Checked 6 November 2026. On 6 November 2026 the Bank published no dates for its 2027 work experience or insight days. The Mel Beaman Student Programme page still showed the 2026 round. Programme dates for apprenticeships, placements, graduate programmes and PhDs are from pages updated in October 2026. Read on 6 Nov 2026.
The Bank of England does not advertise an open work experience scheme on its careers pages. Its own answer, on the school speakers page (last updated 13 August 2026), is that it "works with social mobility charities to recruit for work experience opportunities or insight days". The one work experience programme it runs and publishes itself is the Mel Beaman Student Programme: four days of hybrid work experience at the Leeds office for Year 12 students from the Leeds area, a year of mentoring, and a chance of a bursary of up to £10,000. The 2026 round closed at 10am on Monday 18 May 2026, and the 2027 round had not been published on 6 November 2026.
Below you will find every way in by age and stage, what the Mel Beaman programme offers and who can apply, how insight days through charities work, what the Bank will not do (such as arrange work experience after a school talk), the outreach open to schools and universities, and which paid programme comes next. A short tool at the end of the routes section suggests where to start.

Quick check: where should you start?
The tool only points you to a starting place; check each programme's full entry rules on the Bank's page before you apply. The Bank accepts only your first application across all its Future Talent programmes, so pick the one that fits your stage (How to apply, 29 October 2026). The Mel Beaman programme sits outside Future Talent, on the Bank's corporate responsibility pages.
The Mel Beaman Student Programme: the Bank's own work experience
The Bank set up the programme in memory of Mel Beaman, a colleague who died suddenly in 2023 and who, in the Bank's words, made significant contributions "to our social mobility agenda". It is aimed at young people from areas of lower social mobility and, so far, has focused on the Leeds area. The programme page (last updated 7 April 2026) lists three parts:
| Part | What the Bank says |
|---|---|
| Work experience | Four days of hybrid work experience: two days in the Leeds office with face-to-face networking, and two days virtual, intended to copy hybrid working. Online presentations, group projects, and skills such as teamwork, planning and communication. You meet staff and hear about their roles |
| Mentoring | Online monthly mentoring for 12 months, one to one with a Bank employee. The mentor guides you through milestones such as further education applications, your personal statement and your CV, with master classes and a chance to meet mentors in person |
| Bursary | One student from the cohort could receive up to £10,000, for higher education costs or for relocating for an apprenticeship. Minimum three Cs at A level and a household income of £30,000 or less |
Who could apply in 2026
These were the 2026 rules. The Bank has changed the target year group once already (Year 13 in the 2024 pilot, Year 12 since 2025), so read the page again when the next round opens.

