IIT Madras is the organizing institute for GATE 2027 and released the official notification and brochure on 20 July 2026 at gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The exam, covering 30 papers including Life Sciences (XL), will be a computer-based test held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027.

GATE 2027 registration, originally planned for 14 August 2026, was postponed; the GOAPS application portal opened on 27 August 2026 and is open now. Regular registration (no late fee) closes 27 September 2026, with an extended late-fee window until 5 October 2026. DigiLocker registration and live facial verification are also now mandatory.

The GATE 2027 syllabus was revised across all papers for the first time in five years to align with current industry needs; a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper was introduced, and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) became a sectional paper within Engineering Sciences (XE).

The official GATE 2027 XL (Life Sciences) combined syllabus confirms a common XL0 Chemistry section — covering atomic structure, bonding, s/p/d-block elements, bioinorganic chemistry, chemical equilibria, electrochemistry, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, organic reaction mechanisms and biomolecule chemistry — plus five optional sections: Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology and Food Technology.

Each GATE 2027 XL optional section spans about ten topic sub-areas: Biochemistry covers metabolism, gene expression and analytical techniques; Botany covers plant systematics through genome editing; Microbiology covers taxonomy through metagenomics; Zoology covers genetics through animal behaviour; and Food Technology covers food chemistry, microbiology, processing and food engineering.

GATE 2027 will be organised by IIT Madras, with the official notification expected in the last week of July 2026. Registration on the GOAPS portal is reported to open around August 24, 2026 and close on September 29, 2026, with a late-fee window until October 13, 2026. Treat every date as tentative until the brochure is out.

The GATE 2027 exam, covering all 30 papers including XL Life Sciences, is expected on February 6, 7, 13 and 14, 2027, in a forenoon session from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and an afternoon session from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The XL paper date will be confirmed in the official schedule.

XL keeps its sectional structure: General Aptitude plus the compulsory Chemistry section XL-P, after which candidates choose two optional sections worth 60 marks in total from Biochemistry (XL-Q), Botany (XL-R), Microbiology (XL-S), Zoology (XL-T) and Food Technology (XL-U). The paper carries 100 marks over three hours.

The reported GATE 2027 fee is Rs 2000 per paper for General, OBC and EWS candidates and Rs 1000 for SC, ST, PwD and women candidates, doubling for a two-paper combination. Anyone in the third year or higher of an undergraduate degree is eligible to register.

Life Sciences aspirants should confirm the XL syllabus, optional-section combinations and exam-day timetable from the GATE IIT Madras official portal once the GATE 2027 information brochure is released, since only the brochure is authoritative on syllabus changes.
