ESE differs from most UPSC examinations in that the preliminary stage is not merely a screen: PhysicsWallah reports a merit total of 1,300 made up of 500 at prelims, 600 at mains and 200 at interview, so the January paper stays on the scorecard to the end. The four disciplines are Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, and a candidate may enter only one. Testbook reports the prelims Paper I as covering general studies alongside engineering aptitude, and Paper II as the discipline paper; both are objective. The application fee is Rs 200, with female, SC, ST and PwBD candidates exempt, and the notification of 16 September 2026 confirms that entry is restricted to a single discipline.

Dates and windows

The 2026 prelims and mains dates come from a Press Information Bureau release, which is an official source; the mains result date is reported by coaching and news trackers only, and the two available dates do not agree. The 2027 dates appear both in the UPSC annual calendar of 20 May 2026 and in the notification of 16 September 2026.

What this means for your preparation

The mistake that costs ESE candidates most is treating the preliminary examination the way they would treat a Civil Services prelims, as a gate to be cleared and forgotten. In ESE the prelims marks are carried into the final merit. Five hundred of the 1,300 marks, well over a third, are decided on 31 January 2027 and can never be recovered later. A candidate who scrapes through prelims and then performs strongly at mains starts the interview stage already behind someone who did both well.

Prelims Paper II is the largest single paper

Paper II of the preliminary examination is the chosen engineering discipline for 300 marks over three hours, making it the biggest single paper anywhere in ESE, larger than either of the two 300-mark conventional papers only in that it is answered objectively and therefore scores faster. Paper I, General Studies and Engineering Aptitude, is 200 marks over two hours. Together they are 500 of the 1,300 merit marks. The allocation follows: roughly three fifths of prelims preparation belongs to the discipline paper. Paper I is nonetheless not a throwaway, because it covers engineering aptitude, materials science, ethics, standards and project management alongside general awareness, and a weak Paper I is a permanent 60- or 70-mark handicap that no amount of descriptive writing later can close.

Civil carries nearly half the 2027 posts

Testbook's branch table for the 480 posts gives Civil 219, Electronics and Telecommunication 93, Mechanical 91 and Electrical 77. Civil is therefore 45 per cent of the requisition on its own. That does not make Civil easier, because the civil engineering candidate pool is correspondingly the largest, but it does mean the branch-wise cut-offs move on very different vacancy bases and that comparing a Mechanical cut-off with a Civil one tells you nothing useful. Within Civil the 2027 category split is 109 general, 50 OBC, 28 SC, 17 EWS and 15 ST. Candidates should look up the split for their own branch and category in the notification, since a branch with 77 posts spread across five categories can leave a single-figure pool in some of them.

The conventional papers reward finishing

The main examination on 18 June 2027 is two conventional descriptive papers of 300 marks each in the same discipline. Conventional means derivations, numerical solutions, sketches and design steps written out under time pressure. The characteristic failure at this stage is not ignorance but incompletion: strong candidates lose more marks by leaving questions unattempted than by attempting them imperfectly, because partial credit for a correct method is available and a blank scores nothing. The mains is 600 of the 1,300 merit marks, the largest block in the examination, so the return on timed full-length writing practice between February and June is higher than the return on any further content revision. Start it immediately after 31 January 2027, not in April.

No attempt limit, but a hard age ceiling

Careers360 states there is no limit on the number of attempts at ESE and that a candidate may sit until the age criterion is breached. The age band is 21 to 30 years as on 1 January 2027, with three years' relaxation for OBC candidates and five for SC and ST candidates, as reported by PhysicsWallah and Careerpower. The qualification is a degree in engineering from a recognised university or an equivalent professional qualification in the relevant discipline. Because the ceiling rather than an attempt count is the binding constraint, a general-category candidate typically has a window of a few consecutive cycles, and the practical planning question is how many full 1,300-mark attempts fit inside it rather than how many chances remain.

The services on offer are not interchangeable

PhysicsWallah lists the participating services as the Central Engineering Service, the Central Water Engineering Service, the Indian Railway Management Service, the Indian Defence Service of Engineers and the Central Power Engineering Service. Allocation follows merit rank and the preference order submitted, so the preference form is a decision with a long shadow: it determines whether a successful candidate spends a career in railway operations, defence works, water resources or power. Candidates routinely fill it late and by reputation. 6 October 2026, at 6 pm. The Engineering Services Examination 2027 notification was released on 16 September 2026 and the online application window runs for three weeks from that date. Testbook, Careerpower and PhysicsWallah all report the same window and deadline. The fee is Rs 200 for general and OBC candidates, with female, SC, ST and PwBD candidates exempt.
