GATE Statistics PYQ: Topic-Wise Weightage 2023–2026 and Paper PDFs

Checked 28 September 2026. Papers and keys are official (GATE download pages). The section classification, question-type counts and recurring-topic list are ours; each question’s classification is recorded in our working file.

The official GATE site gives you the papers and keys. It does not tell you which parts of the syllabus they test. We went through all 220 Statistics questions of the 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 papers (55 a year, 85 marks), put each into one of the 12 sections of the 2027 syllabus, and checked each answer against the final key. Three blocks come out on top. The mathematics (calculus and matrix theory) carried a steady 19–22 marks every year. Estimation and testing together carried 14–20, and probability with the two distribution sections 19–26. Everything else shares what is left.

Where other pages get this wrong

Averaged over the 2023–2026 papers, Probability (section 3) carried about 10.9% of the 85 Statistics marks, Matrix Theory about 12.6% and Estimation about 11.8%.

Commonly published instead: Careers360’s “GATE Statistics syllabus” page (checked 28 Sep 2026) gives a weightage table with Probability at 20%, Calculus 15%, Matrix Theory 8% and Estimation 8%, without saying which papers it was counted from; its percentages add up to 85%.

Our classification of the official papers and final keys. 19 questions could reasonably sit in a second section (for example a change-of-variable question in Probability or Joint Distributions); we filed each once.

Questions / marks per section, our classification on the 2027 section boundaries.

Read the table as ranges rather than targets. The two mathematics sections have not moved: 7 questions of Matrix Theory every single year, and 6 or 7 of Calculus. Testing of Hypotheses has risen, from 5 marks in 2023 to 9 and 10 in 2025 and 2026. Probability is the most volatile, 13 marks in 2023 and only 5 in 2025. Non-parametric Statistics is the smallest section at 3–4 marks, which puts the new run tests and Kruskal–Wallis in perspective.

Marks out of 85 from the official final keys. General Aptitude (15 marks, all MCQ) is not included.

Negative marking touches only 42–52% of the Statistics marks, the MCQ share. 2025 was the most numerical paper, with 33 NAT marks, but there is no steady drift towards NAT: 2026 went back to 22. MSQ carried 16–25 marks. It has no negative marking, but you must select exactly the correct set of options, so partly right answers score nothing.

Topics that keep coming back

These are topics we found in three or more of the four papers, with question numbers so you can go straight to them in the official PDFs. The counts come from a keyword search of our classification notes, so treat them as a floor.

Question numbers as printed in the official ST papers (Statistics is Q11–Q65). Our classification and keyword search.

The pattern suggests where to put your hours. Testing of hypotheses, and above all the Neyman–Pearson and UMP family, is the single most repeated idea: nine questions in four papers by our search, five of them in 2026 alone. Estimation’s big three (MLE, sufficiency and Cramér–Rao) appear every year. In stochastic processes, Markov chains, the Poisson process and Brownian motion are almost guaranteed a question each.

The official papers and keys

The GATE 2027 download page (IIT Madras) carries every ST paper back to its introduction. Each year has its own file, so there is nothing to cut out. One oddity to know about: the 2023 key follows the master version of the paper, so its MCQ answers cluster on A and C. That is the master order, not a pattern candidates saw, since options were shuffled on screen.

When you write the older papers, mark them against the 2027 syllabus rather than the one they were set on. The 2023 paper’s delta-method question (Q61) is now outside the syllabus, while its Laplace questions (Q26 and Q28) are now inside it. Write 2026 last, closest to the exam, because it has the highest top-candidates’ mean of the four and is the best guide to the current setters.

Joint distributions carried 7–8 marks every year, and sampling distributions of estimators link them to the estimation questions. Our Sampling Distributions of Estimators quiz drills both.

The ProSyllabus GATE Statistics library has two topic quizzes today: Expectation, Variance and Covariance (Probability) and Sampling Distributions of Estimators (Joint Distributions and Estimation), each with a worked explanation for every option. For the other sections, work from the official papers and keys linked in our previous-papers guide.

Which section has the most weightage in GATE Statistics?

By our count of the 2023–2026 papers, Matrix Theory (10.75 marks a paper on average), Calculus (10.25) and Estimation (10.0) carry the most of the 85 Statistics marks, followed by Probability (9.25).

Where can I download GATE ST previous year papers?

From the download page of the GATE 2027 website (IIT Madras). Each year from 2022 to 2026 has its own ST paper and final key.

How many NAT questions are in GATE Statistics?

NAT carried 20 to 33 of the 85 Statistics marks each year from 2023 to 2026; 2025 had the most. NAT answers have no negative marking.

Is there negative marking in GATE ST?

Only on MCQs: −1/3 for a one-mark and −2/3 for a two-mark question. MCQs carried 36 to 44 of the 85 Statistics marks a year.

Which topics repeat in GATE Statistics?

Neyman–Pearson and UMP tests, MLE, sufficiency, MGFs, regression, Markov chains, the Poisson process, Brownian motion and eigenvalues appeared in three or four of the 2023–2026 papers.

Is maths important in GATE Statistics?

Yes. Calculus and Matrix Theory together carried 19–22 of the 85 Statistics marks every year from 2023 to 2026, the steadiest block in the paper.
