Checked 29 September 2026. The coverage areas and books are from DHA's CBT guideline updated September 2026. Salary figures are Indeed's estimates from job postings over the past 36 months and are updated often; the sector figures are Dubai Media Office's for 2025.
DHA publishes two things about what the General Practice exam covers: a list of 12 coverage areas and a list of 10 reference books. It does not publish how many questions come from each area. Any plan that tells you "internal medicine is 35–40%" is quoting a number that is not in DHA's current CBT guideline or its assessment manual. This plan gives the areas eleven weeks (only the two short prevention areas share one), leans on the books DHA names, and leaves the last week for timed mixed practice.
Where other pages get this wrong
DHA's GP exam covers 12 areas, including psychiatry, eye and ENT, epidemiology and evidence-based medicine, and family medicine — and it publishes no weights for any of them.
Commonly published instead: A four-subject split of internal medicine 35–40%, surgery 20–25%, paediatrics 20–25% and obstetrics and gynaecology 15–20% (gulfmedexams).
The CBT guideline lists the 12 areas and the books and says nothing about weights. The assessment manual says only that the result is based on the number of correct answers and the weighting of each domain, without stating the weights (7.2.13). A plan built on the four-subject split skips several listed areas.
The 12-week plan
| Week | Official area (DHA wording) | Read from (DHA's list) | Our quiz to check it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chronic Diseases | Davidson's or Kumar and Clark; Toronto Notes | Cardiovascular and Respiratory; Endocrine, Renal and GI |
| 2 | Acute and/or Common Medical Problems | Harrison's (selected chapters); Toronto Notes | Cardiovascular and Respiratory; Endocrine, Renal and GI; Infectious Disease |
| 3 | Common Pediatric Problems | Nelson Essentials; Bernstein and Shelov | Pediatrics and Child Health |
| 4 | Women Health | Hacker and Moore; Ten Teachers; Llewellyn-Jones; Current OBG | Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women's Health |
| 5 | Emergency Problems | Toronto Notes (emergency section) | Emergency and Acute Care |
| 6 | Common Surgical Problems | Toronto Notes (surgery sections) | None yet |
| 7 | Common Psychiatric Problems | Toronto Notes (psychiatry) | None yet |
| 8 | Common Eye and ENT Problems | Toronto Notes (ophthalmology, otolaryngology) | Dermatology, ENT and Primary Care (ENT only) |
| 9 | Common Derma Problems | Toronto Notes (dermatology) | Dermatology, ENT and Primary Care |
| 10 | Basic Epidemiology and EBM Concepts | Toronto Notes (public health) | None yet |
| 11 | Family Medicine Concepts; Screening and Periodic Health Examination | Toronto Notes (family medicine) | Preventive Medicine and Ethics |
| 12 | Mixed revision and timed practice | Your own notes | All eight, timed |
How the weeks are allocated is our choice, not DHA's: one area a week because DHA gives no reason to favour any, with the two short prevention areas sharing week 11. On our reading, Toronto Notes, a review book organised by specialty, is the broadest single source on DHA's list for surgery, psychiatry, eye, dermatology and public health, and the only one with its own surgery sections, so it carries weeks 5–11. If you are strong in an area, compress its week; do not drop it.
A week can be as simple as: two days reading, two days of questions from that area, one day re-reading what you got wrong, and one timed block of mixed questions from earlier weeks. The exam is 150 questions in 3 hours including registration and the introduction, so from week 6 onward practise at a little over a minute a question.
Four ways a DHA plan goes wrong
| Mistake | Why it costs you | Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Planning around published subject weights | DHA publishes none; a four-subject split drops psychiatry, eye, epidemiology and family medicine | Give every one of the 12 areas time |
| Reading only the big medicine textbooks | They are organised around internal medicine; none of the ten listed books is a surgery text, and eye, psychiatry and public health get little space in the medicine volumes | Use Toronto Notes, the broadest listed review book on our reading, for surgery and the smaller areas |
| Never practising under time | The 3 hours include registration and the introduction | From week 6, timed blocks at a little over a minute a question |
| Treating an attempt as a practice run | Three attempts in a set, counted across the whole UAE, then a two-year DHA block | Book the exam once the tracker is complete |
The last row matters more than it looks. A failed attempt at DHA also counts against you at DOH and MOHAP, so "sit it once to see what it is like" spends one of the three attempts in your set. There are ways back after three fails (one final attempt with a different authority under PQR 1.5.5, or a new set after a new qualification or two years of experience under 1.5.8), but none is quick. There is no waiting period between attempts, but there is no refund for a missed appointment either. Book when your weakest area has had its week and your timed mixed blocks are comfortably clear of 60%, the published pass mark; that threshold is our suggestion, since DHA does not share scores.
Your 12-area tracker
Tick an area when you have read it and done questions on it. The bar is your coverage of the official list, not a predicted score.
0 of 12 done
Ticks are saved only in this browser on this device.
The tracker counts the 12 official areas only. Week 12, the timed 150-question mixed block, is not an area, so it is not on the list: do it once all 12 are ticked.
