Checked 1 November 2026. On 1 November 2026 the Bank's live pages named its graduate programmes and invited registrations for 2027 but had not published 2027 dates, salaries, streams or entry rules; it says it will update its pages in autumn 2026. Every figure here is labelled with the round it comes from. Read on 1 Nov 2026.
On 1 November 2026 the Bank of England had not opened its 2027 graduate round or published its 2027 dates and salaries. Its graduate page names the Graduate Development, Trainee Solicitor and Actuarial programmes, and its Future Talent page says the 2026 round has closed and that the programme pages will be updated in autumn 2026, ahead of the 2027 round, with programme structure and entry criteria. Until then you can register your interest for 2027. In the last round (2026 start) the Graduate Development Programme paid £33,525 a year and recruited for Leeds only; the round before paid £36,500 in London and £32,750 in Leeds.
The Bank's How to apply page (updated 11 December 2025) sets out the process for apprentices, interns, industrial placements and graduates: an application form, then three assessed stages (a situational judgement test, a one-way video interview and a virtual assessment centre). This guide sets out what is known for 2027, the salaries, streams and entry rules of the last two rounds, when the last applications closed, why there is no official acceptance rate, what the Bank says about its online Excel test, and how to prepare for each stage.

When does the 2027 round open, and what is the deadline?
The Bank's pages give no fixed annual recruitment calendar, and on 1 November 2026 no 2027 opening date or deadline had been announced. What its own pages show about the last round (for programmes starting in 2026):
| Update date printed on the Bank page | What the Bank's page said |
|---|---|
| 4 Nov 2025 | Apprenticeship and graduate information still based on the 2024/25 round; check back in late November for 2025/26 |
| 12 Nov 2025 | Industrial Placement applications for 2026 open, closing at 12pm (midday) on Monday 24 November 2025 |
| 15 Jan 2026 | Graduate information still based on the 2024/25 round |
| 16 Feb 2026 | The 2025/26 recruitment round is now closed |
| 19 Feb 2026 | Graduate Development Programme for September 2026 described (Leeds only, £33,525); applications closed, register for 2027 |
| 15 Apr 2026 | The 2026 round has closed; pages to be updated in autumn 2026 ahead of the 2027 round |
The dates above are the update dates printed on each Bank page (the copies were captured by the Wayback Machine a few days to weeks later). They show that the 2025/26 round was described as closed in the 16 February 2026 update, but these copies do not show the exact graduate opening date, closing date or how long applications were open. The practical step is to register your interest and prepare for the online test before the 2027 pages go live. On the video interview stage the Bank says it notifies successful applicants two weeks after the application deadline.
Bank of England graduate salary
The Bank publishes a salary on each programme page for the round it describes. These are the figures from its last two rounds; no 2027 salary had been published on 1 November 2026.
| Programme | Start 2026 (2025/26 round) | Start 2025 (2024/25 round) |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate Development Programme | £33,525 (Leeds only) | London £36,500; Leeds £32,750 |
| Trainee Solicitor Development Programme | £40,000 (London) | £39,000 (London) |
| Actuarial Development Programme | Not open in this round | £36,500 (London) |
| Industrial Placement (undergraduate, 13 months) | London £25,250; Leeds £22,940 | £25,000 (London) |
Gross annual base salary as published on the Bank's Graduate programmes page for each round (2024/25 and 2025/26). No 2027 figures yet.
Alongside base pay the Bank lists a discretionary, non-pensionable annual cash award for performance, a defined-benefit, non-contributory career average pension, 26 days' annual leave with the option to buy more, private medical insurance and a Benefits+ scheme. All colleagues are expected to spend 50% of their time in the office (What we offer you).
Worked example 1: what £33,525 means each month
- £33,525 ÷ 12 = £2,793.75 a month gross, before income tax, National Insurance and anything else deducted. (Our arithmetic.)
- Against the previous round's Leeds figure of £32,750, that is £775 a year more; against the previous London figure of £36,500 it is £2,975 a year less. (Our arithmetic.)
- The pension is non-contributory, so the Bank does not take a pension contribution from your pay.
Figures are gross annual salaries from the Bank's Graduate programmes page for each round. Take-home pay depends on your tax position.
Programmes and streams
The streams change from round to round. In the 2025/26 round the Graduate Development Programme recruited for Leeds only and offered two streams; the 2024/25 round offered six streams across London and Leeds.
| Stream | 2025/26 round (2026 start) | 2024/25 round (2025 start) |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Yes: role in the Authorisations, Regulatory Technology and International Supervision Directorate | Yes (London and Leeds) |
| Risk | Yes: Strategic Change and Operations, Payments Directorate or Prudential Policy | Yes (London and Leeds) |
| Operations | Not offered | Yes: open to all degree disciplines |
| Technology | Not offered | Yes: no computer science degree needed |
| Supervision | Not offered | Yes (London and Leeds) |
| Postgraduate | Not offered | Yes: for a master's in economics or finance |
In the first 12 months graduates take a foundation year covering the breadth of the Bank's work. For the 2026 start, the second year offered the chance to study for a master's in Global Central Banking and Financial Regulation with Warwick Business School. The Bank's London offices are at Threadneedle Street and Moorgate, and it also has a Leeds city centre office (Our locations).
