Checked 28 September 2026. From the GATE 2027 brochure and ST syllabus, the UPSC IES/ISS 2026 notice and timetable, the JAM 2027 pages and MS syllabus, and DRDO RAC Advt 156. The overlap reading and the chooser are ours. ISS 2027 and JAM MS 2027 question counts are not yet published.
A statistics student in India meets three national exams with overlapping syllabi and very different outcomes. GATE ST leads to M.Tech, research and PhD admissions. UPSC’s Indian Statistical Service (ISS) examination leads to a Group A job as a government statistician. JAM Mathematical Statistics (MS) leads to M.Sc admissions at the IITs. Several coaching pages blur them, especially on jobs. This guide sets the three side by side from their official documents: pattern, syllabus overlap, dates, and what each actually leads to. It ends with a short chooser.

Where other pages get this wrong
In every 2024–2027 recruitment document we reached, exactly one post named GATE Statistics: DRDO Scientist ‘B’, Bio Statistics (Advt 156), one unreserved vacancy. No PSU advert names the ST paper, and UPSC’s ISS examination does not use a GATE score.
Commonly published instead: Sunrise Classes ISS’s “What can you do after clearing GATE Statistics” page (checked 28 Sep 2026) says PSU recruitment through the ST paper “is real” and generally expanding. Statchakravyuh’s “Scope of GATE Statistics 2027” lists PSU, RBI and NSSO routes without citing an advert.

The ISS scheme, and why GATE is not it
UPSC’s notice sets out a written examination of 1,000 marks: General English (100), General Studies (100), Statistics I and II (objective, 200 marks each, 80 questions in two hours) and Statistics III and IV (descriptive, 200 each, three hours; in Statistics IV you choose two of seven sections). Then comes a 200-mark interview. The 2026 notice (No. 07/2026-IES/ISS, dated 11 Feb 2026) had 28 ISS vacancies, a ₹200 fee, and the examination on 19–21 June 2026. Nothing in it uses a GATE score.
| ISS paper | Contents | Overlap with GATE ST |
|---|---|---|
| Statistics I (objective) | Probability, statistical methods, numerical analysis, computing | Large: probability and distributions |
| Statistics II (objective) | Linear models, statistical inference, official statistics | Large on inference and linear models; none on official statistics |
| Statistics III (descriptive) | Sampling techniques, econometrics, applied statistics | Almost none |
| Statistics IV (descriptive) | Two of: OR and reliability, demography, survival analysis, quality control, multivariate, design of experiments, computing (C and R) | Only the multivariate option |

Syllabus overlap, topic by topic
The three syllabi share a probability and inference core, then split. GATE ST is the most mathematical: it has calculus and matrix theory as full sections and goes furthest into theory of estimation, testing and stochastic processes. ISS adds applied material that GATE never asks. JAM MS sits closest to GATE, and since 2027 both include run tests.
| GATE ST 2027 | UPSC ISS | JAM MS 2027 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus and matrix theory | Full sections | Numerical analysis only | About 25% of paper |
| Probability and distributions | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Estimation and testing | Yes, deep | Yes | Yes |
| Stochastic processes | Yes | Limited | Markov, Poisson |
| Non-parametric tests | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Multivariate analysis | Yes | Optional | — |
| Regression / linear models | Yes | Yes | Limited |
| Sampling techniques | No | Yes | No |
| Design of experiments | No | Optional | No |
| Econometrics and time series | No | Yes | No |
| Official statistics, demography | No | Yes | No |
Darker = more of the syllabus.
GATE 2027 ST syllabus, UPSC ISS 2026 syllabus, JAM 2027 MS syllabus; the grading is our reading.
In practice, a GATE ST candidate who has prepared well has most of ISS Statistics I and II covered, and a good start on the multivariate option of Statistics IV. What is left for ISS is substantial: sampling, econometrics, design of experiments, official statistics and demography, plus two descriptive papers that reward writing, not just solving. Going the other way, an ISS aspirant needs to add GATE’s calculus, matrix theory and the harder parts of estimation theory before GATE.
What GATE ST leads to in jobs
The honest answer is: very little so far. The only recruitment post we found in 2024–2027 documents that names the ST paper is DRDO RAC Advt 156, Scientist ‘B’, item 14 “Bio Statistics”: one unreserved vacancy at AFMC Pune, Level 10, needing a first-class master’s in Statistics or Biostatistics plus a “Valid GATE score in Statistics [Paper code :ST]”. DRDO’s next advert (157) had no ST code. Its 31 August 2026 notice says 2027 Scientist ‘B’ posts will again be filled on GATE, but it does not name disciplines yet. No PSU advert we found names ST; the RBI’s statistician grade and MoSPI’s posts go through their own exams or UPSC ISS.
| Route | Uses GATE ST? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| DRDO Scientist ‘B’, Bio Statistics | Yes, in Advt 156 (1 post) | Discipline list for 2027 not yet published |
| PSUs (Maharatna, Navratna, Miniratna) | No advert found | PSU GATE recruitment names engineering papers |
| Indian Statistical Service | No | UPSC’s own examination |
| RBI Grade B (statistics) | No | RBI’s own examination (reported) |

The 14 February problem
JAM 2027’s Mathematical Statistics paper is on Sunday 14 February 2027, 2:30–5:30 pm, and 14 February is also one of the six GATE 2027 days. GATE ST’s own date and session are not yet published; in 2026 it was on a Sunday forenoon. If GATE ST lands on the afternoon of 14 February, you cannot sit both. If it is in the forenoon, you can, but it will be a six-hour day. Register for both if you want both, and check the GATE paper-wise schedule the day it appears on the GATE 2027 site.
Which one should you take?
GATE ST, UPSC ISS or JAM MS? Three questions
Practise it, don't just read it
Whichever exam you choose, the probability core is common to all three. Our Expectation, Variance and Covariance quiz is a quick check of it.
The ProSyllabus GATE Statistics library has two topic quizzes today: Expectation, Variance and Covariance (Probability) and Sampling Distributions of Estimators (Joint Distributions and Estimation), each with a worked explanation for every option. For the other sections, work from the official papers and keys linked in our previous-papers guide.
Is GATE Statistics accepted for PSU jobs?
We found no PSU advert that names the GATE ST paper. The only recent post naming GATE ST is DRDO Scientist ‘B’, Bio Statistics (Advt 156), one vacancy.
Does UPSC ISS use GATE scores?
No. The Indian Statistical Service is recruited through UPSC’s own IES/ISS examination: 1,000 written marks and a 200-mark interview.
What is the difference between GATE ST and JAM MS?
GATE ST leads to M.Tech, research and PhD admissions and is open from the third year of any bachelor’s degree. JAM MS leads to M.Sc admissions. Their statistics syllabi overlap heavily; GATE ST has more advanced theory and full calculus and matrix sections.
Can I write both GATE ST and JAM MS in 2027?
Possibly. JAM MS is on 14 February 2027 in the afternoon, which is also a GATE 2027 day. GATE ST’s date is not yet published; if it falls on the afternoon of 14 February, the two clash.
Is sampling in GATE ST or ISS?
ISS. Sampling techniques are in UPSC ISS Statistics-III and are not in the GATE ST syllabus.
How many vacancies are there in ISS?
UPSC’s 2026 notice listed 28 Indian Statistical Service vacancies (and 16 for the Indian Economic Service).
