IBPS PO Mains 2026 Pattern: 170 Questions, 160 Minutes, 225 Marks

Checked 1 October 2026. The 4 October 2026 Main date is from the IBPS calendar and the call-letter window; individual reporting instructions are in the candidate’s call letter. Pattern from the XVI notice; IBPS says later changes appear on its site.

The IBPS PO/MT-XVI Main Examination scheduled for 4 October 2026 has a different pattern from last year. The XVI notification prints 170 objective questions for 200 marks in 160 minutes, followed by two descriptive tasks for 25 marks in 30 minutes. The XV notification printed 145 objective questions, also for 200 marks in 160 minutes. The four objective tests are separately timed. A candidate cannot move spare minutes from English into Data Analysis, so the section plan matters as much as the total time.

IBPS XVI notice. The chart shows marks, not question count; English has 40 questions but only 20 marks.

The published table says the tests are “not by sequence.” That is easy to miss. The notification identifies four section durations but does not promise that Reasoning appears first or English third on your screen. Follow the information handout and on-screen sequence on the actual day. A plan that requires a particular order is brittle; prepare a start-of-section routine for each subject that works whenever that timer begins.

The time distribution is not a simple marks-per-minute ranking. General, Economy and Banking Awareness has 50 questions, 60 marks and 35 minutes, the tightest question pace. Reasoning and Data Analysis each have 40 questions, 60 marks and 45 minutes. English has 40 questions and 35 minutes but just 20 marks. This does not mean English can be ignored: the notification requires a minimum score in each Main test as well as a minimum total score. An overall total above an expected cut-off cannot repair a failed sectional minimum.

The objective and descriptive papers together occupy 190 test minutes. IBPS says candidates may need to be at the venue for about four hours or more because of checks, instructions and login. Your call letter controls reporting time. Keep food, travel and medication plans aligned with the venue duration, not just the sum of test timers. The Main call-letter window listed on the official portal runs from 24 September to 4 October 2026. Candidate credentials are needed to retrieve an individual call letter; this guide does not ask for them.

Practical topic checklist, clearly separate from the official pattern

Official testSuggested practice topics, not an IBPS syllabus
ReasoningSeating and arrangement puzzles; syllogism; inequalities; data sufficiency; logical reasoning
General/Economy/Banking, Digital/Financial AwarenessRBI circulars; banking terms and operations; monetary policy; digital payments; recent financial and economic developments
English LanguageReading comprehension; passage-based vocabulary; sentence correction; cloze and paragraph organisation
Data Analysis & InterpretationTables, line and bar charts; caselets; arithmetic-based DI; comparisons and ratios
Descriptive: essay and comprehensionTimed short essay plans on the broad themes named in the notice; passage reading and concise answers

IBPS publishes the test names and broad descriptive themes, not a guaranteed item-by-item Main syllabus. The right column is our preparation checklist drawn from those domains and common aptitude formats. It is not a claim that any listed question type must appear on 4 October. Use it to ensure that practice covers more than the few subjects where you already score well. When choosing a paid mock or revision resource, compare its section timers and marks with the official table above before paying. A resource with a long topic list but the wrong 2026 pattern is poor value.

For a quick diagnostic, the ProSyllabus IBPS PO practice area currently includes high-level syllogism, reading comprehension and simplification quizzes. These are subject drills, not a full 170-question Main simulation. Use the relevant drill to find a weakness, then return to a full mock with the official timers. We currently have no IBPS PO revision kit in the live catalog, so this article links only to resources readers can actually use.

Shift timing: use your call letter, not a copied clock time

StepWhat is fixed publiclyWhere to check
Reporting at the venueLate arrival after the call-letter reporting time is not permittedYour own Main call letter
Checks and instructionsVenue stay may be about four hours or moreCall letter and Main information handout
Objective test160 minutes across separately timed sectionsXVI notification and on-screen instructions
Descriptive test30 minutes for essay and comprehensionXVI notification and on-screen instructions

Coaching sites may report a single afternoon shift or approximate times such as a 1 pm arrival and a 2 pm test start. We could not verify one universal reporting clock time in the public XVI notification. IBPS explicitly makes the reporting time candidate-specific through the call letter. A repeated social-media timetable is useful only as a rough travel prompt; it cannot override the document issued to you. Read the call letter now, note its reporting time, venue address and gate instructions, and plan to reach early. The four section timers and the descriptive timer together explain 190 minutes of test time, but they do not reveal how long your particular venue will take for entry and exit.

The two official notices show the real year-to-year change: 25 more objective questions in the same 160 minutes, with a different distribution of marks and sectional time. If a mock platform still shows 145 questions and last year’s timers, it can diagnose concepts but cannot rehearse 2026 pacing. Some even older pages show 155 questions or a three-hour objective block; do not mistake those for the XV cycle. Replace at least the final set of full mocks with a layout that matches the XVI notification. Check each section’s question count, marks and time, and verify that the descriptive task is essay plus comprehension. A labelled “IBPS PO 2026” test is not proof of compliance; inspect the instructions before paying for a mock pack.

