Philosophy students in India meet two national exams: GATE Humanities (Philosophy section), run by an IIT, and UGC-NET in Philosophy (subject code 003), run by the National Testing Agency. They are often compared as if they were rivals. They are not. GATE is open from the third year of a bachelor’s degree and its score is used for admission to an IIT M.A. and, at some IITs, as one route into a PhD. UGC-NET is built for people who hold or are finishing a master’s degree, and it decides the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), eligibility for Assistant Professor posts and PhD admission. This guide puts the two side by side from the official documents, then offers a short chooser.

Where other pages get this wrong
We found no PSU, government or company recruitment notice that uses the GATE Philosophy score, and Assistant Professor eligibility comes from NET/SET or a qualifying PhD, not GATE. On the admissions side, IIT Madras’s M.A. admits on the score alone, IIT Delhi’s MA CST takes 10 of 25 students through GATE XH plus an interview, and IIT Bombay’s M.A.-Ph.D. in Philosophy exempts GATE Philosophy candidates from Stage I of its entrance.
Commonly published instead: An earlier ProSyllabus cut-off guide gives placement rates and salary figures for GATE Philosophy careers with no source, and describes admissions “via CUET-PG”, a separate exam.

What each one opens
The clearest way to see the difference is by what you can do with a result. GATE Philosophy is an admissions score. UGC-NET is a qualification, graded into three categories by how well you do.

The two calendars barely touch. GATE is written in February and its result arrives in March, in time for M.A. and PhD applications for the July intake. The June NET cycle is written in late June. A final-year master’s student can therefore sit GATE in February and NET in June of the same year without either crowding the other.
How the papers differ in practice
The two papers reward different habits. GATE Philosophy is 60 marks of philosophy inside a 100-mark paper: 40 marks go to General Aptitude and a Reasoning and Comprehension section that is mostly puzzles. MSQs (22–34 of the 60 marks in 2023–2026) demand that you pick exactly the right set of options, and MCQs carry negative marks, so careful skipping matters. UGC-NET gives Philosophy 200 of its 300 marks across 100 questions with no negative marks, so every question should be attempted; its other 100 marks are the general teaching and research aptitude paper.

What about the syllabus? Both cover Indian and Western philosophy at the level of a master’s course, and the GATE XH4 headings (classical and contemporary Indian, classical and modern Western, contemporary Western) will look familiar to a NET candidate. We have not compared the NET Philosophy syllabus line by line with XH4 here, so we make no claim about how much overlaps. If you plan both, work from each exam’s own syllabus document.
Which one should you write?
GATE Philosophy, UGC-NET or both? Three questions
One more practical point: XH can be paired with only one other GATE paper, ST (Statistics), and almost no Philosophy candidate needs it. If you are torn between Philosophy and another XH section such as Sociology or Psychology for the IIT Madras M.A., remember that each section has its own seat list and its own cut-off; our IIT Madras guide has the numbers.
Practise it, don't just read it
If GATE is on your list, practise MSQs deliberately: they carried 22 to 34 of the 60 Philosophy marks a year, and an MSQ can have a single correct option.
The ProSyllabus GATE Philosophy library has ten topic quizzes today: Aristotle’s Four Causes Fundamentals, Nyaya Means of Knowledge Fundamentals, Classical Indian Schools: Samkhya and Vedanta, Descartes and Rationalism, Kant’s Categorical Imperative, Rawls’ Original Position Advanced Challenge, and practice quizzes on Ethics, Logic, Social and Political Philosophy and Contemporary Western Philosophy. There is no Contemporary Indian quiz yet; for that section work from the official papers.
Is GATE Philosophy better than UGC-NET Philosophy?
They serve different purposes. GATE Philosophy is an admission score, mainly for IIT Madras’s M.A. and some IIT PhD routes. UGC-NET decides JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission. For a PhD, writing both gives two routes.
Can a B.A. student write UGC-NET Philosophy?
Not with a 3-year B.A. NET needs a master’s with 55% (50% for reserved categories), or a 4-year bachelor’s with 75% for JRF and PhD only. A 3rd-year B.A. student can write GATE.
Is there negative marking in UGC-NET Philosophy?
No. Every question carries 2 marks and there is no negative marking. GATE Philosophy has negative marks on MCQs only.
What is the UGC-NET Philosophy subject code?
003, in NTA’s June 2026 subject list.
Can GATE Philosophy be used for Assistant Professor posts?
No. Assistant Professor eligibility comes from UGC-NET (Categories 1 and 2) or a PhD, not from GATE.
What is the UGC-NET age limit for JRF?
For the June 2026 cycle, not more than 30 years on 1 June 2026, with up to 5 years’ relaxation for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, third gender and women applicants. There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor or PhD admission.
