How to Become a Train Driver in the UK (2026): Requirements, Tests and Pay

Checked 27 October 2026. Updated for the Train Driving Licences and Certificates (Amendment) Regulations 2026, in force 30 June 2026 (minimum licence age 18), and RIS-3751-TOM issue 4. Facts are from the regulations, the Department for Transport, RSSB, the National Careers Service, The Train Drivers Academy and the train companies named at the end, read 23 to 27 Oct 2026. Pay and criteria are each company's own and change with each campaign: the advert you apply to decides.

To become a train driver in the UK, you apply to a train company for a trainee driver job; none of the routes the National Careers Service lists starts with a course you pay for. The company selects you through an application, psychometric tests (the Group Bourdon concentration test among them), interviews and a medical, then pays you while it trains you, usually for 9 to 18 months. Since 30 June 2026 the law allows a licence from age 18, not 20.

Checked on 27 October 2026 against the licensing regulations as amended in 2026, the Department for Transport's explanatory memorandum, RSSB's FAQ on the selection standard, the National Careers Service and the train companies' own pages. Our own advice is labelled as ours. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. It is not part of RSSB, the Office of Rail and Road, The OPC or any train company, and nothing here is official test material.

This guide covers the mainline railway in Great Britain: passenger and freight train companies. The licensing regulations do not extend to Northern Ireland, and the Department for Transport says they exclude tramways, metros and heritage railways, which recruit in their own way.

The route in five steps

How you become a UK train driver, in five steps
1

Check the requirements

Age, education, the medical, and where you live: most companies only take people within a set distance of a depot.

2

Apply to a train company

There is no course to buy first. You apply for a trainee driver job on a company's website or a job advert.

3

Pass selection

An application form, then the company's stages: online tests, the psychometric assessment (the Group Bourdon among it) and interviews.

4

Medical and checks

A medical by or under a recognised doctor (vision, colour vision, hearing, drugs and alcohol) and pre-employment checks.

5

Paid training, licence, certificate

Usually 9 to 18 months, paid. You end with an ORR licence and your employer's certificate for its trains and routes.

Our summary of the regulations, RSSB's FAQ and the train company pages listed at the end. The order of the selection stages differs by company.

The broad stages are similar across companies, but their order and what each company adds are not: Northern, for example, interviews before the psychometric tests. RSSB says the application process varies by company, that most ask for an application form first, and that some add tests or activities of their own to the standard set. Two facts shape your plan before anything else: vacancies open from time to time, so the National Careers Service suggests signing up for train companies' job alerts, and most companies only take people who live near one of their depots.

The requirements: what the law asks, and what companies add

A train driver in Great Britain needs two documents: a train driving licence, issued by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and owned by you, and a train driving certificate, issued and owned by the company that employs you, for the trains and routes you drive. The law sets the conditions for each; companies then set their own entry criteria on top.

Quick check: what stands between you and a trainee driver job?

A guide to the published rules only, not a decision: each train company sets its own criteria within the law, and the medical and the assessment decide.

Where other pages get this wrong

The minimum age to become a train driver in Great Britain is 18, not 20, since 30 June 2026.

Commonly published instead: that you must be 20. RSSB's own FAQ, issue one (December 2024), still reads "currently 20 years old": it was written before the law changed.

S.I. 2026/461 replaced "20" with "18" in regulation 8(2)(a) from 30 June 2026. Two limits remain: drivers under 20 cannot drive in the British Channel Tunnel zone, and a company may still set a higher age in its own advert, so read the advert you apply to.

Why the age dropped to 18, and what it means if you are younger

The Department for Transport's explanatory memorandum gives the reasons. The average train driver in Great Britain is 47, only 3.1% are under 30, and the industry projects that 25% will reach retirement age by 2030. RSSB research published in February 2024 found no clear evidence that drivers aged 18 or 19 pose a higher safety risk than older drivers, given the same training, assessment and supervision. Most school leavers, the memorandum says, have chosen another path by 20, so the old limit kept them out.

The memorandum is also clear about what did not change: every other legal condition for a licence stays the same, and employers can still set their own selection criteria, within the Equality Act 2010. In the public consultation, 52% of respondents opposed the change and 48% supported it; the unions ASLEF and TSSA, the Rail Delivery Group, Network Rail and RSSB were among those in favour.

