Checked 27 October 2026. Pay, criteria and steps are from Northern's Manchester advert (posted 20 October 2026), a Hull advert and Northern's train driver careers page, read 23 to 27 Oct 2026. Northern sets them per advert and per depot, and they change between campaigns: the advert you apply to decides.
Northern trains its own drivers on a paid apprenticeship: you apply to a trainee train driver advert for one depot, then pass an online assessment, the RSSB psychometric tests at Northern's assessment centre in Leeds (to an enhanced level), a hiring manager assessment day and a medical. Its Manchester advert of 20 October 2026 pays £27,870 a year in training, rising to £53,190 in year 1 and £67,104 in year 3.
Checked on 27 October 2026 against Northern's own adverts on its recruitment site, its train driver careers page and RSSB's FAQ on the selection standard. Where Northern's careers page and its October advert differ, we say so: follow the advert you apply to. Our own advice is labelled as ours. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. It is not part of RSSB, the Office of Rail and Road, The OPC or any train company, and nothing here is official test material.

Who can apply to Northern
Northern's Manchester advert lists the criteria you must meet, or your application is rejected automatically (the first seven rows below); the last two rows are from its careers page and the rest of the advert:
| Requirement | Northern's rule |
|---|---|
| Age | At least 18 at the time of application (Manchester advert, October 2026). Its careers page and a Hull advert say 20; the law has allowed a licence from 18 since 30 June 2026. |
| Where you live | Currently within a 45-minute car journey of the station you would work from. |
| Getting to work | Commit to early, late and weekend shifts without relying on public transport. |
| Colour vision | You must not have defective colour vision. |
| Medical | Pass the TDLCR train driver medical, including drugs and alcohol screening. |
| Psychometric tests | A pass to an enhanced level on the train driver psychometric assessments, valid for 5 years. |
| Earlier attempts | Three attempts at the psychometrics in all: fail the third and you cannot qualify for a train driver position. RSSB keeps the older two-attempt rule for anyone who sat any part before 7 December 2024. Separately, the advert says anyone who interviewed for a driver post within the last year could be rejected automatically. |
| GCSEs | GCSE grade C or above in maths and English, or equivalent (careers page). |
| Checks | Successful offers are subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment. |
Northern's age rule: 18 or 20?
- Northern's Manchester advert (posted 20 October 2026) asks for 18 or over at the time of application.
- Northern's careers page and its Hull advert say 20, and the careers page lists different attempt rules (no fail in the last six months, no two fails before).
- The law has allowed a licence from 18 since 30 June 2026. Each advert sets its own criteria, so read the one you apply to.
The legal rules are in our guide to becoming a train driver in the UK.
Northern also says it does not accept AI applications, and that any suspected use of AI as part of an application means immediate rejection. As a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, it offers an interview to disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria, and its talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process.
Northern's recruitment stages, in order
Northern's Manchester advert describes the steps after you apply. It warns that the whole process takes about six months, and that you may hear nothing for 8 to 12 weeks after applying because of the volume of applications; Northern asks you not to chase before 12 weeks have passed.

From Northern's Manchester advert (posted 20 October 2026), with the application detail from its careers page.
Northern's careers page lists the stages in a different order: an interview with the Driver Management Team in Leeds, with competency-based questions, comes before the psychometric assessments, and there is no separate online assessment. The two differ, so follow the advert you apply to, and expect an interview at some point either way. The medical checks general health, vision and hearing, and includes a drug and alcohol screen.
The psychometric tests on the day
Northern's careers page says the psychometric assessments have three parts: paper tests, computer tests and a multimodal interview. Its assessors are members of the British Psychological Society and are registered with the Office of Rail and Road to carry out train driver assessments, and Northern offers its psychometric assessment services to other train companies. The tests themselves are set by RSSB's standard RIS-3751-TOM; RSSB's FAQ lists them by what each assesses:
| What it assesses | Test (RSSB table 1) |
|---|---|
| Attention | Paper Group Bourdon and Test of Everyday Attention-Occupational (TEA-Occ) |
| Vigilance | WAFV vigilance test |
| Memory | TRP1: Trainability for Rules and Procedures test (part 1b) |
| Reasoning | TRP2: Trainability for Rules and Procedures test (part 2) |
| Perception | ATAVT: Adaptive Tachistoscopic Traffic Test |
| Reaction time | WAFV and ATAVT |
| Hand coordination | 2HAND: two hand coordination test |
| Communication | MMI: Multi-Modal interview |
| Behavioural aptitudes | SJE: Situational Judgement Exercise, and the MMI |
What each test asks of you, in brief
- Group Bourdon (paper, attention). How well you hold attention on a repetitive visual task. No official source we read publishes its layout or timing. Our Group Bourdon practice guide.
- TEA-Occ (attention). The Test of Everyday Attention, occupational version. Our TEA-Occ guide.
- WAFV (vigilance, and reaction time with the ATAVT). Covered in our psychometric tests guide.
- TRP 1 and 2 (memory and reasoning). Trainability for rules and procedures, in two parts.
- ATAVT (perception). The adaptive tachistoscopic traffic test.
- 2HAND (hand coordination). A two-hand coordination test.
- SJE and the multi-modal interview (behaviour, communication). RSSB supplies both.
Test names and what they assess are from RSSB's FAQ, table 1. Each test is explained in our guide to every train driver psychometric test.
Four RSSB rules matter before you sit them: pass marks are recommended by RSSB and chosen by each company (Northern asks for an enhanced level); the company sends approved practice materials at least a week before your assessment; results from assessments since 7 December 2024 last five years; and RSSB recommends finishing one application before starting another, because one result affects all your applications. The attempt rules and waiting times are in our guide to retakes and pass rates, and the order of a typical day in what happens on the assessment day.
One sample: the attention task, in our trainer's format
The Group Bourdon assesses attention. Our trainer practises the same ability with its own task: on each timed sheet, mark every group of exactly four dots and nothing else. Here is one worked example of eight groups, with the three outcomes the trainer counts:
Green frame: a correct mark. Dashed amber: a four you passed without marking (a missed group). Red frame: a mark on a group that is not four (a wrong mark).
Drawn from scratch by ProSyllabus for this guide, not copied or traced from any test or practice material. It shows the format of OUR trainer (find every group of exactly four dots), not a Group Bourdon sheet: no official source we read publishes that layout.