The changed English objective weighting is particularly counterintuitive. Forty English questions share 20 marks; one should not assume every correct answer adds one mark. IBPS states the wrong-answer penalty as one fourth of the marks assigned to that question. Therefore the penalty depends on question value, not a flat quarter mark across every test. A Reasoning question worth more than one mark can cost more than 0.25 marks when wrong. This is why a score calculator built on “+1/−0.25 for everything” would mislead candidates for the Main paper.

The notification says the descriptive paper may be broadly based on economic and social issues, emerging banking and technology trends, current events and ethics. “May be broadly based” is guidance about themes, not a list of guaranteed essay prompts. The same notice says the descriptive paper may be evaluated by a validated automated scoring mechanism for writing proficiency. Candidates should practise structured, legible English writing under the 30-minute timer, including comprehension, while avoiding memorised essays that answer a different question.

How to allocate attention inside each locked section

Start each section by locating the low-risk questions you can solve accurately. The timer creates a trade-off: spending several minutes on one hard reasoning set can leave accessible standalone questions unanswered. Before the test, practise an explicit skip rule, such as moving on when no viable approach appears after the first read. That is our strategy, not an IBPS instruction. The best threshold depends on a candidate’s strengths, but a precommitted rule reduces indecision on test day.

In the 35-minute awareness section, use a two-pass approach in practice: answer high-confidence factual items promptly, then revisit questions where you can eliminate options. The fourth-of-question-mark penalty makes blind marking an avoidable cost when a question is wholly unfamiliar. The notice does not publish a fixed detailed syllabus by topic, so prioritise the named domains—General, Economy, Banking, Digital, Financial Awareness and RBI circulars—without presenting a coaching company’s topic list as official. Exact question types may change.

In the 45-minute Data Analysis section, calculation speed matters only after you choose the right set. Practise reading the complete prompt and data labels before committing. An inaccurate reading of a chart can produce several wrong answers from one mistake, and the negative penalty compounds. In English, the 20-mark weight can tempt candidates to rush, but sectional minima still apply. Use a timed practice record that tracks both marks and time remaining, so you learn where careless errors arise.

After the objective part, the descriptive 30 minutes need their own plan. Read both tasks, reserve time for each, and leave a short proofreading margin. The notification names essay and comprehension; it does not promise that a learned letter format will appear. Your practice should cover a concise argument with a clear claim, evidence and conclusion, as well as precise reading of a passage. Do not insert unsupported statistics into an essay to sound authoritative.

Corrected score, normalisation and cut-offs

RuleOfficial treatment
Wrong objective answerDeduct one fourth of the marks assigned to that question
Blank objective answerNo penalty
Different test sessionsCorrected scores normalised by equi-percentile method if sessions are held
Main qualificationMinimum in each test plus a minimum total; IBPS decides cut-offs based on vacancies
Final meritMain marks and interview, 80:20 relative weight; Prelims do not count

A raw mock total is an input for practice, not a prediction of IBPS’s published score. First, the penalty depends on the marks assigned to individual questions. Second, if candidates sit in different sessions, IBPS normalises corrected scores by an equi-percentile method. Third, the cut-offs are selected after observing the field and vacancies. Neither the notification nor the handout guarantees a “safe score” for 2026. A precise-looking target copied from a past year creates false certainty.

The Main score is what matters after qualification. IBPS’s notice explicitly says Main marks alone are used for shortlisting to the personality test and interview and for final merit listing. The Preliminary paper is a gate to the Main paper; its score is not added to the final 80:20 calculation. Candidates who cleared Prelims by a narrow margin therefore start the Main stage on the same scoring basis as those who led the Prelims field. That is why the remaining preparation should focus on the new Main scheme rather than re-analysing a Prelims percentile.

Document checklist before leaving for the venue

The notification requires the Main call letter, the authenticated or stamped Preliminary call letter, the authenticated or stamped photocopy of the identity proof used at Prelims, and a valid original photo identity document bearing the same name. The candidate’s Main call letter and information handout may add details, so use them as the final checklist. Put the required documents together the evening before travel and check that the name is consistent across them. IBPS says a candidate without the authenticated Preliminary call letter and copy of ID proof will not be allowed to appear for the Main examination.

Do not substitute a screenshot of a third-party result page for the official call letter. Do not assume that arriving at the test start is enough: the notification bars late reporting after the time printed on the call letter, which is earlier than the start of the test. Locate the centre with enough travel margin to absorb delays. These operational steps are mundane, but they have a binary effect on whether the best-prepared candidate can sit the paper.

Is there negative marking?

Yes. Each wrong objective answer loses one fourth of the marks assigned to that question. A blank answer has no penalty.

Is English worth 40 marks?

No. The XVI objective English section has 40 questions but 20 marks.

What is the descriptive paper in 2026?

The notification lists an essay and comprehension, two tasks for 25 marks in 30 minutes.

Can I use time left in one section for another?

No. The four objective tests are separately timed.

Does the Prelims score count in final merit?

No. IBPS says Main marks are used for interview shortlisting and final merit with the interview.
