Understanding the XH Paper Structure
The XH-C4 paper is divided into three distinct sections. You must clear the cumulative aggregate to secure a top GATE score.
• Part 1: General Aptitude (Compulsory): 15 Marks. Tests basic verbal and numerical logic.
• Part 2: Reasoning & Comprehension (XH-B1): 25 Marks. Compulsory for all XH candidates. Focuses on critical reading and logical inference.
• Part 3: Philosophy (XH-C4): 60 Marks. The core subject section containing 40 technical questions.
Core Syllabus: The Four Pillars
To target an AIR under 100, you must move beyond rote learning and focus on the logical rigor of each system.
1. Classical Indian Philosophy: Orthodox systems (Sankhya, Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Yoga, Mimamsa, Vedanta) and Heterodox systems (Carvaka, Jainism, Buddhism).
2. Classical Western Philosophy: Pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle, and the Medieval tradition (St. Augustine, St. Anselm, St. Thomas Aquinas).
3. Modern & Contemporary Philosophy: Rationalism (Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz), Empiricism (Locke, Berkeley, Hume), Kantianism, Existentialism (Sartre, Heidegger), and Phenomenology.
4. Logic & Ethics: Categorical syllogisms, truth functions, and formal logic. Ethical theories (Kant’s Deontology, Utilitarianism, Eudaemonism, and Meta-ethics).
Contemporary Indian Perspectives
A significant portion of the paper focuses on modern Indian thinkers. Ensure you are well-versed in:
• Practical Vedanta: Vivekananda and Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga.
• Social Philosophy: Gandhi (Swaraj, Satyagraha) and Ambedkar (Annihilation of Caste, Neo-Buddhism).
• Humanism: Tagore and M.N. Roy’s Radical Humanism.
Success Roadmap for 2026
1. Prioritize Section B1 (Comprehension): These 25 marks are crucial for your rank. Practice LSAT/GMAT style critical reasoning to improve speed in B1.
2. The MSQ Shield: Since there is no negative marking for Multiple Select Questions, use them to your advantage. These often test fine distinctions in "Truth and Validity" or "Indian Epistemology."
3. Master Symbolic Logic: GATE Philosophy often includes 2-4 marks of formal logic. Mastering truth tables and quantification rules is a "guaranteed" way to score.
4. Interdisciplinary Prep: Review the intersection of Ethics and Social Philosophy, as many questions in the XH paper are designed to test your ability to apply theory to modern social issues.
