Bank of England Summer Internship 2027: Dates, Pay, Stages and Tests

Checked 6 November 2026. On 6 November 2026 the Bank's Summer Internships page said 2027 applications open in November 2026, without a date, closing date, salary, entry rules or business areas. Every figure here is labelled with the round it comes from. Read on 6 Nov 2026.

Applications for the Bank of England's 2027 summer internships open in November 2026, according to the Bank's Summer Internships page (last updated 30 October 2026). The page does not yet give an exact opening date, a closing date or the pay. For summer 2027 it describes one 10-week Summer Internship for university students and a Black Heritage Sponsored Internship. In the last round, applications were already open when the page was updated on 3 November 2025 and closed at 12pm (midday) on Monday 1 December 2025; the Bank's page did not state the exact opening date. That round paid £25,250 a year pro rata in London or £22,940 in Leeds for penultimate-year students.

Below you will find the internships the Bank has run, who could apply, the pay, the business areas interns were placed in, how the last round's dates ran, every stage of the application, two worked examples of the situational judgement test (the first assessed stage) and what the Bank has said about graduate offers. You can register your interest now to get a reminder when applications open.

Which internships does the Bank of England offer?

The internship line-up has changed every year, so read each round on its own terms. For summer 2026 the Bank ran three internships, each 10 weeks. For summer 2027 its page lists a single Summer Internship for university students and the Black Heritage Sponsored Internship, which it describes as an internship in line with the Summer Internship plus funding towards living costs.

InternshipSummer 2025Summer 2026Summer 2027
Penultimate-year InternshipYes: eight weeks, London, £96.15 a dayYes: 10 weeks, London or Leeds, pro rata salaryThe page now describes one Summer Internship for university students

Black heritage internshipBlack Future Leaders Sponsorship Programme: described as for penultimate-year students (its entry list printed the postgraduate-year rules); eight-week paid internship plus at least £5,000 towards living costsBlack Heritage Sponsored Internship: 10 weeks, London, plus at least £5,000 towards living costsBlack Heritage Sponsored Internship: internship in line with the Summer Internship, plus at least £5,000 towards living costs for one year at university

Interns are placed in a team and, in the Bank's words, "work on a specific project closely with economists or analysts to collect and analyse data", with talks and networking events alongside. When you apply you are asked about your areas of interest; the Bank stresses this is an expression of interest only, not an application to a specific area.

Who can apply: eligibility

These are the rules the Bank printed for summer 2026. The 2027 page had not restated them on 6 November 2026, so check it when applications open.

InternshipYear of studyDegreeSchool grades
Penultimate-year (summer 2026)Penultimate year of an undergraduate degree; the internship is in the summer before your final yearExpecting a 2.1120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent)
Postgraduate-year (summer 2026)Final year of an undergraduate degree and planning a master's in economics or finance, or first year of a two-year master's in economics or financeExpecting or holding a 2.1 in your undergraduate degree120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent)
Black Heritage Sponsored (summer 2026)Penultimate year of an undergraduate degreeExpecting a 2.1Not listed; you must be of Black or mixed Black heritage with a household income under £50,778 a year

If you studied outside the UK, the Bank points you to the UCAS tariff calculator to convert your qualifications into UCAS points. For international students, the How to apply page says that without the right to work in the UK you must be studying at a British university and hold a valid Student route visa or other leave with suitable working rights.

Bank of England internship pay

The Bank advertises a salary for each internship. For summer 2026 it was a yearly figure paid pro rata, meaning you receive only the share for the weeks you work. The summer 2027 pay had not been published on 6 November 2026.

Bank of England internship pay, as an annual rate
Postgraduate-year, London, summer 2026£25,500
Penultimate-year and Black Heritage, London, summer 2026£25,250
Postgraduate-year, Leeds, summer 2026£22,950
Penultimate-year, Leeds, summer 2026£22,940

Annual pro rata salaries from the Bank's Internships page for the 2025/26 round (updated 3 Nov 2025).

InternshipSummer 2025 (8 weeks)Summer 2026 (10 weeks)Pay for the whole internship, before tax (our arithmetic)
Penultimate-year, London£96.15 a day£25,250 a year, pro rata2025: about £3,850 (40 working days). 2026: about £4,860 (10/52 of a year)
Penultimate-year, LeedsNot offered (London only)£22,940 a year, pro rata2026: about £4,410
Postgraduate-year, London£98.08 a day£25,500 a year, pro rata2025: about £3,920. 2026: about £4,900
Postgraduate-year, LeedsNot offered (London only)£22,950 a year, pro rata2026: about £4,410
Black heritage, London£96.15 a day£25,250 a year, pro rata2025: about £3,850 (40 working days). 2026: about £4,860. Both rounds: plus at least £5,000 towards living costs for one year at university

Our arithmetic is approximate: actual pay depends on your contract, working days, tax and National Insurance. As a check, £96.15 a day over 260 working days is about £25,000 a year (our arithmetic), close to the summer 2026 rate, so most of the rise in total pay came from the extra two weeks. For comparison, the Bank's Industrial Placement for 2027 pays £27,000 in London or £24,500 in Leeds a year, pro rata, over 13 months. The Bank's What we offer you page describes its staff benefits; it does not say which of them apply to a 10-week internship.