If you are still at school, The Train Drivers Academy says some companies accept applications from under-18s, that you need to be at least 17 years and 6 months to begin a Level 3 Train Driver Apprenticeship, and that most people will not start training until around 17 years and 9 months or 18, depending on the company.

Selection: the stages train companies publish

RSSB's Rail Industry Standard RIS-3751-TOM issue four sets out a standardised psychometric assessment process for train driver selection, and each company wraps its own stages around it. Here are three companies' published processes side by side:

From table 1 of RSSB's 3751-FAQ (December 2024), an extract of Appendix A of RIS-3751-TOM issue four. WAFV, ATAVT and the MMI each appear under two criteria. TRP = Trainability for Rules and Procedures; SJE = Situational Judgement Exercise; MMI = Multi-Modal Interview.

The psychometric assessment is where most of the preparation goes. RSSB lists the tests by what each assesses: attention is first, with two paper tests, the Group Bourdon and TEA-Occ. No official source we read publishes the Group Bourdon's layout or timing; the train company sends approved practice materials at least a week before your assessment, and those show you what to expect. Each test is explained in our guide to every train driver psychometric test, and the order of the day in what happens on the assessment day.

Four rules from RSSB's FAQ are worth knowing before you apply anywhere:

Before your first assessment

  • Attempts are limited. For candidates starting from 7 December 2024, three failed attempts end the process. Attempt 2 can come at least 1 year after the first failure; attempt 3 only 5 years after the first and at least 1 year after the second. If you sat any part before 7 December 2024, the two-attempt rule applies.
  • Pass marks are set by each company. RIS-3751-TOM does not set pass marks; RSSB recommends them and each train company decides which it uses. Some, like Northern, ask for an enhanced standard.
  • Results last five years for assessments from 7 December 2024.
  • One application at a time. RSSB recommends completing one application and assessment process before starting another, because results from one application affect all others.

From RSSB's 3751-FAQ, questions 14, 19, 28 and 29. Approved practice materials arrive at least a week before your assessment (question 18).

The attempt rules, a date checker and a 12-month plan are in our guide to train driver retakes and pass rates.

The medical

Schedule 1 of the regulations sets the medical requirements. A driver must not have a condition, or take medication, drugs or substances, likely to cause a sudden loss of consciousness, a reduction in attention or concentration, sudden incapacity, a loss of balance or coordination, or significant limitation of mobility. The vision rules include distance visual acuity (aided or unaided) of 1.0, with at least 0.5 in the worse eye, normal colour vision tested with a recognised test such as Ishihara, and a full field of vision; hearing is confirmed by an audiogram. The examination before appointment includes tests for illicit drugs, psychotropic medication and alcohol abuse.

The medical recurs: at least every three years up to the age of 55, then every year. If you have a condition such as ADHD or dyslexia, read our guide to the rules and adjustments for ADHD and dyslexia before you apply.

Training: how long it takes and what you learn

You are paid while you train, and the employer funds the training, The Train Drivers Academy says. How long it lasts depends on the company, its routes and its trains:

SourceTraining length
The Train Drivers AcademyAround 6 months in some simpler operations; most programmes 9 to 18 months; up to 2 years in more complex cases
National Careers ServiceNormally 1 to 2 years; the Train Driver Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship takes 1 to 2 years
SoutheasternUsually 12 to 18 months to qualify
Northern64 weeks, starting with an intensive three-month period on safety, operations and driver responsibilities
Avanti West CoastA 16-week course, then practical driving training (a driver's account on its page)

The law shapes what training covers. The general professional knowledge in Schedule 3 includes rail safety rules, signalling and train control systems, infrastructure, operational communication and the types of train and their systems. The certificate then needs examinations on the employer's own rolling stock and routes, including route knowledge and operating rules, with both theory and practical driving tests on the infrastructure; simulators may be used for particularly difficult situations. While training, you may drive only with an authorised driver accompanying and supervising you in the cab.

