Checked 28 September 2026. From the official 2026 admission documents of each institute (links below). Rules and cut-offs are set per admission cycle and will change for 2027. Marks equivalents and the “rank” readings are our arithmetic.
GATE Statistics has a small field, about 2,100 candidates, and a reputation for leading nowhere in particular. The admission documents say otherwise. A GATE ST score is accepted for a PhD in Statistics at IIT Kanpur, for M.Tech and research programmes at IISc, for industrial-engineering, operations-research and biomedical programmes at IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur, for a direct interview at ISI Kolkata, in place of CAT for the IIM Ahmedabad PhD, and for 61 programme groups at 26 institutes through CCMT. This guide lists each one from the institute’s own 2026 document, with the scores that were needed and what they meant in marks. The tool below tells you which 2026 thresholds a given score cleared.

Where other pages get this wrong
In GATE ST 2026, 414 candidates qualified; a score of 300 was about rank 440 and a score of 390 (the lowest CCMT last-round figure we list) fell in the 300–400 band, ranks 203–442. A rank of 1,000–1,500 lies below every qualifying score.
Commonly published instead: Statchakravyuh’s “Scope of GATE Statistics 2027” (checked 28 Sep 2026) says “ranks up to 1000–1500 can secure admission” at newer IITs and NITs.