Business areas: where interns were placed

For summer 2026 the Bank listed the areas it could allocate interns to. Expect the 2027 list to change: several areas from 2025 were not repeated in 2026.

InternshipAreas listed for summer 2026Also listed for summer 2025 but not 2026
Penultimate-yearPayments; Markets; Financial Market Infrastructure; Financial Stability Strategy and Risk; Insurance Supervision; UK Deposit Takers SupervisionStrategic Change and Operations; Resolution; International; Central Bank Digital Currency; Prudential Policy
Postgraduate-yearMonetary Analysis; International; Financial Stability Strategy and Risk; Prudential PolicyFinancial Market Infrastructure
Black heritagePayments; Financial Stability Strategy and Risk; Insurance; Data Analytics Transformation; UK Deposit Takers SupervisionMonetary Analysis; Markets; Financial Market Infrastructure; Fintech

Because you cannot pick your area, a strong application shows genuine interest in the Bank's work as a whole and in one or two areas, without making your motivation depend on getting a particular team.

When do applications open and close?

The Bank's Internships page, and Wayback Machine copies of it, show how the last round ran. The dates below are the update dates printed on each version of the page.

Page updateWhat the Bank's Internships page said
23 Oct 2025Applications closed (summer 2025 programme described); register your interest for 2026
3 Nov 2025Applications open for all three internships, closing Monday 1 December 2025 at 12pm (midday); start end of June 2026
26 Jan 2026Applications closed; register for the 2027 opportunity
15 Apr 2026Applications closed; register your interest for 2027
30 Oct 2026Applications for 2027 internships will open in November 2026

So the last round was open by 3 November 2025 and closed at midday on 1 December 2025; the exact opening date was not stated. The 2027 closing date is not published yet. Our advice: have your CV, your grades and your examples ready now, and apply early in the window rather than on the final morning. After the video interview stage, the Bank says it notifies successful applicants two weeks after the application deadline, and they move on to the virtual assessment centre. Other 2027 programmes run on different timetables: the Industrial Placement closes at 12pm GMT on Monday 23 November 2026, and the graduate programmes open at 12pm GMT on Monday 7 December 2026.

The application stages

The How to apply page says the process is the same for apprentices, interns, industrial placements and graduates: a form, then three assessed stages.

StageWhat the Bank says
Application formRegister, check you are eligible, then tell the Bank about your background, education and work experience, upload your CV and answer free-text questions about you and your motivations. Your answers are considered throughout the process
1. Situational judgement test (online)Scenarios that reflect working life at the Bank; it gauges what you would do and how closely you align with its values. Pass to move on
2. Video interviewRecorded and reviewed later. A short time to think after each question, then a set time limit; the recording stops at the limit and you cannot re-record
3. Virtual assessment centreOne group exercise and one interview, with motivation, behaviour-based and analytical or technical questions
Pre-employment checksReferences, security clearance, identity, criminal record and credit checks, proof of qualifications, immigration clearance where relevant, and a medical questionnaire

The Bank is a member of the Disability Confident scheme: if you apply through it and meet the minimum requirements, you are fast-tracked to the video interview and your situational judgement test score is not considered. The Bank publishes three Bank Behaviours, its outline of how it does things and how people treat each other: act inclusively, drive growth and deliver outcomes. For the later stages, see our video interview guide, the assessment centre guide (with a free group-exercise brief) and interview questions and answers mapped to each Behaviour.

The online test: the situational judgement test

The Bank's guidance for candidates explains the format. Each scenario has four options. You say which one you would be most likely to do, and then which one you would be least likely to do. You must answer every question, but there is no time limit; the Bank suggests working at a relatively fast pace without taking too long on any one. It measures how closely you are aligned to the Bank's culture and ways of behaving, so it is not a knowledge test. Our advice is to learn the Bank Behaviours and practise choosing most and least likely responses until the format feels natural. Try a few free questions here:

Worked SJT examples for interns

Two practice scenarios set during a summer internship. Decide your own most and least likely before you read our reasoning.

Worked example 1: deliver outcomes (doing the work responsibly)

In week three of your internship, your supervisor asks you to summarise 40 pages of internal, unpublished comments from colleagues by Friday. Another intern suggests pasting the whole document into a free public AI chatbot to get a summary in seconds. You have not been told which tools, if any, may be used with internal material.

  1. A. Paste the document into the chatbot; it saves time and you will check the summary before sending it.
  2. B. Ask your supervisor whether any approved tool may be used with internal material and, in the meantime, start reading and summarising the most important sections yourself.
  3. C. Remove the names from the document first, then paste the rest into the chatbot.
  4. D. Do the summary yourself without asking, working late every evening to finish by Friday.