Once qualified, the Department for Transport says a licence is valid for 10 years, provided you keep meeting its conditions. The certificate stays with your employer: it is owned by the company that issues it.

Pay: what train companies publish

Pay depends on the company, the location and the type of service, The Train Drivers Academy says. Its published ranges are below, then the one complete pay ladder we found in a company advert:

StagePublished rangeSource

Annual salary as stated in Southeastern's Trainee Train Driver advert, read 27 Oct 2026, plus regional allowance where applicable. The advert also lists a final salary pension, 28 days' annual leave including bank holidays, and free rail travel on its networks.

Shifts come with the pay. Southeastern's advert describes rosters based on a 35-hour week, normally a week of early shifts followed by a week of lates, and Northern asks drivers to work from the early hours to late at night, at weekends and on bank holidays, and to reach work without relying on public transport.

How to prepare: a plan for the months before you apply

WhenWhat to do
NowList the train and freight companies with a depot within your reach and sign up for their job alerts (the National Careers Service suggests this). Check your GCSE certificates and, if unsure, your colour vision.
Before the campaign opensRead the company's train driver page and its last advert: the age, distance and qualification criteria, and its stages. Prepare examples for competency-based questions about rules, safety and reliability.
When you applyApply to one company at a time, as RSSB recommends. If you need adjustments to the tests, tell the recruitment team as soon as possible; evidence will be required.
When invited to the assessmentWork through the approved practice materials the company sends at least a week before. Practise attention in short daily sessions, at the time of day of your assessment.
On the dayBring photo ID (passport or driving licence) and a copy of your National Insurance number, RSSB's minimum; RSSB recommends smart casual dress.

The rules in each row are from the sources named; the timing, the interview examples and the short daily sessions are ProSyllabus advice. A 14-day practice plan for the attention tests is in our Group Bourdon practice guide.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be to become a train driver in the UK?

Since 30 June 2026, the law lets ORR issue a train driving licence from 18 (it was 20), on the mainline in Great Britain. Drivers under 20 cannot drive in the British Channel Tunnel zone, and some companies still ask for 20 or more in their adverts. The Train Drivers Academy says you can begin a Level 3 Train Driver Apprenticeship from 17 years and 6 months.

Do I need qualifications to become a train driver?

The legal minimum is nine years of primary and secondary education. Employers usually expect GCSE English and maths at 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, according to the National Careers Service. RSSB says the recruitment process identifies whether you have the skills and abilities the role needs.

Do I have to pay for train driver training?

No. You apply for a trainee driver job and the company trains you while paying you a salary; The Train Drivers Academy says the training is fully funded by your employer.

How long does it take to become a train driver?

The Train Drivers Academy says most training programmes take 9 to 18 months, from around 6 months in simpler operations to up to 2 years. Southeastern says 12 to 18 months and Northern 64 weeks.

How much do train drivers earn in the UK?

The Train Drivers Academy publishes £27,000 to £34,000 for trainees, £45,000 to £55,000 newly qualified and £60,000 to £77,000 and above fully qualified. Southeastern's advert goes from £27,639 at the start to £62,727 after a year qualified.

What tests do you take to become a train driver?

The standardised psychometric assessment in RSSB's RIS-3751-TOM: the Group Bourdon and TEA-Occ (attention), the WAFV (vigilance), TRP tests (memory and reasoning), the ATAVT (perception), a two-hand coordination test, a situational judgement exercise and a multi-modal interview. Companies add their own online tests and interviews.

What is the Group Bourdon test?

A paper test that assesses attention in the train driver selection standard (RSSB's table 1). No official source we read publishes its layout or timing. The train company sends approved practice materials at least a week before your assessment so you can see what to expect.

Can I become a train driver if I wear glasses?

Under Schedule 1 of the regulations, glasses and contact lenses are allowed when periodically checked by a specialist. The vision standards can be met aided or unaided, within limits on the strength of corrective lenses (hypermetropia +5, myopia -8), with derogations possible in exceptional cases after an eye specialist's opinion. Coloured contact lenses and photochromatic lenses are not allowed.

Can I apply to more than one train company?

RSSB recommends one application and assessment at a time, because the result of one application affects all your other applications. Follow one through to its conclusion before starting another.