The score finder
Which programmes did your GATE ST score clear in 2026?
Enter a GATE score and your category. The tool lists the 2026 thresholds your score met or beat, from the official IISc, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and CCMT documents, and the nearest ones it missed.
These are different kinds of number: IISc’s are shortlisting cut-offs (you are then tested or interviewed), IIT Bombay’s are the minimum to apply, IIT Kharagpur’s and CCMT’s are where the 2026 merit list stopped. Where only a GEN/OPEN figure was published, the tool compares against it for every category. CCMT closing scores are shared across all GATE papers eligible for that group. Degree conditions apply to every programme; check them before applying.
Use the finder to see the shape, not to decide. The thresholds are of four different kinds, as the note under the tool explains, and every programme has its own degree conditions. Many CCMT groups admit ST only for applicants with an M.Sc in Statistics or “any M.Sc”, and the IIT M.Tech programmes often expect an engineering degree. Check the programme’s own eligibility line first; the score comes second.
IIT Kanpur: the only IIT PhD in Statistics that takes GATE ST
IIT Kanpur publishes a matrix of which GATE papers each programme accepts. Its PhD in Statistics accepts GATE DA, MA or ST; its Mathematics PhD accepts MA only. GATE ST also appears in the lists of several other IIT Kanpur programmes, most of them in computing, cognition and management.
| Level | Programmes accepting GATE ST (IIT Kanpur, 2026) |
|---|---|
| PhD | Statistics; Civil Engineering (Geoinformatics); Cognitive Science; CSE; Economic Sciences; Management Sciences; Intelligent Systems; Kotak School of Sustainability (AI for Sustainability); Photonics Science and Engineering; SPASE |
| M.Tech | Geoinformatics; Cognitive Systems; CSE; CSE (Cybersecurity); Management Sciences; AI for Sustainability; Photonics; SPASE |
| MS (Research) | Cognitive Science; CSE; CSE (Cybersecurity); Intelligent Systems; Photonics |
IIT Kanpur DoAA GATE paper-code matrices for PhD, M.Tech and MS (Research), 2026. Each programme also has degree conditions.
For a science PhD, including Statistics, IIT Kanpur asks for a valid GATE score or JRF (NBHM also counts for Mathematics and Statistics). The requirement is waived for an M.Sc from an IIT, IISER or NIT with a CPI of 8.0 or more. So for many M.Sc Statistics students at those institutes GATE is not the only door, but for everyone else it is one of the few.
IISc Bangalore
IISc lists GATE ST among the papers for three M.Tech programmes and in 13 department blocks of its research (PhD and M.Tech-Research) admissions. The numbers are shortlisting cut-offs: clearing one gets you to IISc’s own test or interview, not a seat.
| Programme (2026) | UR | OBC | EWS | SC | ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M.Tech Computational and Data Sciences | 690 | 600 | 600 | 400 | 400 |
| M.Tech Quantum Technology | 900 | 700 | 700 | 700 | 700 |
| M.Tech Smart Mobility and Logistics Systems | 550 | 500 | 500 | 450 | 450 |
| Research: Mathematics | 685 | 580 | 680 | 400 | 300 |
| Research: Computational and Data Sciences | 580 | 550 | 550 | 420 | 400 |
| Research: Mathematical Sciences division block | 550 | 450 | 450 | 350 | 350 |
IISc M.Tech shortlisting cut-off (4 Apr 2026) and research cut-off (21 Apr 2026). The research blocks are identified by the department heading next to each table; other ST blocks include Climate Change (750 UR), Earth Sciences (500 UR), Public Health (600 UR) and Electrical Engineering (700 UR).
What does 690 mean? On the 2026 ST field it works out to about 54 marks out of 100, by our inversion of the official formula. In 2026 about 31 candidates who appeared scored 50 or more, so the CDS M.Tech shortlist is realistically a top-30 target. The Mathematical Sciences block at 550 was about 44.5 marks.
IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras
| Institute and programme | GATE ST role | 2026 figure |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Bombay, IEOR | One of CS, EC, EE, IN, MA, ST, DA | 650 / 585 / 433 (GN-EWS / OBC / SC-ST-PwD), minimum to apply |
| IIT Bombay, Climate Studies | Accepted | 500 / 450 / 333, minimum |
| IIT Bombay, Biomedical Engineering | Accepted | 400 / 360 / 267, minimum |
| IIT Bombay, Geoinformatics (GNR) | With MA and PH | 350 / 315 / 233, minimum |
| IIT Kharagpur, IM1 Operations Research and Data Analytics | Minor paper | GEN 750 (minor-paper cut-off) |
| IIT Kharagpur, IM Industrial Engineering and Management | Minor paper | GEN 679 (minor) |
| IIT Kharagpur, MM2 Biomedical Engineering | Major paper | GEN 565 (major) |
| IIT Kharagpur, MM1 Medical Imaging and Informatics | Major paper | GEN 522 (major) |
| IIT Madras, MA1 Industrial Mathematics and Scientific Computing | Listed among accepted papers | 879 GEN for engineering-discipline applicants (a row covering several papers, not ST-specific) |
IIT Bombay minimum qualifying cut-off GATE 2026 (TA category); IIT Kharagpur JMP 2026 eligibility and cut-off (GEN columns only; reserved columns did not extract reliably); IIT Madras M.Tech 2026 brochure and cut-off.
Three cautions. First, IIT Bombay’s PDF also uses “ST” for Steel Technology in its metallurgy rows; those are not the GATE Statistics paper, and we have left them out. Second, IIT Kharagpur publishes separate cut-offs for applicants whose GATE paper is the programme’s “major” or “minor” paper, and ST is a minor paper for IM and IM1, which is why those cut-offs are high. Third, IIT Madras’s brochure lists a Statistics degree as a qualifying discipline for its CS1 and DA1 programmes; whether a GATE ST score is accepted there depends on the programme’s paper list, so read it before applying. IIT Bombay’s Mathematics PhD runs its own Statistics written test and interview.
ISI Kolkata and IIM Ahmedabad
ISI’s M.Tech in Quality, Reliability and Operations Research (Statistics stream) offers a direct interview to candidates with a valid GATE Statistics score above a threshold. The 2026 notice does not print the threshold value, and we did not find it elsewhere. The stipend is ₹12,400 a month. ISI’s M.Stat has no GATE route; it admits only through ISI’s own test.
IIM Ahmedabad’s PhD accepts a GATE score in place of CAT, with no restriction on the paper, for its Economics, Human Resource Management, Information Systems, Innovation and Management in Education, and Operations and Decision Sciences areas. The score is valid for three years for this purpose. For a statistician, Operations and Decision Sciences is the obvious fit.
CCMT: 61 groups at 26 institutes
CCMT 2026, the common counselling for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, lists GATE ST for 61 programme groups. 50 of the 61 pair ST with an M.Sc in Statistics or “any M.Sc” as the qualifying degree, so a B.Sc holder has fewer options. The closing scores below are for the OPEN category. They are shared across every GATE paper eligible for that group, so an ST candidate competes with CS, MA and DA candidates in the same list.

CCMT 2026 opening and closing scores (NIC), OPEN category, as filtered by us for groups that list GATE ST. The marks column is our inversion of the official formula on the 2026 ST field; it applies only if your score came from GATE 2026.
From the table above.
Put together with the rank tables, the picture is this. A 2026 ST score of about 400–450, roughly 34–37 marks or a rank of about 150–200, reached the NIT industrial-engineering, operations-research and supply-chain groups by the last round. The NITK data-science group, at 640–724, needed about 51–57 marks, which was about the top 30 in ST (31 candidates scored 50 or more). A qualifying score alone, 350, reached very little.
Practise it, don't just read it
For an IISc or IIT Bombay shortlist you need 50+ marks on a 2026-type paper, and the mathematics and estimation sections are where most of them come from. Start with our Expectation, Variance and Covariance quiz.
The ProSyllabus GATE Statistics library has two topic quizzes today: Expectation, Variance and Covariance (Probability) and Sampling Distributions of Estimators (Joint Distributions and Estimation), each with a worked explanation for every option. For the other sections, work from the official papers and keys linked in our previous-papers guide.