What our quizzes cover, honestly
| Our quiz | Official area(s) |
|---|---|
| Cardiovascular and Respiratory Medicine | Chronic Diseases; Acute and/or Common Medical Problems |
| Endocrine, Renal and Gastrointestinal Medicine | Chronic Diseases; Acute and/or Common Medical Problems |
| Pediatrics and Child Health | Common Pediatric Problems |
| Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women's Health | Women Health |
| Emergency and Acute Care | Emergency Problems |
| Infectious Disease and Antimicrobials | Not an area on its own; overlaps Acute and/or Common Medical Problems |
| Dermatology, ENT and Common Primary-Care Presentations | Common Derma Problems; the ENT half of Common Eye and ENT Problems |
| Preventive Medicine and Ethics | Screening and Periodic Health Examination; Family Medicine Concepts (partly) |
| No quiz yet | Common Surgical Problems; Common Psychiatric Problems; eye problems; Basic Epidemiology and EBM Concepts |
That last row is the honest part. Our library covers the medicine, paediatrics, women's health, emergency and dermatology areas well, and nothing yet for surgery, psychiatry, ophthalmology or epidemiology. For those weeks, use Toronto Notes and question practice from elsewhere.
Practise it, don't just read it
Use the quizzes as the end-of-week check in the plan above: one quiz after the reading, then again in week 12 under time.
The ProSyllabus DHA GP library has eight 10-question topic quizzes: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Medicine, Endocrine, Renal and Gastrointestinal Medicine, Pediatrics and Child Health, Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Women's Health, Emergency and Acute Care, Infectious Disease and Antimicrobials, Dermatology, ENT and Common Primary-Care Presentations, and Preventive Medicine and Ethics. Each question comes with an explanation.
What GPs earn in Dubai
DHA does not publish a salary scale for General Practitioners; employers set pay. The only current figure we could read in full is Indeed's, which it describes as an average base salary estimated from job postings on Indeed over the past 36 months. It is not a survey of what GPs are paid, and it excludes allowances.
| Figure | Value | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average monthly base salary, GP, Dubai | AED 9,303 | Indeed UAE: 508 salaries reported, from job postings in the past 36 months, updated 20 Sep 2026 | reported |
| Low end of range | AED 4,200 a month | Indeed UAE | reported |
| High end of range | AED 20,604 a month | Indeed UAE | reported |
| Official DHA GP salary scale | None published | — | not found |
Indeed UAE, General Practitioner salaries in Dubai, updated 20 September 2026. Estimated from job postings on Indeed over the past 36 months; base salary only; not DHA figures.
Read the average with care. It is a base salary taken from job adverts, some of them up to three years old, so it says nothing about housing, transport or other allowances, which Gulf offers often quote separately. Before comparing an offer, ask for the full breakdown and whether the licence fee (AED 3,000 for one year on Sheryan) and CPD are paid by the employer.
How big the Dubai market is
| 2024 | 2025 | Measure | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,340 | About 5,800 | Health facilities in Dubai | Dubai Media Office, 18 Feb 2026 (official) |
| 64,100 | Over 69,400 | Private-sector health workforce | Dubai Media Office, 18 Feb 2026 (official) |
| Not published | Not published | Physicians or GPs within that | — |
Dubai Media Office, 18 February 2026. The workforce grew from 64,100 to over 69,400 in the same release.
Once licensed, a physician keeps the licence by earning 40 CPD points a year, counted across the whole term of a multi-year licence (DHA licensing manual 15.3). Plan for it from the first year rather than in the month before renewal.
How long should I prepare for the DHA GP exam?
DHA does not say. This plan uses 12 weeks, which is our choice: eleven for the 12 official areas (two short ones share a week) and one for timed mixed practice; working doctors often need longer.
What are the subject weights in the DHA GP exam?
DHA publishes none. It lists 12 coverage areas and ten books. Percentages you see online are not from DHA.
Which book is most important for the DHA GP exam?
DHA ranks none of them and maps no book to any area. On our reading, Toronto Notes is the broadest single listed source, with sections for surgery, psychiatry, eye and public health.
Are surgery questions in the DHA GP exam?
Yes. Common Surgical Problems is one of the 12 official areas, even though DHA's book list has no surgery textbook.
Is psychiatry in the DHA GP syllabus?
Yes. Common Psychiatric Problems is an official area.
Can I prepare for the DHA and SMLE at the same time?
Largely. DHA's ten books are the same titles and editions as on the SMLE list, which adds Lissauer's paediatrics textbook, three surgery books (Cameron, Bailey and Love, Mont Reid) and four patient-safety, prevention and ethics references. The exam formats and pass rules differ.
How much does a GP earn in Dubai?
Indeed reports an average base salary of AED 9,303 a month from 508 salaries, with a range of AED 4,200 to 20,604 (updated 20 September 2026). Indeed estimates these from job postings over the past 36 months; they are not DHA data and exclude allowances.
Does DHA set GP salaries?
No official DHA GP salary scale was found. Employers set pay.
How many CPD points does a DHA-licensed GP need?
40 a year, cumulative across a multi-year licence.
Is the Dubai health sector growing?
Dubai Media Office reported about 5,800 facilities in 2025, up from 5,340, and a private workforce over 69,400, up from 64,100.
How fast do I need to answer?
The exam is 150 questions in 3 hours, and the 3 hours include registration and the introduction, so a little over a minute per question.
Do your quizzes cover the whole DHA GP syllabus?
Not yet. Eight quizzes cover medicine, paediatrics, women's health, emergency, infectious disease, dermatology and ENT, and prevention; surgery, psychiatry, eye and epidemiology have none yet.
