Checked 25 September 2026. Based on the official GATE 2027 syllabus and question paper pattern, both fixed for the February 2027 exam.
Every GATE Life Sciences candidate writes the same 40 marks — General Aptitude and XL0 Chemistry — and then picks two of five optional sections for the other 60. That choice decides most of your score, and it is usually made by default: "I did B.Sc. Microbiology, so Microbiology and… something."
This guide makes that choice deliberately. It uses the official 2027 syllabus to show which sections overlap (so one month of study counts twice), what each section rewards, and one detail from the IIT Madras brochure that changes how you should prepare: you choose your two sections during the exam, after seeing the questions.
How the sections are scored
| Part | Questions | Marks | Split | Compulsory? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 10 | 15 | 5 × 1-mark, 5 × 2-mark | Yes |
| XL0 Chemistry | 17 | 25 | 9 × 1-mark, 8 × 2-mark | Yes |
| Optional section (each) | 19 | 30 | 8 × 1-mark, 11 × 2-mark | Choose 2 of XL1–XL5 |
Two things follow from those numbers. First, each optional section carries eleven 2-mark questions — 22 of its 30 marks — so a section in which you can solve multi-step problems is worth more than one in which you merely recognise terms. Second, your two optional sections together are 60 of 100 marks: more than GA and Chemistry combined.
You pick your sections inside the exam hall
What the IIT Madras brochure says
- You may attempt at most two of XL1–XL5, and you select them during the exam, after the paper opens.
- To switch to a different section, you must first de-select one you chose. De-selecting deletes every answer you gave in that section, and the screen warns you before it does.

This is an option, not a strategy. It is useful only if you have genuinely prepared a third section well enough to switch to it — and switching late in the paper costs you the time and the answers already spent. The practical rule: prepare two sections properly, and treat any third section as insurance you use only if one of your two looks unusually hard in the first ten minutes.
Where the five sections overlap
The overlaps below are read directly off the official 2027 syllabus. Where two sections list the same topic, one round of preparation serves both.
| Pair | Shared syllabus | Overlap |
|---|---|---|
| Biochemistry + Microbiology | Metabolism (glycolysis, TCA, PPP, oxidative phosphorylation, photosynthesis, Calvin cycle), gene expression and its regulation, DNA repair, PCR, antigen–antibody methods | High |
| Biochemistry + Zoology | Biomolecules, replication/transcription/translation, Krebs cycle, glycolysis, enzyme catalysis, hormones, cell structure and organelles | High |
| Botany + Zoology | Mendelian genetics, linkage and mapping, cell cycle, evolution and speciation, ecology, biogeochemical cycles, conservation, model organisms | High |
| Microbiology + Food Technology | Microbial growth and death kinetics, sterilisation, food spoilage organisms, toxins and pathogens (Salmonella, Clostridium, Bacillus and others), fermentation | Medium–high |
| Biochemistry + Botany | Photosynthesis, respiration, biomolecule structure, enzyme kinetics, nitrogen metabolism | Medium |
| Biochemistry + Food Technology | Carbohydrate, protein and lipid chemistry, enzymes and inhibition kinetics, vitamins and nutrition | Medium |
| Botany + Microbiology | Plant–microbe interactions, nitrogen fixation, microbial ecology, CRISPR tools | Low–medium |
| Zoology + Food Technology | Very little beyond basic biochemistry and nutrition | Low |
| Biochem | Botany | Micro | Zoology | Food Tech | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biochem | — | Medium | High | High | Medium |
| Botany | Medium | — | Low–med | High | Low |
| Micro | High | Low–med | — | Medium | Med–high |
| Zoology | High | High | Medium | — | Low |
| Food Tech | Medium | Low | Med–high | Low | — |
Darker = more shared syllabus. Read off the official 2027 section texts.
Microbiology + Zoology share immunology, genetics and cell biology (medium); Botany + Food Technology share only economic botany and plantation-crop processing (low).
Chemistry (XL0) also overlaps with Biochemistry more than with any other section: its Chemistry of Biomolecules, Reaction Kinetics (including enzyme inhibition) and new Bioinorganic Chemistry sections are close to XL1 material. A Biochemistry candidate revises XL0.4, XL0.7 and XL0.10 largely for free — GATE does not publish marks per subsection, so how much that is worth varies by paper.
Find your best pair in thirty seconds
Rate how strong you are in each section, from 0 (never studied it) to 5 (your strongest subject). The tool adds your two ratings for every possible pair and gives a bonus to pairs that share a lot of syllabus, because shared syllabus means one round of study counts twice.
GATE XL section-pair finder
Be honest — rate what you could answer today, not what your degree was called.
Overlap bonuses: 2 for high overlap, 1.5 medium–high, 1 medium, 0.5 low–medium, 0 low — taken from the overlap grid above. The bonus never outweighs a genuine difference in strength of two points or more.
What each section rewards
XL1 Biochemistry
- Rewards quantitative thinking: enzyme kinetics up to two substrates, Henderson–Hasselbalch buffer problems, spectroscopy.
- Restructured in 2027 (compared with the official 2026 syllabus): immune-system theory removed, metabolic disorders and hormonal regulation added.
- Best for: B.Sc./M.Sc. Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology.
