Previous papers are the most useful thing you can practise from for GATE Life Sciences — and the only practice material written by the people who set the real exam. All eight papers from 2019 to 2026, with their official answer keys, are hosted free on the GATE 2027 website run by IIT Madras. The links are below, each one opened and checked.
Two warnings before you start. First, the 2027 syllabus changed, so some old questions test topics that are no longer on it. Second, the section letters changed: papers up to 2026 call the sections XL-P to XL-U, while 2027 calls them XL0 to XL5. The mapping is in the next table.

The 2026 question paper is a large file (about 20 MB). In the 2026 key, question 46 (Biochemistry, numerical) was marked "MTA" — marks to all.
What recent papers actually look like
We counted every question in the official 2025 and 2026 answer keys by type. MCQs are single-answer and carry negative marking; MSQs (one or more correct) and NATs (typed numerical answers) carry none.

From the official answer keys. MCQs carry negative marking; MSQs and NATs do not.
What the counts tell you
- In Chemistry, 9 of 17 questions in both years were MSQ or NAT — more than half of the compulsory section has no negative marking.
- Across the five optional sections, 39 of 95 questions (2025) and 41 of 95 (2026) were MSQ or NAT: roughly four in ten.
- Biochemistry swung from 3 numerical questions in 2025 to 6 in 2026. If Biochemistry is one of your sections, practise calculations — kinetics, buffers, yields — not just recall.
- General Aptitude has been all-MCQ in both years.
Counts are from the official answer keys. The combined paper PDF prints 122 questions (all five optional sections), but each candidate answers only 65: GA, Chemistry and the two optional sections chosen during the exam.
What eight papers can — and cannot — tell you
Eight years of papers is a good sample of how GATE XL examiners think: which chapters they return to, how they turn a textbook fact into a two-mark question, and how hard a numerical-answer question usually is. Reading all eight on one topic, side by side, is the fastest way to learn what "GATE level" means for that topic.
What they cannot tell you is what 2027 will ask. Each paper is set by a different organising institute with a different committee, the syllabus has now changed, and the mix of question types moves from year to year — Biochemistry went from three numerical questions in 2025 to six in 2026. Be wary of anyone who predicts exact weightages from old papers. Use them to learn the style and depth, and let the 2027 syllabus decide what you study.
One more practical point: the older papers were written for a slightly different candidate pool. The number of candidates who appeared for XL rose from about 29,600 in 2023 to over 40,000 in 2025 and 2026 (official statistical reports), and the qualifying mark moved with it. Qualifying marks have not moved in one direction — General was 32.9 in 2023, 29.3 in 2024, 31.3 in 2025 and 36.3 in 2026 — so a score that was comfortable on an older paper is no guarantee in 2027. Treat the last three papers as your truest rehearsal.
How to use old papers now the syllabus has changed
Skip these in old Biochemistry papers (removed in 2027)
- Immune-system theory: innate and adaptive immunity, complement, MHC, B- and T-cell receptors and activation. (Immunological techniques such as ELISA, RIA and flow cytometry are still in.)
- Mass spectrometry and DNA microarrays.
New to the 2027 syllabus — recent papers will rarely test them, so practise them separately
- Chemistry: bioinorganic chemistry (haemoglobin, myoglobin, haemocyanin, Fe–S proteins, carbonic anhydrase, Cu–Zn SOD) and nucleophilic aromatic substitution.
- Biochemistry: two-substrate kinetics, Henderson–Hasselbalch problems, metabolic disorders, hormonal regulation of metabolism.
- Botany: the nine named families, plant peptide hormones, calcium signalling, bioinformatics and statistics.
- Microbiology: CRISPR–Cas, quorum sensing, sporulation.
- Food Technology: non-thermal processing, D/Z/F values, probiotics, adulteration, microplastics, FSSAI/Codex/ISO.
Mark yourself the way GATE does
Self-marking an old paper without negative marks flatters you, sometimes by several marks. Use the real rules: +1 or +2 for a correct answer; −1/3 for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and −2/3 for a wrong 2-mark MCQ; nothing lost on a wrong MSQ or NAT; and an MSQ scores only if you picked every correct option and no wrong one.

Two things stand out in an attempt like this. The nine wrong MCQs cost more than four marks — the difference between two score bands in a competitive year. And the five MSQs that were "nearly right" earned nothing at all. Both are fixable habits, and a mock marked honestly is the only place you will see them.
A three-pass method
Pass 1 — by topic (October–November)
- While you study a chapter, pull every question on that chapter from all eight papers and answer them together. Eight years of questions on one topic shows you what the examiners keep asking.
Pass 2 — by paper, untimed (late November)
- Take the 2021, 2022 and 2023 papers section by section with no clock. Mark every question you could not do and why.
Pass 3 — timed, full length (December–January)
- Save the three most recent papers (2024, 2025, 2026) for full three-hour attempts on a computer screen, using only an on-screen calculator. They are the closest to what you will face.
- Mark yourself from the official key, including negative marks on wrong MCQs.

Where can I download GATE XL previous year papers?
The official GATE 2027 website run by IIT Madras hosts GATE Life Sciences question papers and answer keys from 2019 to 2026 on its Download page, free of charge. Direct links for every year are on this page.
Are answer keys available for old GATE XL papers?
Yes. Official answer keys are available for 2021 to 2026 as separate files. For 2019 and 2020 the answer key is printed at the end of the question paper PDF.
Are GATE XL previous papers still useful after the 2027 syllabus change?
Yes, for most topics. Skip questions on removed topics, mainly immune-system theory, mass spectrometry and DNA microarrays in Biochemistry, and practise the new 2027 topics separately because no old paper covers them.
How many questions are in the GATE XL paper?
The full paper has 122 questions: 10 General Aptitude, 17 Chemistry and 19 in each of five optional sections. Each candidate answers 65 of them, because only two optional sections are attempted.
What does XL-P, XL-Q and so on mean in old papers?
They are the old section codes: XL-P Chemistry, XL-Q Biochemistry, XL-R Botany, XL-S Microbiology, XL-T Zoology and XL-U Food Technology. From 2027 they are called XL0 to XL5 in the same order.