How hard is it to get in? (The acceptance rate question)
We found no official acceptance rate. We checked the Bank's Future Talent, graduate programme and How to apply pages and its Annual Reports for 2025 and 2026: none gives an acceptance rate or the number of applications or offers for the graduate programmes. Treat any percentage you see on a forum or prep site as unverified unless it links to an official Bank source.
What the Bank does publish: one application per candidate across all its Future Talent programmes; the Disability Confident scheme, under which candidates who choose to apply through it and meet the minimum requirements of the job description are fast-tracked to the video interview, with their test score not considered; and, in its 2025 Annual Report, a diversity target for 10% of its graduate intake to be Black (including mixed ethnic background). The part you control is the stages: the Bank says that if you pass the online test you move on to the next assessed stage, so for most applicants the situational judgement test decides whether you reach the video interview.
Is there an online Excel test? Published for two placement streams
The How to apply page says: if you apply to the Economist or Data streams of the Industrial Placement programme, you will be asked to complete an online Excel test. The Industrial Placements page (12 November 2025) adds that it is part of the assessment centre for the Data and Economics streams. The Bank's graduate pages for the last two rounds do not mention an Excel test, though the graduate Data stream lists Excel, Python and R among the skills you could develop.
The Bank does not publish the test's length, format or the functions it covers. Preparing the core spreadsheet skills an economics or data analyst uses every day is the sensible approach: clean formulas, absolute and relative references, SUMIFS and AVERAGEIFS, XLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH, percentage change, a quick pivot table and a clear chart.
Worked example 2: an illustrative spreadsheet task (our own, not the Bank's test)
- Task: column A holds 12 months, column B a price index (B2:B13). Work out the percentage change from month 1 to month 12.
- Formula: =(B13/B2)-1, formatted as a percentage. If B2 is 104.0 and B13 is 107.9, the answer is 107.9 ÷ 104.0 − 1 = 3.75%. (Our arithmetic.)
- Follow-up: the average monthly level with =AVERAGE(B2:B13), and the highest month with =INDEX(A2:A13, MATCH(MAX(B2:B13), B2:B13, 0)).
- Check your work: if a result looks surprising, go back to the underlying data and check every cell reference before you trust it.
An illustration of the kind of skill involved. The Bank has not published sample Excel test questions.
The three assessed stages
| Stage | What the Bank says |
|---|---|
| Application form | Register, confirm eligibility, give your background, education and work experience, upload your CV and answer free-text questions about you and your motivations. Your answers are considered throughout the process |
| 1. Situational judgement test | Scenarios reflecting working life at the Bank; it gauges what you would do and how closely you align with its values. Pass to move on |
| 2. Video interview | Recorded and reviewed later. A short time to think after each question, then a set time limit; the recording stops at the limit and you cannot re-record |
| 3. Virtual assessment centre | One group exercise and one interview, with motivation, behaviour-based and analytical or technical questions |
| Pre-employment checks | References, security clearance, identity, criminal record and credit checks, proof of qualifications, immigration clearance where relevant, and a medical questionnaire |
The Bank assesses against its three Bank Behaviours: act inclusively, drive growth and deliver outcomes. It recommends the STARR method (situation, task, action, result, reflection) for interview answers and asks you not to use AI tools during the video interview, live interview or group exercise. Our Bank of England interview questions and answers guide maps model answers to each Behaviour, the video interview questions guide covers the timed recorded stage, and the assessment centre group exercise guide includes a free sample brief with roles.
All staff need National Security Vetting, which the Bank says usually takes three to four weeks after an offer but can take longer; do not hand in your notice before clearance. If you have lived outside the UK in the last five years, give full details: for some countries the Bank cannot complete the checks. For graduate programmes the Bank may sponsor a visa case by case, but the applicant pays the Skilled Worker visa fee and the immigration health surcharge.
Which programme should you apply for?
Worked example 3: choosing your one application
- Undergraduate in the penultimate or final year of your degree: the Bank's summer internships are designed for you (Internships page); the graduate scheme is for students finishing or recently finished.
- Undergraduate whose course allows a placement year: the 13-month Industrial Placement, if you expect a 2.1, do not already hold a degree and have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels or equivalent (2025/26 round; the Economist stream had its own degree rules). The Data and Economics streams include the online Excel test.
- Final-year student or recent graduate expecting a 2.1: the Graduate Development Programme, provided you have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels or equivalent.
- Law route: the Trainee Solicitor Development Programme, if (2025/26 rules) you have or are predicted, no more than three years before the start date, a 2.1 UK law degree, a 2.1 non-law degree plus a PGDL, or a non-UK law degree plus a PGDL from a UK university; have not completed the LPC or SQE1 or SQE2; and meet the Solicitors Regulation Authority character and suitability requirements.
- The Bank accepts only your first application across all Future Talent programmes, so pick the one that fits your stage before you start the form.
Entry rules from the Bank's programme pages for the 2025/26 round. The 2027 rules are published when the pages are updated.
Common mistakes
- Assuming last year's streams and locations will return. The 2026 start was Leeds only with two streams; check the 2027 pages when they go live.
- Applying to two programmes. Only your first application is accepted.
- Treating the situational judgement test as a formality. It is the first gate, and it tests fit with the Bank Behaviours.
- Rehearsing word-for-word video answers. You cannot re-record, the recording stops at the time limit, and the Bank says scripted answers get you less far than genuine examples.
- Handing in notice before security clearance is granted.
- Planning around an "acceptance rate" from a forum. We found no official figure.