XL2 Botany
- Rewards breadth and memory: taxonomy with nine named families, anatomy, plant physiology, hormones, pathology, economic botany.
- Only additions in 2027, so a 2026 plan needs topping up rather than rebuilding.
- Best for: B.Sc. Botany, Plant Sciences, Agriculture.
XL3 Microbiology
- Rewards mechanism-level understanding: metabolism, genetics (transformation, conjugation, transduction), pathogenesis, antibiotics.
- Small, clean changes in 2027 (CRISPR–Cas, quorum sensing, sporulation added).
- Best for: B.Sc. Microbiology, Biotechnology, Medical Lab Technology.
XL4 Zoology
- Rewards conceptual biology: evolution, genetics, developmental biology, physiology, behaviour.
- Almost unchanged in 2027 — the most stable section to prepare.
- Best for: B.Sc. Zoology, Life Sciences.
XL5 Food Technology
- Rewards engineering-style numericals: mass and energy balance, heat and mass transfer, D/Z/F values — much of it closer to chemical engineering than to biology.
- Gained the most new topics in 2027 (non-thermal processing, probiotics, adulteration, new standards), by our count against the 2026 syllabus.
- Best for: B.Tech/B.Sc. Food Technology, Dairy Technology, Food Science.
Question counts from the official GATE 2026 XL answer key (IIT Guwahati). Biochemistry had the most numerical-answer questions; Zoology the most multiple-select.
The question mix matters for choice as well as for strategy. A section heavy in numerical-answer questions (Biochemistry in 2026, with six) rewards candidates who are comfortable calculating — kinetics, buffer pH, yields — and punishes those who revise by recognition. A section heavy in multiple-select questions (Zoology, with seven) rewards precise knowledge, because an MSQ scores only if every correct option is chosen and no wrong one is. Neither carries negative marking. In 2026 that was 7 or 8 of 19 questions in most sections — about four in ten — and 11 of 19 in Biochemistry (58%). But no risk is not the same as worth guessing: a numerical answer can be attempted on partial working, while an MSQ scores only if you pick every correct option and no wrong one, so a random MSQ guess almost never pays.
Pairings, by background
| Your degree | Strong pair | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Biochemistry / Molecular Biology | Biochemistry + Microbiology | Largest shared syllabus; XL0 overlap is a bonus |
| Biotechnology | Biochemistry + Microbiology | Covers most of a biotech curriculum |
| Microbiology | Microbiology + Biochemistry | Same as above, from the other side |
| Botany | Botany + Zoology | Genetics, evolution and ecology count twice |
| Zoology / Life Sciences | Zoology + Biochemistry | XL4.4 and XL4.5 are close to XL1 |
| Food Technology | Food Technology + Microbiology | Food Microbiology (XL5.2) is one of the four XL5 subsections |
These are defaults, not rules. If your degree covered one section only lightly — many B.Sc. Biotechnology programmes teach little plant anatomy, for instance — pick by what you have actually studied, not by what the degree is called.
A ten-minute test before you commit
Do this once, this week
- Take one recent GATE XL question paper from the official site.
- For each of the five optional sections, read only the 2-mark questions and mark each "can solve", "could solve with revision" or "no idea". Do not solve them.
- Count "can solve" + "could solve with revision" per section. Your two highest counts are your two sections — unless the overlap table above points to a pair that is one or two questions behind but shares twice the syllabus.
Skip any question on a topic removed in 2027 (see our syllabus-changes guide).
Practise it, don't just read it
Once you have chosen, the next step is to find your weak topics inside those two sections.
The ProSyllabus GATE XL library maps onto the 2027 syllabus like this: Enzyme Kinetics Parameters and Lineweaver–Burk Plot Analysis → XL1.2 and XL0.7; Cell Membrane Transport → XL1.5 and XL3.4; Operon Regulation Mechanisms → XL3.9 and XL1.6; Mendelian Inheritance Patterns → XL2.5 and XL4.3. Ten questions each, a worked explanation for every option, and a free AI report on where you lost marks. Topics new in 2027 are not in the library yet — use the syllabus and your textbooks for those.
How many optional sections do I have to answer in GATE XL?
Two of the five (the brochure says at most two; answering fewer is allowed but leaves up to 30 marks unclaimed): Biochemistry (XL1), Botany (XL2), Microbiology (XL3), Zoology (XL4) and Food Technology (XL5). Chemistry (XL0) and General Aptitude are compulsory.
Do I choose GATE XL sections in the application form?
No. According to the GATE 2027 brochure you select your two optional sections during the exam, after the paper opens. De-selecting a section to switch deletes the answers you gave in it.
Which is the easiest GATE XL combination?
No section is officially easier, and difficulty changes from year to year. What you can control is overlap: Biochemistry with Microbiology, Biochemistry with Zoology, and Botany with Zoology share the most syllabus, so preparation for one counts towards the other.
Is Food Technology a good GATE XL option for biology students?
Only if you are comfortable with engineering numericals. Its Food Engineering part covers mass and energy balance, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer and unit operations, which most biology degrees do not teach.
How many marks is each GATE XL optional section?
Thirty marks each, from 19 questions: eight 1-mark and eleven 2-mark questions. The two sections together are 60 of the 100 marks.