A full trainer sheet has 48 to 126 groups, against the clock
Level 1 is three timed sheets, free with no sign-in. You see your accuracy, groups per minute, and missed and wrong marks counted apart. Independent practice of the same ability, not the Group Bourdon itself.

Training at Northern
Northern's Manchester advert describes the course as an in-house trainee driver course, delivered as part of a 2-year apprenticeship programme:
| Phase | What happens |
|---|---|
| Classroom | A 5-month intensive classroom phase on the theory and safety-critical knowledge a driver needs. No annual leave may be taken in this period. |
| On the job | You are paired with a Driver Mentor and shadow their shift pattern for at least 230 driving hours, with your competence assessed throughout. |
| Final assessment | The programme lasts about 12 months and ends with a final assessment that can take up to two weeks. |
| Where | Training centres in Leeds and Manchester, so you may need to travel; hotels are provided if you live more than 1.5 hours away. |
The careers page describes it differently: 64 weeks of training, starting with an intensive three-month period on safety, operations and driver responsibilities, split between the Manchester or Leeds academies and practical training at your local depot. The two differ; the course you are offered will say which applies.
Northern trainee train driver pay
Pay is set per advert and differs by depot. These are the figures in Northern's own adverts, a year at a time:
Annual salary as stated in Northern's "Trainee Train Driver - Manchester" advert (Manchester Piccadilly), read 27 Oct 2026.
| Stage | Manchester (advert of 20 Oct 2026) | Hull (another advert) |
|---|---|---|
| During training (about 12 months) | £27,870 | £28,020 |
| Year 1 | £53,190 | £48,417 |
| Year 2 | £58,378 | £53,424 |
| Year 3 | £67,104 | £64,772 |
Both adverts describe a rolling 35-hour week with evenings, nights and weekends; the Manchester advert gives example shifts of 03:00 to 10:30, 07:00 to 16:30, 15:30 to 00:30 and 18:00 to 02:30. The benefits it lists include unlimited free travel on Northern for you, your partner and dependants, a 75% discount on other networks in the UK and Europe, a pension where Northern tops up your contributions by 1.5 times, and 9 months of full maternity pay.
Depots, course dates and how offers work
Northern recruits trainee drivers by location: each advert names where you would work, and you must live within a 45-minute car journey of the station you work from. The three adverts we read were for two places: Manchester (Manchester Piccadilly in one advert, Manchester Victoria or Piccadilly, assigned on depot requirements, in another) and Hull. Check Northern's recruitment site for an advert at the depot nearest you.
Course dates come with each advert. The Manchester advert of 20 October 2026 offers courses in January and February 2027, with assessments in November and December 2026; another Manchester advert offered November 2026 and dates from January to May 2027. Northern does not describe a talent pool in the pages we read: its advert says a conditional offer depends on an available training course place and on passing the medical. It also reserves the right to close an advert before its closing date if it receives many applications, so apply early in a campaign.
Our advice for a Northern campaign
- Set up an account and job alerts on Northern's recruitment site, and check the advert for your nearest depot: the age, pay and dates differ.
- Answer the two competency questions in your own words, about rules, safety and reliability: Northern rejects any application where it suspects AI was used.
- Start attention practice when you apply, not when the invitation arrives: the 8 to 12 weeks of silence is your preparation time.
- Attempts are limited (three, or two if you sat any part before 7 December 2024) and results count across companies, so sit the psychometrics only when you are ready.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Northern trainee train driver earn?
In Northern's Manchester advert of 20 October 2026: £27,870 a year during training (about 12 months), then £53,190 in year 1, £58,378 in year 2 and £67,104 in year 3. A Hull advert paid £28,020 in training and £48,417, £53,424 and £64,772 in years 1 to 3. Pay is set per advert and depot.
What is the age limit for a Northern trainee train driver?
Northern's Manchester advert of October 2026 asks for at least 18 at the time of application; its careers page and a Hull advert say 20. Neither mentions an upper age limit. Go by the advert you apply to.
How long does Northern's recruitment and training take?
Northern expects the recruitment process to take about six months, and you may hear nothing for 8 to 12 weeks after applying. The training then lasts about 12 months, within a 2-year apprenticeship, starting with 5 months in the classroom.
Where does Northern hold its psychometric tests?
At its own assessment centre in Leeds. Its assessors are British Psychological Society members, registered with the Office of Rail and Road to carry out train driver assessments, and you must pass to an enhanced level.
Is it hard to become a Northern train driver?
Northern receives a large volume of applications, screens them against fixed criteria, and asks for an enhanced pass on the psychometric tests, with three attempts in all (two for anyone who sat any part before 7 December 2024). No pass rate appears on the pages we read. Meeting every criterion and preparing for the attention tests are the parts you control.
Can I apply if I failed the train driver tests with another company?
Results count across companies: RSSB says one application affects all others. Northern's advert states three attempts at the psychometrics in all (RSSB keeps two attempts for anyone who sat any part before 7 December 2024), and may reject anyone who interviewed for a driver post in the last year. The waiting times between attempts are set by RSSB.