Our MOST likely: B. It checks the rule before any internal material leaves the Bank, keeps the work moving towards Friday, and puts the most important content first. This is our reasoning, not a published Bank rule: the Bank's AI guidance covers the application process, not its internal rules for work, so checking first is the cautious option.

Our LEAST likely: A. It sends the whole unpublished document to an outside service without permission. Checking the summary afterwards does not undo that, and a fast result is not worth a breach of trust.

The other two: C still sends unpublished content outside the Bank; removing names is not the same as permission. D is safe and committed, but it misses an easy question to your supervisor and risks a rushed result, so it sits in the middle.

An original practice scenario written for this page. These are our suggested ratings and explanations, reasoned from the Bank Behaviours, not official Bank answers.

Worked example 2: act inclusively (honesty and integrity)

At an external careers event, you mention that you are interning at the Bank of England. A recruiter from a large investment bank says your project on payments sounds fascinating and offers you two free tickets to a sold-out sports final next weekend. You are not sure what the Bank's rules on gifts and hospitality say for interns.

  1. A. Accept the tickets; you are only an intern and the recruiter is interested in you as a future graduate, not in the Bank.
  2. B. Thank the recruiter, say you need to check the Bank's rules first, and ask your supervisor or the Future Talent team before giving an answer.
  3. C. Politely decline straight away and leave it there.
  4. D. Accept the tickets but give them to a friend so that you do not go yourself.

Our MOST likely: B. It is friendly and honest, avoids guessing a rule you do not know, and asks the right people. Bank staff work with information that firms would value, so a generous offer from a firm deserves a check before anything is accepted.

Our LEAST likely: D. It accepts the gift and then tries to make it look as if you did not. That is the opposite of the "consistent honesty, integrity, and authenticity" the Bank puts at the centre of acting inclusively.

The other two: A accepts something valuable from a firm without checking. C is safe and avoids any risk, but it misses the chance to learn the rule and to keep a useful contact on good terms.

An original practice scenario written for this page. These are our suggested ratings and explanations, reasoned from the Bank Behaviours, not official Bank answers.

Do Bank of England interns get graduate offers?

The Bank has said that performance on an internship can lead somewhere, but it has not published a conversion rate. Its page for the summer 2025 programme (updated 23 October 2025) said, for the penultimate-year internship: "If your performance is outstanding, we may consider you for a place on our Graduate Development Programme or Postgraduate-year Internship." For the postgraduate-year internship it named the Graduate Development Programme only, and for the Black Future Leaders programme "a further internship or a place on our Graduate Development Programme". The summer 2026 and 2027 versions of the page do not repeat that sentence. The summer 2026 version says the internship could suit you if you are looking to "find out more about graduate opportunities at the Bank of England"; the 2027 version says "find out more about career opportunities at the Bank of England". We found no official figure for how many interns receive graduate offers, so treat any number you see elsewhere with care.

The graduate programmes use the same form and assessed stages described above. See our Bank of England graduate scheme guide for graduate salaries and streams.

Security vetting and start dates

All Bank staff need National Security Vetting, interns included. The Bank says it usually takes three to four weeks after an offer but can take much longer, and that you should not hand in your notice to an employer before clearance is granted. If you have lived outside the UK in the last five years, give full details: for some countries the Bank cannot complete the checks, and then it cannot employ you.

Internship, placement, apprenticeship or graduate scheme?

Which Bank of England programme fits you

  • At university with a summer free: the Summer Internship (or the Black Heritage Sponsored Internship, if eligible).
  • At university with a placement year built into your course: the 13-month Industrial Placement (2027 applications close 23 November 2026).
  • Finishing A levels and want to earn while you get a degree: see our Bank of England degree apprenticeship guide.
  • Finishing a degree: the graduate programmes. See our graduate scheme guide.
  • School leavers and PhD students have separate routes: the Bank lists Apprenticeships and PhDs alongside its university programmes on its Future Talent page.
  • The Bank accepts only your first application across all its Future Talent programmes, so choose the one that fits your stage before you start the form.

Programme descriptions from the Bank's Future Talent, Summer Internships, Industrial Placements and How to apply pages (October 2026).

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for the closing date. The last round was already open on 3 November and closed at midday on 1 December.
  • Assuming last year's line-up will return. Summer 2025 had eight-week, London-only internships; summer 2026 had three 10-week internships in London or Leeds; summer 2027 lists one Summer Internship plus the Black Heritage Sponsored Internship.
  • Writing your motivation around one team. You give areas of interest, but the Bank allocates you.
  • Applying for the internship and the Industrial Placement. Only your first application counts.
  • Treating the online test as a formality. It is normally the first assessed stage and tests fit with the Bank's culture and Behaviours.
  • Pasting AI-written answers into the form. The Bank says to use your own words and not to use AI tools during the video interview, live interview or group exercise.

Practise the situational judgement test before applications open

The free questions above are the start of our Bank of England Situational Judgement Test Practice: ten scenario sets mapped to the three published Bank Behaviours, in the most and least likely format the Bank describes, every option explained, and one practice mock.
