGC-NET/JRF, and it normally needs a master’s degree as well. Read the exact line for the department you want.

What does IIT Kanpur’s “top 5%” mean for Philosophy? If it means 5% of the Philosophy candidates who appeared, it was about the top 28 of 570 in 2026, 26 of 531 in 2025, 17 of 340 in 2024 and 17 of 352 in 2023. On the 2026 table, rank 28 sat at the boundary between the 600–700 band (ranks 14–27) and the 500–600 band (ranks 29–53), or about 48 marks by our conversion. If it means 5% of all XH candidates across the six sections, the rank allowed is larger. The page does not say which; ask the department before relying on it.

We found no PSU, government or company recruitment notice that uses the GATE Philosophy score; the recruiters the GATE brochure mentions use engineering and science papers. Direct recruitment of college teachers rests on NET/SET or a qualifying PhD under UGC rules, not GATE. IIT Madras takes M.A. applications on its M.Tech./M.Sc./M.A. admission portal (mtechadm.iitm.ac.in); the 2027 dates are not out yet. Apply to both Development Studies and Public Policy, since each fills from its own merit list. A GATE score is valid for three years, so check which GATE years the 2027 brochure accepts and use your best valid score.