When does the Mel Beaman programme open?
The 2027 dates were not published on 6 November 2026; the live page still showed the 2026 round. Here is how each round has run, from the page and Wayback Machine copies of it.
| Round | Who it was for | When applications ran | Work experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 (pilot) | Year 13, age 17 to 18 | Closed at 12pm (midday) on Monday 23 September 2024 (page updated 6 September 2024) | Week beginning 28 October 2024 |
| 2025 | Year 12, age 16 to 17 | Open on the page updated 14 April 2025, until 10am on Tuesday 27 May 2025. A September 2025 copy said it "will reopen Q2 2026" | Week beginning 21 July 2025 |
| 2026 | Year 12, age 16 to 17 | Open on the page updated 7 April 2026, until Monday 18 May 2026 at 10am | End of July 2026 |
| 2027 | Not yet published | Not yet published on 6 November 2026 | Not yet published |
Our reading of the last two rounds, not a Bank promise: if the pattern holds, applications would open in spring 2027 and close in May, for students in Year 12 that year, with the work experience in July. Bookmark the programme page and check it from March. The Bank's corporate responsibility page (last updated 26 February 2026) describes the programme as launched in 2024, offering work experience, mentoring and a bursary.
Insight days and work experience through charities
Outside the Mel Beaman programme, the Bank points students to charities. In the FAQ on its school speakers page it says: "The Bank of England works with social mobility charities to recruit for work experience opportunities or insight days." It does not name the charities on that page, and it publishes no dates, places or entry rules for these days. So there is no form on the Bank's site to apply for an insight day.
The Bank does name partners for mentoring. Its corporate responsibility page says it offers mentoring to students and young people through partnerships with the Social Mobility Foundation, the East London Business Association and With Insight Education. That page does not say which, if any, of them place students on Bank insight days, so we do not claim it either.
How to find a Bank of England insight day
- Ask your school or college careers lead which employer-access charities your school works with, and whether any list the Bank of England.
- Read each charity's own programme pages and entry rules, which often depend on things such as your school type or household income.
- Sign up for the Bank's education newsletter, linked from its Education page, and register your interest in its Future Talent programmes for reminders.
- If you live in the Leeds area, check the Mel Beaman Student Programme each spring.
- Our advice: do not ask a Bank Ambassador for a placement after a talk. The Bank says it cannot take requests for work experience following a Bank Ambassador visit (see below).
Bank of England school speakers page (13 August 2026) and corporate responsibility page (26 February 2026). The checklist is our advice.
What the Bank will not do
Three answers in the Bank's FAQ save a lot of wasted emails:
| Question | The Bank's answer |
|---|---|
| Can a Bank Ambassador arrange work experience after a school talk? | No. "Due to the volume of talks we deliver each year across the UK we cannot accommodate requests for work experience following a Bank Ambassadors visit." For apprenticeships, internships, placements and graduate roles, it sends you to the careers pages |
| Can students visit the Bank? | No school visits to the Bank itself. Schools can visit the Bank of England Museum, which offers free educational activities and self-guided visits, and book a free presentation for groups of 15 to 50 students (advance booking essential) |
| Can a Bank Ambassador attend a careers fair? | No, but its talks are designed to support a school's careers programme and the Gatsby Benchmarks |
For teachers: free Bank Ambassador talks
Bank Ambassadors are Bank staff who volunteer to talk to students about the Bank's work, their own role and their career. The school speakers page sets out the rules: the talks are free; state secondary schools, sixth form colleges and further education colleges anywhere in the UK can ask; schools that have not hosted a talk before get priority; and each school can request one talk per academic year. Talks usually last an hour, in school or online on Teams or Zoom, and the Bank asks for requests at least two months ahead. Primary schools, independent schools, charities and youth groups are not covered.
| Talk | Ages | About |
|---|---|---|
| What does the Bank of England do? | 11 to 18 | What the central bank does and how it differs from high street banks |
| Economics in practice | 16 to 18 | Based on A level economics: the work of the Bank's economists on monetary and financial stability |
| Introduction to financial services | 11 to 18 | The UK financial services sector, including careers and opportunities at the Bank |
| Payment technology at the Bank | 11 to 16 | Payment methods, cash and digital, and the technology behind them |
The Bank says it also shares information about its early careers opportunities with the teachers who organise a talk. For a student, a talk is not a route into a placement, but it is a good place to hear what Bank staff do and to ask how they got in.
University students: research projects and paid programmes
Once you are at university, look at the Bank's paid programmes and, for MSc students, the separate Research Support Programme. The summer internship is covered in our Bank of England summer internship guide. The others:
- Placement year in your course: the 13-month Industrial Placement, starting at the end of July 2027 in London or Leeds; 2027 applications close at 12pm GMT on Monday 23 November 2026.
- MSc student: the Research Support Programme offers dissertation projects on the Bank's research priorities. You do not apply yourself: universities register by 31 December 2026, the Bank suggests topics, each university nominates one student per topic in January to February, and the Bank picks one student per project. Support runs from June to September, up to seven hours per project.
- PhD student: the 12-week PhD Internship in London or Leeds; 2027 applications close at 12pm GMT on Monday 11 January 2027.
- Finishing your degree: the graduate programmes open at 12pm GMT on Monday 7 December 2026. See our graduate scheme guide.
- Not going to university yet: the apprenticeships also open at 12pm GMT on Monday 7 December 2026. See our degree apprenticeship guide.

The next step after work experience: the online test
The Bank does not publish a test for work experience or insight days. But its apprenticeships, internships, industrial placements and graduate programmes all use the same process: an application form, then a situational judgement test, a recorded video interview and a virtual assessment centre (How to apply, 29 October 2026). The Bank's test guidance says each scenario has four options; you pick the one you would be most likely and then least likely to do, with no time limit. It measures how closely you fit the Bank's culture and its three Bank Behaviours: act inclusively, drive growth and deliver outcomes. If you later apply for an apprenticeship, internship, industrial placement or graduate programme, this test follows the application form. Try a few free questions:

One practice scenario set during a work experience day. Decide your own most and least likely before you read our reasoning.
Worked example: act inclusively (honesty and integrity)
On your first day in the Bank's Leeds office during a work experience week, a team lets you sit with them. You take a photo of yourself at the desk to post on social media. Looking at it later, you notice two colleagues' screens behind you, with documents and charts that are readable if you zoom in. Nobody has told you the rules on photos.
- A. Post it as it is; the screens are small, and everyone posts photos from work experience.
- B. Hold off posting, ask the Bank colleague looking after you whether photos are allowed, and only share one they are happy with, such as a picture without any screens.
- C. Delete the photo and say nothing to anyone.
- D. Post it only to a private story that your close friends can see.
Our MOST likely: B. It respects that the Bank works with information that is not public, avoids guessing a rule you do not know, and still lets you share your day in a way your host approves. Asking is also a simple way to build trust with the team.
Our LEAST likely: A. It publishes material that may not be public, to anyone, without checking. "Small" screens can be zoomed, and once a post is out you cannot take it back.
The other two: D still shares the screens outside the Bank without permission; a private story is not the same as no audience. C is safe, but it misses the chance to learn the rule and to post something you are allowed to, so it sits in the middle.

Making the most of work experience at the Bank
Our advice
- Keep notes each day: who you met, what their team does and one thing that surprised you. These become your examples on a later application form.
- Ask people how they joined the Bank and which route they would choose now; their answers help you pick yours.
- Learn the three Bank Behaviours (act inclusively, drive growth, deliver outcomes) before you go, and notice them in action.
- Ask before you share anything: photos, documents or details of what you saw.
- Write a short thank-you to your host or mentor, and ask whether you can keep in touch.
- Register your interest in the Future Talent programmes, so you hear when applications open.
Our advice, not Bank guidance.
Applying for an apprenticeship or internship next? Practise the online test
The Bank publishes no test for work experience, but its apprenticeships, internships, placements and graduate programmes all include a situational judgement test after the application form. The free questions above are the start of our Bank of England Situational Judgement Test Practice: ten scenario sets mapped to the three published Bank Behaviours, in the most and least likely format the Bank describes, every option explained, and one practice mock.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Bank of England offer work experience?
Yes, but not through an open scheme on its careers pages. It says it works with social mobility charities to recruit for work experience opportunities and insight days, and it runs its own Mel Beaman Student Programme: four days of hybrid work experience in Leeds for Year 12 students from the Leeds area, with a year of mentoring.
Does the Bank of England do work experience for Year 10 or Year 11?
We found nothing on the Bank's own pages for students under Year 12. For younger students it offers outreach instead: free Bank Ambassador talks for state schools, the Bank of England Museum and classroom resources.
How do I get work experience at the Bank of England in Year 12?
Two ways. If you live in the Leeds area and meet the income and school rules, apply for the Mel Beaman Student Programme when it opens (the 2026 round closed on 18 May 2026). Otherwise, look for insight days and work experience through social mobility charities: ask your school careers lead which charities your school works with.
What is the Mel Beaman Student Programme?
The Bank's own student programme, set up in memory of a colleague. It offers four days of hybrid work experience (two in the Leeds office, two virtual), a year of one-to-one online mentoring, and a bursary of up to £10,000 for one student from the cohort. In 2026 it was for Year 12 students from the Leeds area at state schools, with a household income of £30,000 or less.
When does the Mel Beaman Student Programme open for 2027?
The Bank had not published the 2027 dates on 6 November 2026. In 2026 the page said applications were open until Monday 18 May at 10am, with the work experience at the end of July. In 2025, applications were open in April and closed at 10am on Tuesday 27 May, and the work experience was in the week of 21 July.
Does the Bank of England run insight days?
Yes, through social mobility charities, according to the Bank's school speakers page. The Bank does not name the charities or publish dates for these days, so there is no form to apply for one on its site.
Can a Bank Ambassador get me work experience after a school talk?
No. The Bank says that, because of the number of talks it gives across the UK, it cannot take requests for work experience after a Bank Ambassador visit.
Can my school visit the Bank of England?
Not the Bank itself. Schools can visit the free Bank of England Museum and book a free presentation there for groups of 15 to 50 students. State secondary schools and colleges can also request one free Bank Ambassador talk a year.
Is there work experience at the Bank of England for university students?
Yes, as paid programmes: the Summer Internship, the 13-month Industrial Placement and, for PhD students, the PhD Internship. MSc students can work on a dissertation project through the Research Support Programme if their university takes part.
Is there a test for Bank of England work experience?
The Bank does not publish a test for work experience or insight days. Its apprenticeships, internships, placements and graduate programmes all use an application form, followed by an online situational judgement test, a video interview and a virtual assessment centre.
